tried but failed to connect external HDisk to the imac7 via esata

Hi,

I have taken out the optical drive of my imac 7 and use its sata port on the motherboard to connect with the sata-esata cable. And then I connected the external hard disk to the esata.

But neither the OS nor the Disk Utility saw the external harddisk.

Have anyone here successfully done this before? Have I missed something?
