View Full Version : More Claims of Taller Next-Generation iPhone Surface Alongside Video

Nowhereelse.fr noticed (http://www.nowhereelse.fr/ecran-iphone-4g-piece-detachee-30959/) (Google translation (http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://www.nowhereelse.fr/ecran-iphone-4g-piece-detachee-30959/)) that a mobile phone repair shop has posted a new YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKrLnHQ8d3U) showing what is claimed to be the LCD and digitizer for the next-generation iPhone, revealing a slightly taller form factor than that of the existing iPhone.

The part looks similar, but not identical, to photos of the same part posted in early February (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/02/08/claimed-fourth-generation-iphone-parts-surface-revealing-taller-form-factor/). The earlier photos showed a reflective surface just above the earpiece slot, while the new video shows a lack of such a physical feature. Conversely, the new video shows a small hole to the left of the earpiece slot that is presumed to be for a forward-facing camera. That hole was absent in the earlier set of photos.

As we've noted before, it is not unusual for Asian suppliers to offer parts for claimed future-generation iPhone and iPod products. While some appear to have been true leaks, many of the claims have turned out to be incorrect (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/07/30/leaked-iphone-bezel-actually-for-creative-zii-egg/).

My 3Gs iPhone has the same hole to the left of the earpiece... It's for the proximity sensor.

Photoshopped. You can tell by the obvious shaky video and its resolution, along with the accompanying pixelation around such parts.

It had to be said.

In all seriousness, I think it could happen, but this would break the trend of cases and most accessories that have been able to unintentionally cover 2 generations of the iPhone. Oh well. It's not like I own them.

My 3Gs iPhone has the same hole to the left of the earpiece... It's for the proximity sensor.

If what he has is also the glass front of the device, none of the iPhones have that actual hole penetrating all the way through, including the glass. However, if the glass is not there, then you are definitely correct. I can't quite tell though.

this video could have easily been 3:30 shorter.

the iPhone 3G (3GS) was slightly wider than the original iPhone, so now the 4th gen iPhone will be slightly taller. exciting. My guess is that hole would be for a message indicator (like the blackberry phones), their have been too many rumor let downs of front facing cameras.

First off, that song makes me want to bash my head against a wall. And their camera person needs to learn about focus, exposure and white balance.

Otherwise, I wonder if they can find out the resolution of the display they have in-hand. I don't think a slightly taller phone matters all that much, I think the resolution is a much more important question to answer. Personally, if its not a significant jump, I'm going for that Sprint HTC EVO 4G with WiMax and just picking up a next-gen iPod Touch. iPhone's hardware is getting very behind.

don't know if it's real or not, but it would be nice if apple would make at least some attempt to catch up to the current phone manufacturers in terms of hardware (especially a high res screen).

Seems like this is a good idea, but if fact I'd like to see the screen a little wider, even a few mm to get closer to the physical edge of the bezel.

With all the iPad stuff I am craving info on the next iPhone...it is, after all, just a few months away from the 2-year contract expiration for us early 3G adopters.

Forward camera would be nice. I'm not bothered by a slightly taller factor, slips into my pocket fine.

If this is an actual part produced by Apple, I could see them putting these things out there to flush out leaks, or more importantly testing potential manufacturers.

A high res screen? Like on the Nexus One?

I hope not! (http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2010/03/secrets-of-the-nexus-ones-screen-science-color-and-hacks.ars)

Seems like the reflection of the display is a lot darker to me.. OLED? The 3G screen definitely has a greyish colour that isn't there on the 4G.

There are many iPhone clones out there.

Probability of an iPhone clone part showing up unauthorized > Probability of a real future iPhone part

But if its real, Id gladly accept a little extra height for a webcam.

I swapped out my early 3G iphone last summer. Anyhow, the front facing camera makes smore sense in th eipad than in the phone though I would not be mad at an implenmantation in either area.

I till think that a folding OLED screen could give one a small form factor with a large screen which is what I would guess we are all after. Technology is quite there yet though.

The Wall Street Journal has this breaking news on their web page right now:

Apple is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer and also appears to be working on another model for U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless.

What a total waste of Internet bandwidth, not to mention the time of all MacRumors readers.

The part shown is definitely one for a fake iPhone, and not an Apple iPhone.

I cannot believe people keep on falling for this!

I really hope that the next iPhone is going to be a little more revolutionary than that. They have a lot of ground to make up after the unveiling of the HTC EVO 4G.

Fakes really annoy me...

The time and effort gone into making the screen must have been painstaking, no?!

Look around 2:40-50, the button hole is obviously bigger, why on earth would apple change that? surely the iPad has the same as the current iPhone so why change it on the new screen?

Silly boys...

Agreed. I love my Apple gear tons but the iPhone is feeling really stale right now. If I wasn't so entrenched in all the apps I've come to use, I would have already jumped ship. I really hope Apple is paying attention.

I wouldn't mind if the iPhone got SMALLER and not TALLER. I can understand that the phone can't be smaller than the screen, but it can be smaller than it is now. I think that ideally it should be one big screen, with not much bezel. I'm sure it's possible to do if they want to. The home button is not an issue since they can make it much smaller or move it to the edge or something. I just think the iPhone is a big phone and not very practical because of that. It could also get a bit thinner, like the iPod Touch.

If that's the new front screen then I'm heading to the HTC 4G when it's out.

I was hoping they'd get rid of the black borders around the top and bottom of the screen, look awful now.

Why not do something completly new, like design holes in the screen for the earpiece and home button? that would be awsome and look like new tech.

The borders just make the phone look dated, there is no need for them.

This is not going to be a new phone, it's going to be the 3GS with some things that HTC were using in 2009

For a knock off iPhone.

Slightly taller, but screen seems the same size??

Packaging looks like something sold on a back street in China.

This is why they have hand models...at least find someone with decent fingernails.

I agree - I would be happier with a smaller form factor as well. I've always been partial to flip phones for that very reason.

Ditto! Hole does not equal camera. Even if there was another hole on the other side it could be just another sensor of some kind.

These guys have a history of passing off clones and fakes as being real. Rather than go into any detail, their videos are always characteristically vague.

As has been said, the probability of this being a poorly sized clone is orders of magnitude higher than the probability of this being a 4th gen iPhone screen.

One also has to ask, if this were real (which it isn't), how has a repair company got hold of such an integral part 2-3 months before release is even announced. It's possible apple haven't even begun manufacturing these parts en mass yet.

I just spoke to an old college buddy who now works for apple. He told me that he is on the team that is developing the next generation iphone. The one that is coming after the iphone hd. He said that its name is going to be the iphone 3d and you won't need glasses to view the screen. Supposedly you will be able to switch between 2d and 3d modes. He also said that it will feature an internal hdtv antennae with dvr capabilities sweeeett. Anyway, just thought that some of the ppl in here might be interested in hearing that.
