I hear you. My new iMac 1.6 crashed contantly. I took it to the local Apple Store and the tech pronounced it DOA!!!!!
Unfortunatly, I can't just exchange mine for a new one at the Apple Store because of the BT and Ram upgrades.
So, Apple put in a new order for a duplicate system, and mine is back in the box waiting for FedEx pick it up and ship it back.
Another month of waiting for me :(

well... finally... I was able to make everything work...!!
for the fan: well i think my system wa soverheating or i dunno... after putting the 512mb of ram everything works fine! the fan almost never has to start!
and for the cd thing.... while I was putting the ram in.... I forced the superdrive up a little... so now it's working 90% of the time!

Made the decision last night to get the new iMac, called the Apple Store woodfield today at about 3, they said they had a few 20 inchers in stock, I asked them to hold one for me, went to the bank, took out 2000 in cash (all new 50's, in serial number order), went to the apple store, and walked out 20 minutes later with the 20 inch and a printer. I'm tranfering photos right now over the network from my 1.25 GHZ 15 inch powerbook, so its not running the quickest in the world, but then again, it does only have 256 ram. i gotta pick up a 512 stick. we'll see how this goes. first impression-beautiful!

I've read that you can change the system speed .. how / where do you change this? I can't find any pre-installed utilities to do this.

Well, after noticing one dead pixel on my screen yesterday, I did a total lookover of my display with a black background and guess what...I found five/six stuck pixels as well (2 red, 3 green, 1 blue) some are faint and some disappear when rubbed. Here's how I found them...
1) Open DVD player (w/o movie in drive)
2) Set player to "Enter full Screen" mode under "video" pulldown menu
3) Run your eyes closely around the "black" display
You only really see them against a black background but they are there. You can't miss them against black...they look like colored stars in the sky.
I have a feeling that this is actually very common, but most people don't ever examine their displays thoroughly.
So, can anybody else with a new iMac try this using the DVD player and tell me if you have red/green/blue stuck pixels as well. If it appears from the responses that it is common for you to have a few of these, I can live with it (especially if I'm risking getting a worse off screen or even fan) plus the discussion may lessen the anxiety among those waiting if they know its common and in fact an "accepted" production-wide occurance. With that said if very few of you report stuck pixels...I'm gonna reluctantly see about a return (especially when I've got a dead pixel as well). I should note that none of these "display anomalies" are very noticible, perhaps we're lucky to even have such technology in the first place. Thanks for your input :)

Darkender:
I report this to you because you asked, not to brag: I have none, zero. Did as you suggested w/DVD player. Pure black screen.
I've previously reported that fan "noise" on mine relates directly to room temperature. As I write, it is 77 F (25), and a single fan is on, whisper quiet. Do not have a decibel meter, but my face is 18 inches from screen, and the room's overhead fan is louder, as is the refrigerator, which I can hear in the kitchen. I can just hear the...I'm assuming G5...fan, and only because I'm trying to notice it.
All hardware on mine has worked perfectly.
I thought something was wrong w/my AE, with sudden drop-outs, until I noticed they co-incided w/using a 3.2 MHz phone. Replaced the phone w/5.8 MHz model. I also thought the BT had a problem when the mouse and keyboard either disconnected or did not respond correctly in Excel. A tech correctly diagnosed that the Option key had been hit rapidly at least 5 times. This turned off the numeric keypad, and was corrected by going to Universal Access and turning it back on.
I waited so long for the machine (since May) that I do not know what I would do in your shoes.

Mine arrived last Friday and on Saturday I also had problems with an audio CD not ejecting. Called Apple and after several tests, including removing the back cover and resetting something (?) which didn't work, they pronounced it DOA and agreed to exchange the computer. Pretty disappointing, but overall impressed with Apple's service thus far. I eventually got the CD to eject through repeated attempts, but I definitely will send this one back!
Love the iMac though! First-time Mac owner.

I also have the 20 and have one stuck pixel (blue) almost in the center. But it's impossible to see with anything except a black screen so I never notice it. Rubbing it didn't do anything. I'm not worried about it and am very happy with the display.

Since I cant see any dead pixels just by using the computer, I'm not going to look. I dont want to disappoint myself.
I'm a first-time Mac user and I must say it's quite a nice machine. I think I may be the first to say, that I was expecting the 20" screen to be bigger, especially since I've been using a 12.1" laptop for the past 5 years! I guess it's b/c everyone on this thread talked about how HUGE it was and yada yada yada. I'm not disappointed AT ALL though!
It's going to take some getting used to... learning all the new shortcuts, dealing with a 1-button mouse, etc.

First off, loving the New G5 20" 1.8!!
Fast as can be, flawless changeover from our older G3, and PB G4 Aluminum!
We didnt however get a Final Cut Express CD with it, I was bummed!
The computer was wonderful.
FYI for all you guys and gals waiting for yours. After it hits the states it should be to you within 2-3 days TOPS. Ours went from Shanghai -> Alaska -> Indiana in 1.5 days, and from Indiana to California to us in LESS than 24 hours! So hang in there..
Please help me diagnose this problem however... We did notice a DVD player issue, please see this thread, as I do not want to spam this forum with it.:

Thanks to my neighbor for signing for the package while I was out, my first-ever Mac is up and running. Zero hardware defects, zero dead pixels!
A couple of newbie questions though...
1> When I try to view video feeds at http://www.king5.com or http://www.komotv.com, those sites seem to think I'm running on a 56K dial-up connection. I've checked QuickTime, Windows Media Player and Real configurations - everything is set for cable connection speed.
2> Before I sold my XP computer, I backed up everything as many ways as I could. I used Entourage to act as a middleman to get my e-mails into Mail but can't find a way to import my Outlook (from Office XP) Calendar into either Entourage or iCal. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Mine says the same - it means that it's with TNT at last! Well, that means I should get it at some point next week, which is somewhat disappointing, as I'm up at university, so I'll have to wait for my parents to find a convenient time to deliver it to me. I ordered on the 31st of August, so it's taken quite a while, but it could be worse.

i'll try the dead pixel thing tonight. I've not noticed anything yet, but then again I'm still drooling over all the desktop space.
I must be really lucky or something with wireless. I have a Panasonic multi-handset 2.4GHz system and I never seem to have wireless problems. Though I do have goofy 'whole network vanishes' but it's never when the phones are on and I've even unplugged the phone from the wall and shut it off to make sure there wasn't some type of conflict.
Rebooting the AEBS seems to fix those types of 'network goes away' things

All I can say is WOW!!! It's beautiful and the screen is brilliant! So much brighter, sharper, clearer then my 19" Sony CRT. I'm just installing all the Apps back onto it. LOVE IT!!!!!

Smart idea! You and I both had ordered a stock 20" through the Apple Canada online store as Education customers on Aug. 31. We both got the delayed one more month notice at the end of September. Unfortunately, I'm still sitting here with no iMac and a OOB ship date of November 1 while you have a computer. Did you still get the education discount through CDW or did you pay the full price?

For the first time I actually saw a 17" in the flesh at John Lewis over the weekend. My lady, in tow and often one whom affiliates with my Mac-phile tendencies when I approach the computer department, was amazed as much as I at the beautiful piece of equipment in front of us. She loves the sunflower-inspired G4, but could immediately get used to the G5 version ... so long as it was the 20incher.
With half-the battle won, I vowed that when the time was right to have my credit card take a beating and go for the 20; the Time being when the later of either Tiger is released or the second G5 upgrade comes out with better graphics and 512 ram.

Price?
Now here is were it gets interesting.
The British Government have launched a little known scheme wereby you can purchase a computer through your employer, it's known as the HCI or Home Computer Initiative. Your company buy the machine, claim back the VAT and then sell or lease it back to you over a period of time and, depending on the rate of tax that you pay, you could save 50% of the purchase price of a new computer. It's all to do with Blair's vision of us all becoming computer whizzes in this sceptered isle. By the time i've specced up my ig5, it comes to about £ 2200, buying that for £1100 is very good indeed.

Big and beautiful is the best way to describe it. I'm still completely lost but have figured out at least enough to turn it on, insert the aol cd and install aol so I could get online, and start the software updates running in the background. Wow!
The only cons I have so far is the mouse is kind of picky, couldn't use my old mouse pad, had to dig out a really old one that was completely black and more rubbery. The keyboard cable is really short and doesn't allow me to put the keyboard on the pullout keboard rack and run the cable out behind and up to the computer. I suppose I can get a short extension cable somewhere but It would have been nice if the cable had been about a foot longer. I just reached over and hooked up our new iPod that has been just sitting on the desk awaiting the arrival of the new Imac, it just hooked up and is doing...something :) I still have to figure out how to hook up the printer, the new digital camera and the video camera. I think I have my work cut out for me today, but I'm not complaining. :)
Well gotta go pla...work :D

well just got home from work and i had an email waiting for me from Apple, not the one i wanted " Because of such a high demand ....." mine has been delayed till OOB 15th Oct. :(
Well at least it is only four days instead of 30 or so. I've seen several posts here that show 30 day push outs instead of four...
Not that it helps any :(

Oh my god I can't believe it!!! My iMac was out for delivery this morning and showing on the TNT website - I've just refreshed the page and it has been taken back to the depot as the delivery address is wrong/incomplete or missing!!!!! What the hell is that all about ?
Ok so I called TNT and they didnt even have my house number or first line of my address - they said that is what Apple gave them! I was shocked that as the driver was in my area trying to deliver a parcel that they didnt think to give me a call to find out the address - instead they took it back to the depot. They did have my phone number!
So now I have to wait untill tomorrow and my partner may not even be able to be here when they deliver and I'm at work all day!

What kind of a difference do you think 2gb makes compared with 1gb in the imac?
and WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED in your garage??? mob hit?
No, I don't think 2GB makes that big of a difference compared to 1GB, but I had purchased a single 1GB DIMM and when I heard this business about dual-channel and 128-bit memory bus I decided I wanted to go for it. I'm not saying 2GB is the reason why, but boy does this thing fly.

Mine arrived about a week ago. The TNT driver did phone me, but like yours, he did not have my full address. Bizarre or what? They send something out to be delivered sans address.
When it finally turned up, the box was bashed up a bit and pretty dirty, but the computer inside is brilliant. One of the Crucial DIMMs I installed proved to be dodgy however -- I had to run the Apple Hardware check CD to unearth that (sounds like a hairdryer as the fans are on full blast while the CD is running). The symptom was applications quitting unannounced. The chips were correctly seated etc, but it's one to look out for. Apple's on-line help (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/assistant/) proved excellent BTW.

So I placed an order last week for a 20" iMac G5 and a few other goodies, AirPort, Applecare, .Mac, etc. Well they sent the small stuff and said it was delivered at 1:13PM today. Only problem is it wasn't delivered here. And my my house is the only house on the street. I wonder if I need to call Apple now or wait for FedEX to try to find my stuff...

I had exactly the same problem with my address not being on the box. Not sure if this was just a problem with that batch or all UK orders. Luckily I was refreshing the TNT tracking page every 10 mins so as soon as I saw that message I rang them straight away to sort it. Even so, it stopped my iMac going out to be delivered on Friday morning and ended up sitting in the TNT warehouse all weekend. It finally arrived at my house about 20 mins ago :D.

I am in Vancouver and I ordered mine in from a reseller as well they got their first shipment last week which included 5 BTO and 5 standard configurations. They are expecting more this week. They have told me mine should be in their next shipment
I predict you should be getting a call in the next day or so. Set mine up on Friday and transferred about 12 Gigs of movie projects from my Father-In-Law's DP G4. Used ethernet cable and it only took about 10 minutes. The guy at the Apple store wanted to sell me a Firewire patch cable for $30 to save me a few minutes!! I guess that's what they do, sell things... Anyway, so far, so very impressed. Beautiful HUGE screen, no dead pixels. I've already put it through its paces using iMovie and iDVD and nary a hiccup. Very quick and smooth. Only after a hefty work out with some iMovie renders did the fans become noticeable.
Fabulous machine. I'm very pleased. Still trying to get used to all that extra real estate!!

Things could be much worse....
Let's hope the following situation doesn't happen to you:
> Sep 7 - Order Placed... Expected ship on or before Oct 5
> Oct 11 - TNT Express calls me "Sir, we may be a few days late with your package. It has been accidentally left out in the rain at our depot. We need to dry it off and assess the damage"
> Oct 12 - TNT shows up at my office with a destroyed box. It is clear that the bottom 35 centimeters of the box have been completely submerged in water. They recommend that I accept and call Apple. When I take the computer out of the remains of the box, water literally drips out of the speakers on the bottom.
I immediately phone Apple... Their response "We're very sorry. A replacement will be sent with highest priority. It should ship within the NEXT 4 WEEKS! "
> New expected ship date: November 9th. UNACCEPTABLE!
Two comments:
A.) TNT Express is pathetic. How can you "accidentally leave a package in the rain". It's not as if it isn't evident on the box that the contents are a computer. FedEx provides such a better service. I wish Apple would select a new logistics provider here in Europe.
B.) Apple customer service is equally pathetic. They have done ZERO to accommodate this situation. I am currently a windows user and this would be my first Apple. Instead of correcting the problem they have placed me at the back of the queue. I will cancel my order today out of principle.

That's one of the worst shipping stories I've ever heard. You're right, Apple should drop TNT if this is the kind of service it provides.
However, I don't believe Apple has placed you at the back of the queue. It has become clear that Apple is producing batches of iMacs with similar configurations, and the company is simply informing you of the latest date when a batch with your configuration is expected to be produced. Although Apple won't reschedule the production of thousands of iMacs to make another one for you, I'm sure that if you ask for a manager and try to work constructively with that manager, you can get expedited shipping free of charge, a discount for your inconvenience, and a free upgrade or other Apple goodies to keep your business.
Whatever you do, don't compromise your computing experience because of a stupid mistake made by a shipping company - you're really mostly punishing yourself!

so tell me how it is...god i need a good review..It's amazing... a real pleasure to use (I have the 20").
I'm coming from Windows and am still getting used to OS X (and the keyboard layout). There are a few things I miss, but so far I'm impressed with everything.
The G5 iMac hardware is superb: simple design, attractive look, easy to setup. Some have complained about the disproportionately large border below the LCD, but it doesn't bother me.
Most of the time it runs completely silent, but once in a while I can hear a fan (but it's still quiet). Using the optical produces the only really noticeable sound (and it's not any louder than your typical optical drive).
I got the BT keyboard/mouse combo; it works well, though I leave my iMac on all the time and I initially planned to turn off the mouse and keyboard while I'm out (to save on batteries). But OS X takes several minutes to locate the mouse so I just leave the mouse/keyboard on all the time (dunno what that'll do to battery battery life). Note that when booting fresh or coming out of standby, OS X finds the mouse instantly... it only takes a while if you turn the mouse off and on while OS X is running.
It did not come with a wired keyboard or mouse.
Performance is quite good (single 512 MB RAM chip). It feels about the same as a 2+ GHz Windows box. Except that I've yet to experience the annoying random hard drive thrashing that happens occasionally under with Windows... and I dont see system slow-downs when copying files (Win32 multitasking blows).
I installed a second 512 MB chip from Crucial, but I get kernel panics with it, so Crucial's sending a replacement. Things get a bit chunky when managing a lot of hi-res photos with iPhoto, so I'm looking forward to running with 1GB. Accessing the innards to install the memory was easy.

I expressed my disappointment and asked him to cancel the order altogether. He asked if there was anything he could do to make up for the situation. Same here ... or similar ... if I have iTunes playing songs and a system sound chimes in it sounds cut off and weird. Also adjusting volume has that weird cut off sound too. Tried to look for some sort of fix / mention on Apple's support site and via Google but could not find any.... :(
BUT other then that my 20"-er is a beautiful machine.... i often get up from my desk just to walk around and admire it from all sides :) very happy with the performance over my G4-400 PowerMac too. I do a lot of design (print and web) and it's just a pleasure to do work on it. I don't know about gameplay (I don't play games) & video editing but for design work like print and web it's great!

Well, that sucks. I'm not sure I can top that, but consider this: I'm a Melbourne (Australia) resident. I ordered my iMac (stock 20") early in September (within no more than three days, probably two, of the announcement). I'm still waiting, with absolutely no news -- not a peep -- from Apple Australia to the reseller I ordered through.
I rang the Apple store (they have an online/phone ordering service that bypasses the retailers); they indicated that their customers are looking at the end of October for delivery. I spoke with Computers Now (another reseller, not the one I ordered through); they indicated that every store they've spoken with has the same story as the Apple store gave me. My reseller hasn't contact me; my guess is that he's not going to until he knows for certain when it's going to arrive.
I begin to understand, more and more, what my reseller said to me back when I bought my 1.25 GHz 15" PowerBook (shortly after it was available in Australia): he's in business in spite of, not because of, Apple Australia.
My summation of Apple: great products; but their business execution stinks to high heaven. I want that iMac for several reasons; arguably the biggest one is that I ended up in a hole (emotionally speaking) after working at a job that was ... uh ... less than brilliant; it's taken me three years to reach the point where I feel like doing a complex -- but educational -- programming task for the hell of it. Now events are conspiring to make it impossible to do the task I have in mind (kernel programming simply can't be done with just one computer, unless you're superhumanly patient.) Argh!
Oh, well, I guess I've waited three years to get to this point; I can wait another month or two...

Congratulations dmseads from a fellow Bostonian. Welcome to MacRumors. I hope that your day will pass by quickly. Do you attend the Boston Mac Group?
Thanks wdlove. I love this iMac. Went and picked it up last night at the FedEx place. I know it's only been one night, but to all the switchers still out there waiting...it's MORE than worth it. This thing's a beauty. And I'm really impressed with OSX already.

Latest update: Supervisor I spoke with yesterday called Shanghai this morning and informed me that November 3 is the earliest possible ship date. Sigh. :(
I expressed my disappointment and asked him to cancel the order altogether. He asked if there was anything he could do to make up for the situation. I asked him to review the size of my order and requested a discount. Although he didn't want to commit to a number on the phone, he finally agreed to offer a healthy rebate. With the discount and a commitment to November 3 ship date I accepted.
Guess I can spend another month checking my order status on the web every 5 minutes.
hey swissqueso, What config did you order?
I am still waiting for my 20" 256mb,160GB,AE, BT mouse and keyboard. Order on 31 Aug oob was 12 Oct. Got a delay email from Apple. Now is oob 18 Oct.
Hope I will get it this time with no delay. Tell me you didnt order the same config. I dont want to wait till 3 Nov :)

Hello everybody!
I decided to join in too. I ordered an iMac 17" BT 512, on Sep 6th, and it shipped today.
here is the history form apecode.com:
17 okt 04 32 05 Flight Booked Apple Shanghai
14 okt 04 00 05 Data received from supplier Apple Shanghai
14 okt 04 30 60 departed from product source Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
14 okt 04 05 00 boxes scanned Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
14 okt 04 30 64 Departed from source Apple Shanghai
Two questions:
1) are newer items below or above older items?
2) can you please translate the stuff ive written? what does 17 okt flight booked mean? is it coming on the 17th?
Thanks.

Well,. just got yet another "Delayed E-Mail" i now have a date of 22 Oct, not very happy. so i have just emailed the Apple Store UK, saying just that. also i asked the question "Why are people with same configuration as myself, who ordered after me seem to be getting thiers ?"
I know i am not the only person still waiting, and i know there are people who have beening waiting longer, but why do apple give you a date knowing that they can not stick to it ?.
how can a company the size of apple have logistic problems ?

I'm not disappointed, I think it's a great machine. It's just irritating that there is something wrong with it from the get-go, and I;m gonna have to spend time on the phone with Apple getting 'em to fix it!

I ordered my iMac G5 on October 4th. 20" / 512 RAM / 250Gig / BT installed but wired keyboard / AirPort card. Order is stil listed as "Open" with estimated ship date of 11/03/04, the same it has been for the last 10 days. It looks like many (but not all) folks here have had the iMac shipped in two weeks or less, so my hope is that my ship date is sometime next week instead of two weeks after that.

Uh, JRichardson, maybe you shouldn't hold your breath too long.
My BTO:
Ordered 8/31/04:
Shipped 9/24/04:
Received 9/29/04.
Mine shipped air mail from Shaing Hai. Apple widely publicized that an unspecified number of "early orders" would be shipped via air. This was a strategy to create buzz, reward early orderers and no doubt get models in their stores. The company noted that it was taking a "profit hit" for doing so.
At some point, the machine will begin shipping via "slow boat from China," literally.
Not sure if this point has been reached yet. Be assured, the wait will be worth it. This machine is -- by far -- the best computer I've ever used or owned.

Because it is always crazy and crowded. The upgrade isle where you have to go to get the ram is a joke. you stand not in a line, but just around some sales guy while he is helping someone else and just wait (10-15min) for someone to help you while the area crawls with people trying to do the same. Then you pray you don't need to return anything because the return line looks horrific at all times. BUT they are the only place around here (I live in Huntington Beach but the Frys Im talking about is in Fountain Valley) that I can walk in and leave with a gig of mathed brand name ram without paying through the nose for it.

Reading your story made me realize how lucky I was to get my BTO 20" iMac so quickly - I actually received it several days before the estimated ship date. I think this shows how little respect Apple has for its resellers - customers at Apple stores appear to be a much higher priority for Apple. The question is, how long will it be until the resellers (and their customers) tell Apple where to go...
For now, I wouldn't order any new Apple products anywhere but at the Apple Store, where I've had very good service and prompt shipping with all the items I've recently purchased (iPod, iMac G5, Airport Express).
Don't give up, though, you'll be glad when you finally get it!

I wouldn't worry about the quake that much. The epicenter was well off shore near Taiwan. It was a 6.7 on the richter scale which is more of a moderate quake.

Sorry, but if anything Education channel shipments are lower priority than regular sales. I ordered a stock 20" iMac through the Apple Canada On-line store on August 31st. After a delay email from Apple, my OOB ship date slipped from September 30 to November 1st. The two places in Calgary (Westworld and the UofC Microstore) that offer Ed discounts are still saying there is a 4+ week wait and that they've delivered no 20" systems to Ed customers yet.
Another poster cancelled his Ed order and paid full price to get the a machine in about 2 weeks through CDW online. So if you're in a rush, I strongly don't recommend you use the Education channel. My SO doesn't actually need the computer for her university program until February so I'm in no rush. I figure if I see it before Christmas, I'll be happy.

I ordered a 20 inch at my local reseller (in Adelaide Australia) on September the Ist. I was the second person to order an ImacG5 at this store and they have no information from Apple when their shipment of 30 Imacs is coming. Hopefully in the second half of October. With the build up of shipping delays I think it would be a while before Apple would be considering a Rev B. Hang in there mate Im sure it will be worth waiting for.

I am not sure that I buy the argument that Apple is intentionally witholding educational orders and shipping out full price purchases first. I ordered on Oct. 4th and I am getting the same OOB November 2nd, 2004 ship date that everyone else seems to be getting.
If others who ordered around the same time start to receive theirs and I don't receive mine then I guess I will buy off on that, but that would be very bad business on the side of Apple and I don't think they would want that kind of mark on their reputation. If they were going to be that way then why offer the education discount at all?
They did ship my iSight and printer right away. I had them in my possession about 2-3 days after I ordered.
Eric
P.S. I am in the US and ordered direct from the Apple Store. I don't know if that will make a difference or not. At least I can login to the web site every five minutes, like everyone else, and see that the status hasn't changed.

The CompUSA in my town has been selling their display units as well, which is a real shame because it means that potential customers can't even see the machines. I had a tough time choosing between the 17" and the 20" because I couldn't see the difference. I decided to splurge and go for the 20" (bought through the online AppleStore because it was BTO); hopefully it will be worth the extra $400.

You not only get more screen real estate with the 20", but you also get a much higher quality screen with better brightness and an improved viewing angle. The larger HD on the 20" model doesn't hurt, either.

Ordered BTO 20" iMac 1st Sept. After 6 weeks it finally arrived yesterday. What a great machine!!! No dead pixels, bright, sharp display. I maxed it out...2GB RAM, BT, APE, 250GB drive and wireless keyboard and mouse. The mouse sucks though...not only because it is one button without scroll wheel but the button is too sensitive even at firmest setting and there is a slight delay between mouse move and cursor move...but the BT keyboard is great. It is actually second BT keyboard from Apple and it is very good. Very responsive and the batteries last forever...the first Apple BT keyboard I bought in April, I have never turned it off and the batteries are still in pretty good shape.
I have not much time to get into heavy work with it yet but even at "Automatic" Energy Savings it blows the doors off my 1GHz PowerMac with 1GB RAM. I work alot in Illustrator and Photoshop with large documents (A2 and larger at print resolution - 120dpcm) and there is just no comparison...the iMac is so much more responsive...and when opening/rendering an Illustrator documnet in Photoshop it is amazing...insted of waiting 1-3 minutes the Illustrator doc is rasterized in seconds!!! I love it!!! Too all those still waiting it is worth the wait...

I purchased mine on 8/31 on actually received it before the OOB date. So I don't know if I buy the Ed. orders get low priority either.
Honestly, I couldn't tell you how Apple is shipping, for all I know it could be alphabetical by mother's maiden name. I have seen almost identical orders going to the same country (US) get shipped IMO screwy, an order placed after one (several days that is) go out before an earlier place order. These were same order types meaning both ED orders.
I did read the story about the guy who cancelled his ed order and go through CDW, or maybe it was the other way around, cancelled CDW order and went full price no BTO through Apple Store Online. Can't remember now but yes it did change his ship time.
Just like those that are receiving the 'We're sorry, our bad.' letters now that are seeing similar orders placed after them go out while their order sits.
Enough rambling, no one really knows. I doubt Apple could even answer this one.

Now I just gotta get home to set it up....it's gonna be a l-o-n-g afternoon...
I still remember when my first Mac arrived -- a Performa 6100 (10 1/2 years ago!) -- my boss, also my friend, sent me home early so I could set up my new and first computer! :)

If anyone ordered a 20 inch 1.8 ghz imac with 1 gig (2 dimms) of ram, 250 gigs of hard drive space, no bluetooth but with an airport extreme card pre-installed after 9/20 and you've had it shipped, i'd advise you to contain your excitement.
that is all.
:(
Why do you say that? Did you hear something? I ordered a very similar spec machine - with 512Mb RAM - on Sep 22 and my OOB is still 21/10. Don't try and change my optimistic outlook and belief that Apple are working hard to cheer me up.

Unable to get information about when to expect my IMAC G5 here in the U.S. - my sales agent simply says they have no information as to when they will be shipping, which I simply cannot believe.
Anyone here know when these babies might be landing in the US?
Wouldn't you think Apple would have figured out how to do this by now? Man, it's frustrating

Ordered from the education store (UK) 6th October. Shipped 17/10. 17", BT mouse & keyboard, 160GB Hard drive. Otherwise standard.
Nothing else appears on the tracking page yet, though.

I'm so excited! :D
I ordered mine on 10/4. I just shipped last night from Shanghai and today it landed in Anchorage. The scheduled arrival date is 10/20. I've already got my new speakers, external backup drive, and Airport base station so I'm ready to get rid of this awful old Win 98 pc forever!!!
Welcome to the Mac side and MacRumors. Your excitement definitely shows. What type if external drive and speakers did you purchase? How long have you been a PC user?

Yeah. Love everything about this machine...except the one-button BT mouse.
Broke down today and ordered a RadTech 3-button.
I do too much surfing...I want to avoid Repetitive Motion Injuries.
Sorry, Apple, but this is one thing PCs have on you. The only thing, BTW.
KJ! Did you get my email? How's your project going?
I did get the email, thanks again! Right now we have just briefly discussed it, we are in the process of doing an energy audit on a building right now (a hotel) afterwards we get started on our presentation.
I've been looking at the RadTecg mouse as well, but I am trying to get used to the one-button. Don't know if that one will work out though :)
By the way, I am up to 1 gig now and lovin' it. the 128 really made a difference.

for those interested, apple australia now say they are shipping tons of imacs from china between the 19th and the 23rd.
They are *hoping* to get my iMac to me before november. pfft.
I am seriously considering cancelling my order and waiting for rev. b
stuck in a dilemma now. but really just being irrational because i'm annoyed apple doesn't give a **** about australia.

Hi, I've also been waiting since 31/8 for an Australian delivery.
When they missed yet another ship date I rang today to be initially told that the system said that my iMac had not yet been built. The Apple store person was surprised by this and told me that she would investigate the matter and call me back.
She called back about two hours later to tell me that they "thought" my iMac was one of a number arriving in Sydney tomorrow. She thought I should receive it in Melbourne by Thursday....we shall see....
I have heard before that in Australia we don't get a shipping notification until it leaves the warehouse in Sydney - and so this seems consistent with what the Apple store person told me today. She seemed to genuinely look into it rather than simply give me the answer I wanted to hear (which I have had before!).
By the way - I ordered a 20 inch with 250GB HD, 1GB RAM (2 DIMMS), BT, Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.

Don't we live in the lucky country? what, with the incredible swing of voters IN FAVOUR of right wing politics AND apple doesn't ship us our imacs on time *hmph*
and yes, it is true. Apple australia get these vague memos from Apple US, that seem to go something like... Good morning Apple Australia, we see you are a a large market for imacs and want them desperately. Don't worry that you have orders waiting from 48 days ago, we are sending your 'some' imacs 'soon.
so yeah, they arrive in the country, they sit around in the warehouse and on the dock or whatever for weeks then startrak comes to pick them up and finally, at that moment we get our shipping notification saying "your imac has shipped, it will arrive tomorrow"

If you go to the online Apple Store (AUS) now and set-up the custom config I ordered it says shipping in 2-4 days!!! That's great seeing as though I've been waiting since 31/8.
If you select the base 20 inch it says 2-3 weeks?!?!?
Can't figure it out. Could be a mistake or maybe there are a few too many BTOs on that ship.

It's all a bit bizarre. Please let us know if yours does arrive this week. I only ordered on 16th Sept, and ship date is 26/10......
Regarding BTO's, I had just presumed they did the building on arrival in Oz - you are saying it's all done in China?

From what I understand, the BTOs with bluetooth have a different logic board (happy to be corrected if I am wrong). In that case I imagine they need to be assembled overseas.
Perhaps RAM etc could be added here - but my understanding (based only forum discussions) is that they are all assembled overseas.

I ordering on the 8/31 with a delivery estimate of 10/5.
On 10/8 I get a delay E-mail pushing back to 10/15
Then on 10/15 another delay to 10/22 (at least the delay E-mails are now going out on time).
Apple store people are nice but fundamentally clueless and powerless to do anything. One even informs me that my 'G5' will be made in Cork !
Anyway, imagine my amazement when I did my daily 'more from boredom than hope' check of the Apple store status page.
Its shipped !
Mind you, I have no E-mail confirmation, the Apple tracking page doesnt work and the reference number isnt recognised by the TNT site.
So I'm relieved to inform you all that Apple are maintaining the impressive record of professionalism they have displayed so far.

It's an iMac 17" SD + 512 MB RAM instead of 256 + Bluetooth Desktop
I ordered on 10/15.
My former shipping date was 10/13, then I got an eMail saying it will be shipped on 10/19, well and today it shipped.
Does anybody know wether there is a better way to track your iMac (i'm from Germany)?

Strange. Just tried configuring up a 20" iMac with 1 GB RAM, and another 20" iMac with Bluetooth, but otherwise stock; got the same result every time: two to three weeks.
It's been over six weeks now since I ordered my (stock!) 20" iMac. Still waiting. Rang the reseller, and got the same answer: no news. I suggested that he might contact Apple and try to persuade them to sweeten the pot. He gave me his supplier's contact number for me to ring and try to persuade. :D I mean, if they'd shipped on time, that'd be fine -- but they didn't, it's been double the original estimate, and we're still waiting. I'm tipping arrival some time in November.

weird, must have been a weird problem they were having last night. the 'order status' has not been functioning all day long.
just spoke with apple on the phone (again) according to that woman macs are arriving between the 18th and the 22nd and will be allocated as they arrive. as yet, my mac has not been allocated. she said it would be allocated tonight probably and i should expect it friday or monday. wishful thinking sounds to me. but you never know! if they keep talking out their arse eventually it's going to come true.

Judging by this forum, I can expect shipping to take between 3 days to 3 weeks from Shanghai, though it will probably be 4-8 days. Now it's off to compulsively clicking the Fedex tracking page.

Patience is what is needed, Mac people need to be a patient lot. If you call Apple it is best to do it with a pleasant firm voice. The ones answering the calls are doing the best that they can. They have no real control over the situation.

Be assured, the wait will be worth it. This machine is -- by far -- the best computer I've ever used or owned.
I'll second that. The thing's incredible. Single best purchase (of any kind) I've made in a long time. Satisfaction level is off the charts, and soaring higher everytime I sit down at the thing and learn a little something more. Wish I'd made the switch to Apple a long time ago.

No dead pixels but this machine makes an annoying whining noise out of the box. It appears to be fan-related. I've started going the rounds with Apple Tech Support and it doesn't look good. Oh well, guess I'll start a new thread on the noise issue.

So I ordered my iMac 1.6 Combo / AE / 512 / 80GB a few weeks ago on the online Education store and it hasn't shipped yet. So it occurred to me that I could just call down to the local Apple store here to see if they have any in stock.
so I called the local store, explain that I have placed an online order, and sure enough they have my iMac in stock! They said it shouldn't be a problem to cancel my online order and buy it locally, so they put an iMac on hold for me and transfer my call to the online store so I can cancel my order there. The woman on the online store said she could cancel it no problem, but then I wouldn't qualify for the $99 printer rebate offer since the printer and computer wouldn't be on the same receipt. So I ask her to just keep the order.
Then I call back down to the local store to have them take the iMac off hold. The woman at the local store says that I can just return the printer to them and they will sell me a new printer with my new iMac so it will all be on the same receipt. Woohoo! So I call the online store back to once again cancel the order. The guy says, "sure, I can do that, but if you keep your online order I will give you an additional $50 off". AAH!
So I said sure, let's keep it on the online store. Then I called the local store back to see if they would match that, but they said they can't give any discounts beyond the education price :(. I was so so so so so close to getting my iMac tonight. And now I still have to wait for the one to come from china. Supposed to ship on the 26th of October.
I'm in so much pain. Why must they give me $50... I wanted it now... but can't pass up the $50 off. AAAAGH

Some folks have had replacement PSUs sent to them that reduced the noise, others had Midplane Assemblies sent to them.
My own experience is that the unit's noise level varies from nothing to a barely audible (I believe one fan on) hum to a louder hum, corresponding to ambient room temerature. At or below 75 F, no fan. 75F to 78F one fan. Somewhere around 80 F, more than one fan.
However, the noise of one or even more fans is not annoying, and I don't even think about it, until I read a post where someone says it is too loud.

Oh, I realise this. You catch a lot more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. :D This is a case of "nothing ventured, nothing gained"; in the worst case, I get a stock 20" iMac. In the best case, I get a stock 20" iMac plus a sweetener. :p Either way, I'm still happy. Mostly. :D

Hey another Andy waiting for his iMac in the UK. What are the chances...
I ordered my 17"/Bluetooth bits/160GB/stock on the 6th October. It reported OOB 3rd November, and it shipped on the 17th October. Now I'm not trying to rub salt in the wound by saying that, I'm just saying. I'm having problems with the order tracking too. The apple store tracking page doesn't show anything under "Activity" etc, and the TNT boys ask for a nine digit number, of which there are none in Apple's emails.
Make sure you are on TNT express, not any of the national sites. I think that'll be part of it. Also, I don't think they've taken any money from the bank yet. I haven't had any phone calls from the bank asking to authorise the payment, so I'm hoping this is an apple problem, not a banking one. (I do have the money in the account.)
I think I may give apple a ring and see if the call centre chaps can give me the proper TNT number.
Anybody else in the same boat? (crate?, aeroplane?)

I had similar problems getting the TNT sites to recognise anything. Looking back through some of the posts in this thread, its clear that a different company bulk ships (flies) the iMacs from China and hands them over to TNT here in Europe (Netherlands ??) for final delivery.
Only once they are in the TNT system do they start to track. But once there ARE in its probably just a matter of a day anyway.
However, I did find a link to this site:http://www.apecode.com/appletrack/
This seems to access the tracking info for the bulk shipping firm and worked for me. Apparently mine has been sitting in China for 4 days but is 'booked' on a flight tomorrow.
Fingers crossed... and good luck tracking.

Hey another Andy waiting for his iMac in the UK. What are the chances...
Make that 3 of us. ;)
I ordered the 20" IMac/1GB/250G/SD/BT/APX on September 27th with an OOB of October 25th. So far no sign of anything shipping.
I spoke to one of the store staff yesterday and was told it definately wont ship before the 25th, will take 7-9 days to reach Ireland and then a further 5-7 days to reach me. I was told not to expect anything before mid November. :(
How come I can send packages to China in a couple of days, and yet it takes Apple over 2 weeks? Not to mention half of that time being just from Ireland to England. Do they come by boat or something?
Andy.

I thought that they where Air freighted to the nederlands and then overnighted to the uk via lorry then distributed(my nearest depo is reading)
dont know where Ireland comes into it (though they do assemble Powermacs there I hear)
But, Mine is sat in a crate in Shanghai (since 17th) waiting until tomorrow(21st) to be shipped..YAY!!!! shanghai is 8hours ahead, so we may see an update to our status by tomorrow night!

I think this means that it might have flown out of Shanghai on the 19th. But since its now early on the 21st in China that would have been a very slow flight if it hasn't reached somewhere in Europe [I've seen Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and Ireland mentioned in this thread] by now.
Hi to all the Andy's!
My money was taken out on the day after ordering, but it was via a debit card? Obviously the laws/policies regarding taking funds for payments where the item has not been dispatched are different when paying with, essentially, cash and not credit?
The link for Kuehne-Nagel's tracking (http://www.apecode.com/appletrack/) given above (sorry, I knew it was in this thread somewhere but am lazy) worked for me using the number starting with "80xxxxxxxx" and it's waiting to leave China tomorrow.
What's a few more days after waiting this long anyway.
Good luck with your waiting.

It looks as if a lot of us Europeans are booked on todays flight.
Could it be that they wait to collect enough stuff to fill a plane before dispatching a whole load at once ?
If so this would imply that the people whos computers just missed the last flight get to wait longest whilst those who were delivered yesterday have a chance of making it onto todays flight.
Regarding the destination country:
I only mentioned the Netherlands as the Apple store tracking page says that mine will be delivered by TNT (Netherlands) so it seemed possible to me that this is where they start the ground leg of their journey.
I could well be wrong though.....

Though y'all would like to know that my parents called from the frigid north (well, Portland) and their new 17" SuperDrive iMac arrived. I had asked them to call me so I could walk them through setup but by the time they called they were already playing around with it. They were astonished that the printer "just worked" and that Fast User Switching could be so...fast (stupid XP). My stepdad literally gasped at the cube effect! They couldn't believe that they could print AND surf the web at the same time (stupid XP).
And after they were through with their giddiness I asked with a bit of fear how loud the machine was. And their response: "Is it supposed to make noise? It's silent, is that normal?" Phew. I had been reading horror stories about loud iMacs and was freaking out in my head.
So I though some people on here might want to know that a 17" 1.8 BTO delivered today is silent. Perhaps Apple's nailed the problem.

That's good news. It will make a change from my overclocked, overbloated XP machine that sounds like I've got a turbine in the house.
That machine is being expelled to the garage to mainly act as a server and store my DVD collection on and upload my house's secuirty camera's images to the web.
The iMac already has been treated to a new desk which the PC is not getting anywhere near!
Sad. Yes. But 99.9% of you will understand!

Here's my take on how Apple ships to customers based in Europe, based on prior orders and the several weeks I've spent waiting for my replacement iMac:
> Apple subcontracts assembly of several products (at least iPods and iMacs) to a company called Flextronics. Check out www.flextronics.com
> Once a production run of like configuration iMacs is ready, they are palletized and handed over to Kuene and Nagel. K+N is a bulk freight company and books space on ships/planes/trains for intercontinental transport. In this case K+N organizes available space on cargo flights between Shanghai and Luxembourg, presumably with Luxair. Check out http://www.luxair.lu/luxair/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=151
> Cargo operators typically stop at a few locations en route to their final destination to maximize utilization of the aircraft. Luxair's flight from Shanghai stops in Bangkok and Azerbaijan en route to Luxembourg. As an example, the flight that left today (21-Oct) will actually arrive in LUX on Saturday (23-Oct).
> Once in LUX, it gets placed on a truck (status of "Departed Direct") and shipped to Flextronics Netherlands in Venray (status of "Truck arrived at Apple Shanghai"). This trip typically happens overnight but only on business days. Flextronics in this case is operating as an agent of Apple. There they presumably break up the pallet and label the boxes for distribution.
> TNT Express stops by Flextronics, picks up and scans all the boxes. The truck then goes to their Eindhoven depot to get the boxes en route to the various destinations throughout Europe. It's at this point that the delivery number contained within your shipping email from Apple begins to work on TNT's tracking page.
> Apple typically selects TNT's "Economy Express" option, which normally means 2 business days between Eindhoven and your doorstep.
> Overall this translates into around 7-9 workdays door-to-door, especially if it leaves Shanghai close to the weekend.
I can't believe I have dedicated so much time to follow this thing... I need to seek help.

Just setup an Airport Extreme Base Station plugged into an Ethernet ADSL modem.
Is all Apple stuff so simple to use?
I had my XP machine and an ipaq talking to each other and accessing the net within literally ten minutes (I admit that 5 of those minutes involved screwing the modem and base station to a shelf!) plus iTunes is now streaming around the house with Airport Express, again just plug in and go, all secure too.
The future looks good. Why has it taken me so long to see the light?

Has anyone been watching their Credit Cards online to see what happens before their iMac shipped?
My 1.6 17" 512MB APX was ordered on 9/24 with OOB shipping 10/26.
Last Sunday (10/17) I noticed a $1500 reduction in my available credit (though nothing posted as a transaction) which could only be explained as being the iMac payment being authorized but not processed. Then on Monday, my available credit increased by $1500 -- as if Apple removed the transaction. Then it stayed the same until today, when the available credit decreased by $1500 again (but still not posted).
So here it is 10/21 and the order is still "open".
Has anyone experienced this?
Thanks!

I ordered a 20" BTO 9/22, using the Apple Credit offer - which effectively meant I signed up for a credit card. Initially the available credit went down, then in a few days, back to the full 4 grand. It's still at that limit today, and today was my OOB date. The order is still marked as "open", rather disappointingly.
What happens when the OOB date is passed? Do Apple email a "oops, here's a new OOB" the next day? or next week? or what?
I want my iMac! Don't make me snap and rush off to my local Apple Store and get a 1.8Ghz PowerMac, I'd rather have an iMac...

Not on my end. I've given up haranguing the vendor; Apple will ship it when they ship it, and he'll call me when he wants my money. (He placed the order and told me to keep my credit card in my wallet -- he'd take the money from me closer to the time.) Might give him a call this time next week if there's still no sign.

My email said it was to be delivered on or before 22nd (today!) and, as a previous post helpfully pointed out, it's somewhere in the air/on the ground between China and the Moon, awaiting delivery to The Netherlands. I think that date given is the date that it will be forwarded on to the regional carrier?

After posting that last whinge, I phoned my local Apple store in Seattle - and guess what, they had the 20" in stock. I decided that I could live without the BTO options (extra memory, 250Gb drive) and cancelled my online order. I rushed off to the store and now have a GORGEOUS 20" iMac on my desk. The Apple store also does the $99 Final Cut Express deal - it comes in the retail box obviously - so I'm very happy.
It took me a total of 12 minutes to open up the box, install an Airport Express card and 512Mb of memory from Crucial, and set it up to transfer apps and data from my PowerBook. And that included running down to the basement to find the philips screwdriver.
One trip to the pizza place later, and my new iMac was done and.. well it hung on the network set up. Whoops.. But once reset, it works fine. Crazy to see the exact same desktop (albeit with a larger screen) on the new iMac. The new iMac feels heavy and oozes quality. Very quiet too. Can't see any dodgey pixels. Speakers are nice (was the set-up music Moby, Air or Royskop? I've heard it before! Heck, it's in my iTunes library somewhere, I just know it - there needs to be an option to hum into iTunes and let it find what you meant).
It's currently download software updates (the network did become set up correctly afterall, the wizard just hung for some reason), and looks fabulous. I'm very chuffed. (Hint - if you have a non-Airport access point, you need to precede your hex key with a $ symbol).
So the moral of the story is that if you are still waiting for your iMac, it might be worth while phoning your local Apple Store! Oh, the online store didn't offer me $50 not to cancel...
One question: does the iSight come with a nice way of mounting on the new iMac? There is no way I'm using the self-adhesive disk on this beauty.
Edit: I think the set-up music is Eple by Roysksopp, from Melody AM...?

Sometimes there are advantages to living here in the US.. even if a can of Heinz Beanz cost me $1.70, and a Chunky KitKat was over $2!
Oh, I missed out the best part. After 'phoning the store and getting them to hold their last 20" until I drove the 30 minutes there, I cancelled the online order (my luck would have it go through and I'd end up with two). But when I got to the Apple store, and then waited 20 minutes to speak to someone (thanks for cutting in front of me, you tall bald git with a blue jacket) they denied that I had spoken to anyone and that they had put one on hold for me.
I think they then took one look at my face and decided that before I went Celtic Warrior King on their asses, they might reconsider that move.. heh heh.. They managed to find another one out the back.
The 20" iMac is most definitely is a fine computer. I was so excited to get it all set up, I didn't even stop to take pictures. And I was probably quite rude to the sales dude in the Apple Store, who seemed to be under the impression I was an undecided customer that he had to work in order to sell the system to. I was going "just give it to me now give it to me now" in my head, while he was asking me what sort of things I needed a computer to do. Shesh. And no, really, you don't have to ask me three times, I KNOW how to install an Airport card. I clearly look like some kind of moron, but I've a masters degree in electronics, ok? Just give me the damn computer. No, i don't need to pay $99 for your in-store Pro Service thing, because again, I can actually work a screwdriver enough to install RAM. Now hand me the computer and no-one will get hurt.. Thank you.
So yes, it doesn't help anyone else, it is worth the wait. Really.
