So I don't even need to wait for a 3G model because the tethering from my iPhone is flawless. Been on it all day!! Basically the mywi app creates a tethered wifi network that the iPad sees right away. Amazing. Posted from my IPad while in the car. Haha.

Hmm... had my iPhone jailbroken ages ago but went back to normal as I didn't actually get that much from it to be honest. But this sounds really appealing. Not got iPad yet as Apple haven't told us in the UK anything, but I had decided to go for Wifi-only model and get something like Pay as you go Mifi device as that would be cheaper that buying the 3G iPad model. But if I can use the 3G I'm already paying for on my iPhone, then that makes it even better. I'd even consider buying an iPad with larger capacity then.
It's been a while since I tried jailbreaking. What's the latest thing? Blackrain or something? Is that the one that has MyWi?

The '3' network here in the UK offer a MiFi device - takes a sim card to access 3G internet and creates a wifi network for up to 5 devices to simultaneously access the net.
I've recently got one and its brilliant - been using an 8GB ipod touch as a lightweight browsing device for weeks now. Leave it plugged into the mains and its always available to use at home, or unplug it and it'll provide internet for 8 hours continuously.

This works incredibly well. I have no need for the 3G version at this point.
Only hiccup I found was one website recognized it as a mobile browser. Ah well, I don't use the web based gmail on this anyway.

Yes but what a drain on the iPhone battery, started at 78% and 15 min later was down to 60% on iPhone 3GS. 3G really is crappy on the iPad, not impressive. Is it going to be that sluggish when the 3G iPads come out?

Maybe you have a weak signal or something?
It was coming in just fine on my iPad. All 5 bars though. I was able to browse espn.com in a similar time frame.
I haven't tried Netflix or anything and I wouldn't want to. AT&T would cut me off pretty quickly I assume. :)

I got the wifi only since i planned on tethering. Only problem is that I have iPhone 3G running the latest os 3.1.3. From what I read you can't jailbreak this os. And os 4.0 is going to be out in June which will do who knows what for jailbreaking.
Any tips for jail breaking 3.1.3 and has anyone heard of AT&T getting wise to tethering with mywi? Also i know it runs down the phone battery but if phone is plugged in to a car charger no problems right?

Hey guys, I've got the original iPhone (not one of the 3G versions). At this point I don't want to upgrade my iPhone to 3G until the next iPhone gets released.

Just posted this in another thread.
Just purchased the MyWi (No Rock)
app for my jailbroken iPhone 3GS for $10.
It does not tether the 3GS signal.
In fact, will not even connect unless I
turn the WIFI setting on my iPhone to ON.
No use to tether the WIFI signal I already
have. I need to tether the 3G signal.
Can someone help?
Also, does AT&T charge extra for tethering
3G thru an app like MyWi?
Thanks in advance for the help.

It is using your 3G. MyWi is tricking your iPad into thinking it is just another wireless connection. No extra charge from AT&T but that would not be happy if they found out.

Aaah, so just to confirm....
1. I must keep my WiFi setting turned ON at all
times while using MyWi.
2. MyWi is tethering the 3G connection NOT the WiFi
3. AT&T cannot trace the tethering.
NOTE: I just unplugged my Wifi router and sure enough
MyWi still transmitted the 3G signal to my computer.
This thing friggin' rocks.
My only fear -- new iPhone coming. Will require a
jailbreak that may never happen and I will have to
repurchase the MyWi software (least of my worries)

So mywi isn't going to talk me down to a wifi only iPad just yet. Anyone else feel the same?

so i was thinking about the pros/cons of this way of getting 3g as opossed to waiting for the built-in and decided to go the miwi route as well... this is the stuff i thought about that convinced me...
pros
o i need to carry a mobile phone anyway and i already have an iphone with unlimited data, so it doesn't cut down on the number of devices i need to carry, nor do i have to wait to get an ipad
o since the ipad doesn't know where the internet connection is coming from, it can't enforce rules on how i use it (e.g. downloading stuff from itunes or the app store over a certain size on 3g, voip apps, etc)
o if i have additional devices i need internet access on, i can use those as well
cons
o quick battery drain, so i need to make sure i have power available every couple hours at least
o i need to keep the phone jailbroken

This sounds like a good alternative to getting the 3G version.
My concern is, how often will you have to jail break the iPhone.
Is it something that you have to do with each update or can you just leave your existing OS alone?

This is actually better than getting the 3G ipad. The 3G iPad is heavier, and has a piece of black plastic on the back, which is butt ugly. Plus it's cheaper using tethering.

This worked great. I tried it the day I got the iPad.
But for people thinking this could be the decision between the 3g and non 3g remember that using your iphone as a hotspot drains the battery like crazy.
Side note: if you live in a cold climate the iphone can be a pretty good hand warmer when you have mywi on :)

I"m using MyWi too and it is pretty amazing. Great speed!
I'm concerned that it's using a lot of data though. It seems to use more than if I just surf on the iphone. It will be interesting to see if this spike shows up on my ATT bill and if they do anything about it.
Interestingly last night my ipad ceased playing with my home router altogether (I am getting a bit mad at the wifi issue!) but I was able to connect via the iphone tether instead...
I'm on a UK 3g jailbroken and unlocked iphone. I need it to allow my ATT sim to work in the US and I'm keeping it on 3.01. Sooner or later I'm sure I'll have/want to update to 4.0 but I'd need to be convinced that a jailbreak is available that can keep the tethering/unlock option available.
I'm still wondering if I should swap the ipad for a 3g version though as I'm not worried about the cost but I'd like the flexibility. Right now given the wifi issue I figure I could get Apple to swap this model up. (timing is everything).

Yes, you can do that with any compiled app. Just create a wrapper for it.

Yes, it will give you a binary certificate which is used to codesign(DRM) an app. I think there's stuff on the net that allows you to codesign using a dummy developer certificate.

There's no root access on non-jailbroken phone. So SCP won't work. Xcode's build workflow already does the copying. How else does your .app get installed for testing? This method works without jailbreaking.

Same with Mifis, don't even need an iPhone :)
This is becoming more and more apparent to me. I have Sprints Overdrive unit and 4g coming here in June, hell the 3g coverage is so much better so far on Sprints network than AT&T's I'm seriously considering dumping the iPhone for something else. (No clue what just yet) Every app i used on my iPhone daily is working on the iPad and imo many times more enjoyable on the larger screen.
I don't really have any major complaints with AT&T's voice service, but I'm done waiting for them to let us tether and with them specifically having a data plan for the iPad I doubt they will come out with a tethered solution anytime soon. I have no issues paying for the bandwidth, just done waiting for what is already available, and appearing to be just as fast in my area, with much better coverage. Sitting at my house, my iPhone has 3 bars of Edge only coverage... Sprint Overdrive device has 4 of 6 bars of 3g with speed tests showing 1.0 to 1.3mb dl speeds and 500 to 640kpbs up over the first week of use. My cable internet is cap'd at 3mb as I live outside a bit out of the metro area so the mifi unit is challenging the cable during peak hours for speed, which is sad...but a fact of what's available.

MyWi still transmitted the 3G signal to my computer.
This thing friggin' rocks.
My only fear -- new iPhone coming. Will require a
jailbreak that may never happen and I will have to
repurchase the MyWi software (least of my worries)
ok
OK you are getting everything wrong...it just has to transmit as wifi so the ipad and laptops can connect to it

Do not install mywi on rock. It will kill your phone. I mean mine really take abused on mywi install via rock. The heat really unacceptable. And it drains battery like theres no tomorrow. Install the mywi on cydia and choose no rock extension.
Hmmm, I should have tried this option. Is it safe to uninstall Rock and MyWi through Cydia and then reinstall MyWi No Rock? Right now tethering works fine so I'd really hate to screw that up.

Brilliant!
So much I don't know and I appreciate
the help.
So, I can easily just switch out the SIM
card from the new iPhone back to my
old 3GS and it is still usable?
Not if Apple decides to go with a microSIM card in the next iPhone revision. The iPad 3G uses a microSIM card, so it stands to reason that Apple may go that same route with the new iPhone this summer.

This will work on a Mac also with a 3.1.2 phone? whats the deal with the trial version of MiWi? I want to use the 3G from the phone to run the Ipad when I am mobile
Yes there is a Mac version on the website I linked u to. The free trial lasts 10 days then it's 10 dollars. That's what mywi does it let's you turn your phone into a hotspot for your iPad or whatever else u want to connect to.
Maybe try installing it from cydia like the other poster said because it does run my battery dead on my phone pretty fast and I installed it with rock it works great tho.

Do you have to clear the phone before you do this (clear content apps, music etc.) or can you just leave them on there? once you JB you can still sync music etc or no, I know you can't upgrade software until there's a JB fix for it

So. I have 3.0.1 installed on my iPhone 3gs. Used Redsnow to jailbreak and I've installed MyWi using Rock, Cydia, and just now purchases it over Cydia (MyWi no rock). I still can not get the thing to work. Anybody have any ideas? I have my wifi on, I can get a 3G signal, My iPad can see my network and connects to it, but it gives me a 169.254 IP address. When I try to connect to a web site, I get the " not connected to the Internet" message. I've read a bunch of threads but nothing has helped. Any Ideas?

Try changing the wifi channel around between 1, 6 or 11. On the iPad, do a "Forget this Network" and reconnect again.

It does not sound that difficult, given that you are a developer. What I cannot figure out is how you buy MyWi if you do not have a jail-broken phone. It seems you must first jail brake, load Cydia, or whatever, and then you can download MyWi or whatever.

I think you are missing the point. You can create any app if you are a developer and install it on your phone. But if it's doing anything apple doesn't like you just cant distribute it in mass. So you could recreate the mywi app if you could code and install on your phone. Thus to think there is a way to take an existing app and somehow rework it to install via your developer credentials iis not far fetched. However still may be impossible.

My friend has MyWi on his original iPhone. So we plugged it in the charger and went on our way. It worked fine w/ the iPad, granted we were going at EDGE speeds but I could see how this would be useful. My only issue is that his phone got pretty hot after around 10 min of usage. So we shut it off and decided not to use it and charge it at the same time.
Any of you MyWi users experience this? I used PDANet on my Original iPhone back in the day and it never got that hot, I would say at most warm, although PDANet would often drain the battery faster than it was charging. Is it better to use USB tethering?
I'm thinking about getting another iPhone for my tethering needs, but may end up getting a MiFi or an Android phone.

I don't know. Personally I would probably keep baseband and upgrade to 3.1.2, and then jailbreak and get mywi with no rock :-) that would be my plan
In other news, tethering is saving my life right now. I'm at this place that wants to charge $55 bucks for 3 days of internet. Ridiculous!!!!!!

The difference is whether you want to unlock the iPhone or not. Upgrading to 3.1.2 still provides you ways to unlock the iPhone, however, as far as I know, 3.1.3's baseband will be trickier, or even impossible, to unlock.
In a nutshell, jailbreak can work up to 3.1.3, while unlock only up to 3.1.2.
If you just want to tether, but don't bother unlock. 3.1.3 should be ok for you. At least, that's what I do right now. Not a fan of AT&T, but not against it either.

Absolutly love MyWi with the iPad. It kills battery life on the iPhone 3gs though. It locked my iphone one time to the point that the ONLY fix was to restore, so Im 3.1.3 instead of 3.1.2 since iTunes no longer lets you restore to an older firmware, even with the Option + Restore trick. Even modified the host. Made a custom 3.1.3 to flash that doesn't touch the baseband so Im good. Working great now though. Love internet anywhere and I already pay for a data plan. Not going to buy two, even when my iPad 3G shows up. I just wanted the option and need the GPS chip.

If you have a developer account, it's entirely possible. It's just a matter of decompressing the file and wrapping it in xcode. It's can get a bit tricky, with of trial and error, so we're hoping the man who accomplished this already can post the tutorial, for the rest of us, so it will work right off the bat. I'm keeping the faith! haha

As I just posted in response to someone else's issue, we had a thread recently with similar symptoms, and turned out the user was running iPhoneOS 3.0. Need 3.1.2, IIRC, to get MiWi to work. He/she upgraded, and it solved the problem.

I found this thread yesterday.
And I can kiss a good hour of my life away working-out what all that means.
Here's the theory.
There is an XCode template called Crappstore. This is the source of the "wrapper".
Installing this into XCode lets you build and run existing .ipa bundles. Presumably the unsigned app is embedded inside some kind of legitimised signed xcode app.
So the theory to get MiWi running is.
1) Download the MiWi file from somewhere. It is a Cydia (DEB) package.
2) Open up the DEB file and turn it into a IPA file.
3) Use XCode, Crappstore and this new IPA to install it onto an non-jailbroken phone.
That's the theory.
In practice .. I get a Codesign error in step 3.
Nor will it run on the simulator.
Perhaps someone else could have a go!

Carniphage, so w/o jail-braking how did you get your mits on MyWi????? That is what is stopping most developers who would be interested in trying this.
It's like this: if you have anything older than a 3Gs w/ 3.1.3 (new bootrom) then you just jailbrake and buy MyWi. You are not interested in this process. If you have a 3Gs w/ 3.1.3 (new bootrom) then you are very much interested in this process BUT as you cannot jailbrake you cannot download MyWi to even try this.
So - where can we try/buy MyWi w/o jailbraking?????
And I am going to scream if one more person posts "Just jailbrake your phone and don't worry about all this codesign stuff." For crapsake we (3Gs 3.1.3 new bootrom owners) cannot do that!

You don't need Cydia to get packages from the Repos. Cydia is a front end for apt. You can use apt to get the packages on your computer and modify them as instructed above.
Google apt for more info.

If you are on the latest firmware (3.1.3) on a 3GS, you are currently not able to jailbreak if you haven't already.

I have yet to hear anyone, outside of
developers who have been able to get
MyWi working on an unjailbroken phone.
Yes, if you jailbreak your phone you can
go back to the original firmware.
You simply reset the iPhone via iTunes.
My only concern would be that if you
started with, say 3.1.2, when you restore
it will upgrade to the newest firmware
which you will not be able to jailbreak again
at the moment.
I may be wrong in some of this so I look
forward to other answers.
The main point I wanted to drive home is
that jailbreaking is VERY easy and for the
most part VERY safe. You can reset the
phone back to its original state quite easily.
Be sure to do a full backup first before
doing anything.

My WiFi and Bluetooth are turned on. No difference in battery life from before and after jailbreaking. Just be sure that if you installed MyFi, that you keep it off unless you are actually tethering. MyFi will suck the life out of your iPhone.

Step 2 involves running a CLI command to expand the DEB - to reveal the app.
Dragging the app into iTunes (no longer) creates an ipa.
The IPA file seems to be just a ZIP file containing the app, the icon and some other pref data. I think this is where I am going wrong.
Step 3 is dragging the IPA file into the Crappstore project and building it.

So if I understand this right, the .app file INSIDE the .deb file, now needs to be converted into a .ipa file?

I am not much better.
As I understand it. The Crappstore will create a valid app - which contains the "illegitimate" app. To build the app - you need to drag the IPA package into a MyWi project folder and build.
So we need to create a valid IPA file from the app inside the DEB package.
As far as I can tell. IPAs are just ZIP files containing the app, the icon and some other pref stuff.

I used MyWi on my iPhone 3G for 45 minutes yesterday, running the battery down from 90% to about 50%. I shut down the MyWi app, and then saw a few hours later my phone had only 20% battery remaining, and it was fully dead a few hours after that. This type of battery drain is not typical for my phone, and this has not happened after previous uses of the MyWi app.
I am certain I shut down MyWi, so I don't know what else was going on that would kill my battery so fast. Is this behavior typical? Was something left running in the background?
I have very mixed feelings about this MyWi solution. It's been buggy and now there's this phantom battery drain.

I know tethering uses lots of battery, but I stopped tethering and shut down MyWi at 50% battery level. The phone lost another 30% in a few hours - with no additional use of any kind. Dead shortly after. Something ate that remaining 50% of battery life, that's my point.

For me, mywi always keeps running after I turn it off. The next time you use it, check to see if it is still broadcasting a wifi signal. Mine does. The only way to really stop it is to reboot my phone. Annoying, yes, but I don't really use it all that much.

I've used MyWi before and this is the first time I've had this problem (apparently not turning off even though it indicates it has).
This app has been inconsistent and buggy, I'd hardly describe it as "amazing." With the launch of the iPad, hopefully another developer will recognize this opportunity to make a lot of cash by providing a competitive solution that actually works well. I'd pay more for a better app.

I have non-jailbroken 3.1.3 and have MyWi running on it. I just created a wrapper on .app, codesign with my developer credentials, gets installed via Xcode and it works.
Currently figuring out how MyWi works. It's using private frameworks which Apple won't allow in the Appstore. Better if the just implement Wifi tether in the OS.
Since I just signed up for the developer program, I thought I'd give this a try.
I can't see, though, how this can work with MyWi, which requires some additional libraries to be installed that, I think, can only be installed on a jailbroken phone.
But I've been looking at PdaNet - this doesn't seem to have that same issue....but although I've converted the cydia deb file to an IPA
("ar vx filename.deb", and then untar the data.tar.gz file, find the PdaNet.app file, and put it in a folder named "Payload", and then zip that into a file you rename PdaNet.ipa).......I can't get the crappstore project to fully build. I'm getting an error on the codesign - the project builds, the various scripts unzip the ipa and copy stuff into place, but when xcode tries to do the "codesign -f -s.....", I get an error:
"............/PdaNet/build/Release-iphoneos/PdaNet.app: code object is not signed"
Any ideas? Anybody gotten a crappstore-wrapped ipa to properly work?
(I know my base developer credentials are fine - I got iProxy up and running and installed on my non-jailbroken phone just fine....so I must be missing something, or there's something in the PdaNet.app that's messing things up, but I can't figure it out).

But I've been looking at PdaNet
If you want PdaNet to work - why not just build and run iProxy? iProxy is a PdaNet-a-like distributed as XCode source.

But seriously...is anyone worried about being overcharged from AT&T because of the "misuse" of the unlimited data? Or at which point should someone start to worry? And when I say worry, I say it in a not so threatening "oh no..AT&T is going to charge me" way, but a "AT&T is going to charge me...darn." kind of way.

Does no one else have this problem or is everyone else just ignoring it? Still happens to me.

For me, the solution is to either deal with the bugs in mywi or not have the internet at some places. I connect my iphone to an external battery while at school and surf the net on my iPad. It works for me because I leave it on for a few hours at a time. If I was tethering for 10 minutes every hour or so, I'd really be looking hard at getting the iPad 3G.

Well I fixed it by downgrading to 3.4.2.
The issue started for me on 3.4.3.

You have to actually go in and switch it to OFF from within the app.

Trying out MyWi for the first time; however, I ran into minor problem such as not connecting to internet. Tried on my mac and gave the same message as ipad. Then checked network under mac setting and was given self-assigned ip address, so I know it's not working. I was able to tether thru bluetooth and usb, but not wifi. I changed from 1-11 channels and none works. Also, am I suppose to see any signal bars from iPhone because it was showing no bars at all?
If you are using WEP you may want to check the key. MyWi auto fills a short key with 0's to complete the key length. You need to match it on your connecting devices.

I have actually noticed it sometimes does not want to turn off but turning it off from the app and then turning off Wifi from the Settings usually works for me when I have tested it.

Is WiFi Available. (if No continue)
Is there a cellphone signal (If Yes continue)
Is using your iPhone out of the question (if Yes continue)
Do you have your iPad with you(if Yes continue)
Does Paying $15 a month seem overpriced for covering this rare eventuality?(if Yes continue)
A: Jailbreak.

I'm currently on a road trip from Dallas, Texas to Ames, Iowa. Riding shotgun with my iPhone on MyWi and my iPad logged in :)
Currently in the Kansas city area. Getting about 2 mbits on speediest and the ABC app is working flawlessly!

Sorry for the dumb newbie question but, will I have to keep the ipad and iphone connected to each other to be able to use mywi or can it be done wirelessly? How quick are you able to access mywi? I keep picturing that its a long process to do. I would only want mywi like 3-4 hours a week and don't want it to be a hassle.

No. The iphone and ipad are not physically connected. It is done wireless.
It is a very simple process and perfect for someone like yourself who only needs occasional 3G access.

I use MyWi on a Iphone 3G to get internet access on my Ipad. It does work, but only for a few minutes at a time. After 3-5 minutes the connection just dies. There are no error messages, and nothing else that indicates something is wrong. To get network back I have to tunrn wifi off/on on my Ipad, and use the Fix Tethering option in MyWi. Annoying..

How bad does it make the battery life on your iphone? I'm considering using it on my 3GS with an iPad, is it terrible?

It *was* bad. A couple of hours use with MyWi would take a charge down from 100% to 20%
However, the (very) new version of MyWi has a variable power setting. I can't see why you'd want more than minimal power. Set it to 30% - and I think you'd get 5 or 6 hours of sharing.

Awesome, just got my Ipad yesterday. Waiting patiently for the 4.0 jailbreak, $20 for the app now, still well worth it :)

Yup, unless you are upgrading from the previous
version then it is $10.
Well worth the $20 cost. You are saving hundreds
per year in tethering costs.
BTW, Spoke to the company. Anyone having disconnect
problems with the new version should download the update
as it takes care of all the problematic issues that buyers
were initially having. Way to go!

The new version has a low power mode. So the handwarmer function has been disabled.
$20 is still a bargain in my book.

Thank Goodness you see the light.
My God, $20 is NOTHING compared
to what you are saving in tethering
costs from AT&T each month.

LOL @ all the mywi + ipad folks. What a terrible way to tether
I tether via bluetooth, and I am able to get perfect 3G speeds from Verizon. (without paying for tethering plan)
You can tether using any smartphone / dumbphone (provided that phone has bluetooth capability + data plan) iPhone currently not supported, but currently in the works to be supported by ibluever.
App is called 'ibluever' and is only $5 compared to the horsecrap you call mywi which is $20.
go to ibluever.blogspot.com for bluetooth dun capabilities.
One benefit i get from using this is the AMPLE battery life I get while tethered.
