ok, i have a simple question, if i order an ibook 12" 1ghz from apple store.........for 1,099 how much will apple charge me with the taxes and all??

same as whatever the sales tax is in the state you'll have the machine shipped to.

apple has nation-wide presence. so regardless of where apple is located, you are charged the appropriate state sales tax. (even if there's no official "apple retail store" in your state.)

I second this... Sorry... Tax where ever you buy it... Sorry.

to summarize:

if you qualify for an edu. discount, order from apple if edu. discount + tax price is lower than un-discounted price.

otherwise, order from a "reputable" company without nationwide presence. i ordered from j&r which is a NY company and i live in MI. it ended up $10 or so more expensive than apple's edu price but apple didn't have the machine in stock and j&r did, so i went with j&r.

if you want BTO, you generally have to order from apple.
