I have looked at the buyers guide, and its ~55 days until the 'average' refresh time period for a new iPod classic. But, a store near where I live in the UK is opening as a authorised reseller, and on opening day there is 10% of everything. I thought this would be a great chance for me to get a new iPod classic as my current 80GB is too small.

But, I am not sure if there is actually going to be a new model coming out soon (haven't heard any rumours or anything), and secondly I was thinking of buying an iPad when it comes out in the UK since I don't really used my iPod classic unless I go on holiday, where it is then used constantly through out the holiday (all the time).

I don't really have the cash to spend on both, nor would I want to. Any suggestions?

Buyer's Guide sounds a bit screwy.

I can't remember a time in the last few years when the iPod Classic has been updated outside of September.

Maybe I'm wrong though.

I think it's maybe a bit more difficult to get the Classic open but it was very easy (and cheap) for me to replace the hard drive in my 5G iPod. A 60Gb hard drive cost me £30 on eBay, I'm sure you could get a new hard drive for less than the price of a whole new unit.

Anyhow, I really, really wouldn't expect them to update the Classic before September. Out of all the iPods Apple pays it the least attention.

What type of hard drive does the iPod use, it can't be a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive since that's too wide isn't it? Also, how would you go about installing the firmware?

I believe the iPod uses a 1.8" HDD.

^You're right its a 1.8" drive.

OP, just buy it...very little chance that it'll come out any other month than september...
and if i were you i'd buy the classic as its cheaper and has more than double storage

Yeah 1.8" Just google and you'll be able to find out all about the connection etc. There are lots of tutorials on how to do it (there's basically five steps to it - open iPod casing, disconnect battery, disconnect headphone jack, disconnect hard drive, repeat in reverse)

Helpfully people on ebay tend to list "xGB hard drive suitable for ipod xG"" I just found someone with a good rating and good reviews.

And when you plug it into iTunes a message'll pop up saying it needs to be restored, restoring reinstalls the firmware.

1.8" Toshiba hard drive, has to be Toshiba as it has the zif connection.
