Ipod synched to Itunes and lost movie

Hello. I bought a movie for my daughter last night. Thought I would back it up today on Itunes but of course now that I did that I can't find the movie in my ipod touch OR on my itunes. It is not in movies in either place. I am mad that I paid $10 for a movie that we can't watch!

I downloaded a bunch of free movies from stanford, and they disappeared as well. I did happen to sync today and that is probably what deleted them. I see no evidence that the sync would put the movies on my macbook. Strangely, a sync yesterday did not bother the movies. I also see another strange behavior. When I down load moves from the series, it groups them in sets under similar looking icons when they should probably all be under one icon.
