Yes. Somebody even reported that they used an ipod connector with the iPad and it worked also.

No. Sort of. This will work for videos, YouTube and Keynote. NOT things like mail, Safari, etc.
I dont really see the point. you still gotta look at the ipad to do anything. only real purpose for this is how apple has it setup. videos, slideshows etc.
