Do you mean the iTunes Music Store? Maybe it's because the artists changed their minds about allowing their songs there. Otherwise, I haven't the faintest idea as to why they're disappearing.

what songs/ artists have been removed?

from what i understnad its not apple who remove artists its the record company. Apple give them some kind of special software for adding and altering the artists they have on the store, so that the record companies can remain in control of what happens with the music.
