GOP Mailing Warns Liberals Will Ban Bibles

WASHINGTON - Campaign mail with a return address of the Republican National Committee (news - web sites) warns West Virginia voters that the Bible will be prohibited and men will marry men if liberals win in November.

The literature shows a Bible with the word "BANNED" across it and a photo of a man, on his knees, placing a ring on the hand of another man with the word "ALLOWED." The mailing tells West Virginians to "vote Republican to protect our families" and defeat the "liberal agenda."

Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie said Friday that he wasn't aware of the mailing, but said it could be the work of the RNC. "It wouldn't surprise me if we were mailing voters on the issue of same-sex marriage," Gillespie said.

The flier says Republicans have passed laws "protecting life," support defining marriage as between a man and a woman and nominate conservative judges who will "interpret the law and not legislate from the bench." It does not mention the names of the presidential candidates.

Jim Jordan, a spokesman for American Coming Together, described the mailing as "standard-issue Republican hate-mongering."

Gillespie said same-sex marriage is a legitimate issue in the election. President Bush (news - web sites) has proposed amending the Constitution to ban gay marriage. Democratic Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) also opposes gay marriage but said a constitutional amendment is going too far.

The RNC also is running radio ads in several states urging people to register to vote.

"There is a line drawn in America today," one ad says. "On one side are the radicals trying to uproot our traditional values and our culture. They're fighting to hijack the institution of marriage, plotting to legalize partial birth abortion, and working to take God out of the pledge of allegiance and force the worst of Hollywood on the rest of America."

"Are you on their side of the line?" the ad asks before making the plea to "support conservative Republican candidates."

This is definitely become the "limbo" campaign for the GOP. As in "how low can you go." I hate to think what's next from this crowd.

Roger, when I posted the thread I didn't mean for the claims in the Republican ad to be taken seriously. You are right; Kerry would never approve of banning the Bible. I was trying to point out how outrageous the GOP has gotten in its campaign rhetoric.

And the Rove-wing media would instantly debate the authenticity of such statements. With banners under the talking heads screaming "DOES KERRY EAT BABIES?" and "KERRY: CANNIBAL MONSTER?" 'cause if scandalous lies are propagated in the form of a question blazing out in text at the bottom of the screen, it's still "news" and not "propaganda."

In the case of Nazi Germany a few psychotic zealots were able to draw the rest of their country along into some of the worst genocide and war atrocities since the invention of the cannon. How were they drawn in? Why by citing their enemies as the cause of the failing economy and the decay of society of course. Sound familliar?

The most vocal (nutcases) of the 60's were a little too into experimentation with the really questionable drugs. The Manson Family, the Jones Massacre, the Simbionese Army, etc. All of these were groups that were more or less totally shunned by even the rest of the social-revolutionaries of the time.

They, and the second and third commers to Haight Ashbury (Tourist-Hippies) got 90% of the press that wasn't peaceful protests. It was easy for the conservative older generation to assume that even the tame peaceniks were just biding their time.

Add to this the round of truly over-the-top commune-religions of the seventies and it's a little easier to see how the conservative Christians at the far right would feel that they were a Righteous Island in a sea of perversity. The backlash from that group to all that goofiness is the jackbooted conservatism we're dealing with today. So I suppose in a sense, the very things that made that period so critical to the social maturation of America contributed directly to the puckering of it's conservative anus.

Between a new "expose" media and all these juicy freakazoids that were more than happy to be on camera it must have seemed that Babylon had come to Jerusalem. Those who lived in the places being reported on (SF, LA, NY State) knew better but the middle of the nation had almost no clue.

Many people are not aware of views and news from outside their state, unless they see or hear a 5 second soundbite on the evening news. I am guilty of this in the past. It took living in Dallas for a year in the time of Gulf War I to realize that not everyone was a registered Democrat, that not everyone can find a job that equals their abilities, and there is life outside of DC Beltway.
