Apple's online stores (http://store.apple.com/) around the world are currently down for maintenance, and it is widely believed that the company is rolling out updated MacBook Pro models (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/10/macbook-pro-updates-imminent-really-part-numbers-appear/).

AppleInsider reports (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/04/13/sources_reveal_specs_of_apples_macbook_pro_refresh.html) that it has received last-minute information from a source that has proved reliable in the past showing model numbers and partial descriptions for six new MacBook Pro models spanning all three existing sizes. According to the report, the base configuration models will utilize processors ranging from 2.4 GHz to 2.66 GHz, with 4 GB of RAM standard across the board.

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2010/04/13/072000-mbp_refresh.jpg

The processor speeds included in the report suggest that Apple may be using Intel's new Core i5-520M (2.4 GHz), i5-540M (2.53 GHz) and i7-620M (2.66 GHz). Those chips were introduced (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/07/ces-2010-intel-officially-announces-core-i7-i5-and-i3-chips-suitable-for-apple-notebooks/) in January had been rumored last month (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/19/intel-experiencing-shortages-of-notebook-chips/) to be in short supply as Intel struggled to meet demand.

Sources for today's report have also indicated that Apple may be using three different screen types on the new MacBook Pro models, although no detail is provided beyond their descriptions of Glossy, High Resolution Glossy, and High Resolution Glossy with Anti-Glare. Finally, a source has indicated that Apple may offer solid-state drives of up to 512 GB with the update, up from a maximum of 256 GB in current models.

Interesting.

I see "SD" after all of them except the 17. Does SD stand for SuperDrive? If so, it seems our 17 has lost its optical drive, and I'd be way more than okay with that!

forgive me for my lack of knowledge on this, but the way they explained it in the post, it appears that the 15" would have the i7 and the higher 2.66Ghz than the 17", am I reading it wrong and since when have you been able to configure a 15" to be more powerful than a 17"? I've had a 17" late 2007 MBPro since October 2007 and CAN'T go down to 15" now that I've had a 17" but with my high end audio / video work, I want the most powerful workhorse I can get my hands on and that BETTER be a 17"! Maybe I'll just wait to see how they REALLY pan out on Apple's site before I get all worried.

I hope this happens today. I've been waiting since January while my computer slowly limps to its death. I should've gotten a Mac 5 years ago when my dad said to get one. But now it is soon. It better be. It's gotten too sureal. This morning I awoke to a dream of me at my local Apple store and they were having a BIG event unveiling new products; The iDog (An Apple Hot Dog cooker.), The iCorn (An Apple Hot Air Popcorn Popper), The iFondue. Well you get the picture. But not a MBP in the bunch. I must say though, the iCorn looked very sexy all white and smooth....Please my fragile psyche is hanging in the ballance.:)

that will be great....quad cpu on 13 MBP....

There are many different models of the i3, i5 and i7 CPUs. Google for "Intel Price List" to find all the different models. The mobile quad core i7 runs only at 1.6 or 1.73 GHz. Not sure whether I would be too keen on that.

The 520, 540 and 620 are all dual core + hyperthreading. And the only difference seems to be the clock speed, and a slight difference in cache size. Otherwise there is no difference between the mobile i5 and mobile i7.

The mobile dual core i5 has hyperthreading, just like the mobile dual core i7. Intel has made its processor names (intentionally? ) confusing. The only difference between the rumoured i5-520, i5-540 and i7-620 is clock speed and a tiny difference in cache size.

SD = Secure Digital card reader built in. The 17 has a express port. Very bad idea on Apples part. The only thing that can save it is a built in e-sata port otherwise high end users lose big time on external fast hard drives. Reason I may just hold onto my 15 inch late 2008 model with express port.

Seriously this is a major problem for high end photographers and graphic professional. We need fast external connections for storage and backup. Not to mention scratch disk and such. I'm totally passing if there is not a quad core in this mix. I have 4 laptops and a Ipad and if this downsizing to laptops continues I may have to go back to a PC. Let's see what happens but a MacPro does not travel around the world well to work.

Well I hope Apple do include at "LEAST" a 700 or 800 series i7 processor in the 17inch...I want quad core not dual core

Also, and more importantly from what I can tell to others, is the 600 series i3, i5 and i7's all have "included Intel" GPU's...

See below:

Mobile Core i7 600 Series
The Core i7 600 series actually consists of two seperate model types, those being low voltage and standard voltage. The low voltage products have a L attached to their model names.
Besides power draw, however, these models are basically the same. They have clock speeds ranging from 2 to 2.66 Ghz. They are dual core processors with Turbo Boost and hyper-threading. The Turbo Boost feature is just slightly more aggresive on the low voltage products than the standard voltage ones. These processors all have 4 megabytes of L3 cache. Also, all of these processors include an integrated graphics processor.

Sorry to get your hopes down guys but... Most likely an i3 on the 13" i5 on the 15" i7 on the 17". 4GB of ram on all. Modest upgrade to video cards. Same unibody design.

Thats my bet :) nothing overly crazy.

And that was why I didn't mind buying my MBP last month. I've seen the updates when they come out and they have never made me regret keeping my old computer.

Not per se. If you want to watch a bluray movie on the go (in your car, ...), you probably don't take a 21.5" or 27" iMac into your car with an external supply of giant kick-ass batteries to power your iMac... You just take a laptop to watch it...

1GB VRAM is unlikely since the highest density GDDR3 is currently 1Gb (128MB) and Apple only has space for 4 chips for 512MB max. Those specs are also inconsistent since it's unlikely that Apple would go to all the trouble to source a GPU (GT330M) just to use it in only 1 model.

I'm still hoping for a last minute reprieve to get ATI HD5000 series graphics. Although the only good thing about this rumour is that a GT335M would at least be acceptable from a performance standpoint to ATI's mid-range GPUs.

I'm no nvidia fan but nvidia have fast card switch tech in optimus and the mobile versions aren't as bad as you think. They are based on old tech but the newer tech needs more power and heat dissipation is a problem if you want to keep the form factor.

Don't worry. Most people who buy used macbooks in my experience don't know alot about them anyway. If it looks the same and the processor is about the same GHz, they don't care. They don't notice things like bus speed, etc. A friend of mine just sold his 3 year old mb for $650. Had physical damage, small HDD, etc. Why was it easy? Oh, it's still a 2GHz computer

Why do they take the store down for so long? I would have thought that they would set up and validate the new content on an offline copy, and even do a dry run of the update process using offline copies, so that the real update could take minutes rather than hours.

Given how disruptive these store updates are, and the fact that this is worldwide, I'm really hoping that Apple will use this outage as the opportunity to open up iPad pre-orders for the next countries to get it (e.g. the UK).

Why only 4 Gigs on the high end? Is that4 upgradable at least?

There's a reason that Apple lets you build to order on their website. ;)

The spec lists you see with the model numbers are the actual prebuilt models that will show up at retail.

Because 8 Gigs is still relatively expensive.

I'm no nvidia fan but nvidia have fast card switch tech in optimus and the mobile versions aren't as bad as you think. They are based on old tech but the newer tech needs more power and heat dissipation is a problem if you want to keep the form factor.
nVidia has no newer tech, Fermi DX11 GPUs, available as mobile processors. And ATI's current generation, like the HD5650 is faster than the GT330M while having lower power consumption/thermals at 15-19W TDP compared to 23W TDP for GT330M.

I just don't think Optimus is that useful since I think the IGP will be sufficient for what most users do on battery, like web surfing, video watching, word processing, etc. Neither does Optimus help if you are a constant heavy GPU users since you'd be on discrete GPU anyways. Optimus only helps battery life if you are an occasional heavy GPU user since then you'd be constantly needing to switch back and forth between IGP and discrete GPU. When plugged in, Optimus is pretty irrelevant.

This might have been said already. But I just phoned apples UK line and "The revolutionary iPad" is product number two to pre order.

So at least that is some of it.:)

Most do - but it's usually a lot cheaper to buy and upgrade yourself. It's quite easy.

The most comfortable way is to buy from a partner store (not from apple directly), they will do all the necessary upgrades at very reasonable prices

This doesn't make sense.

You don't think Optimus is useful because using a lower power IGP while on battery is enough and having the power of a dedicated GPU while plugged in would provide a nice boost.

Either you meant the opposite or you're just dazed and confused wrestling with your credit balance as you desperately try to make room before the store is back up in a few minutes...

Oh come on already FFS! I've been waiting for this for 3 months. I sold my old (first gen) Mac Book Air 2 month ago so have been without a laptop at home for ages and have to do with the iMac.

Saying that, since a friend in the US sent me an iPad over to the UK that's been great for browsing and emailing at home.

Still, I need a MBP for work for when I'm in the US for a month in July so as long as they release before then I'm fine.

I am still worried that it's just iPad 3G in the US and iPad Wireless for rest of world - updates on the sites rather than MBP updates! Hope not but I still remember the Aperture 3 disappointment!

Whenever I've bought a new PowerBook/MacBook Pro after they have been announced, they are usually available in the Apple stores the next day after the announcement, but sometimes 2 to 3 days as well. I don't think I have ever been able to buy one the same day of the announcement.

Thanks... I'm uber impatient at this point... I've been waiting for the last 4 months for this refresh, and I'm going out of town for 6 days starting Thursday. I REALLY want to get it before I go. Here's hoping for overnight shipping and immediate availability. :)

Now, Should I get a 512 GB SSD or a 500 GB Hard Drive for Final Cut?:)

Depends if you have a boatload of cash to spend.

You could always get an SDD to editing projects and move them to your HDD once they are finished. (I would get a smaller SSD for the laptop and have a huge HDD at home to backup and store finished projects.)
