Good stuff, AMD do rather RAWK! Now then Apple/IBM, let's sort the PowerBook out with a 64Bit CPU huh?

Now this means Apple has no excuses to not make a 64bit G5, if Apple can market the first consumer 64bit desktop processor, then they should at least be able to make a mobile 64 soon.....

This is he final straw for me. Apple better make the next update in the pbook a G5. I do not care if they have to kill the 12" to do it(just intro it again when it is possible). If the pbook gets a G4 in the next rev big Mac fanatics will wait another 9 months to buy it. Apple will only have switchers for there pbook sales. I do not care if we have to wait intill Paris for the pbooks to get updated either(means ibook will be crippled too).
Ok, I am done talking nonesense. ;) But, I wouldn't mind the murder of the 12" because then the demand for mine will increase since it is so historic. :p

Combine this news with the recent first notebooks using PCI-express, and look for companies such as Alienware to come out with some very impressive gaming/desktop-replacement notebooks in very short order.
Whenever Apple comes out with the G5 powerbooks, surely this sort of competition has to be addressed.

its funny how people still miss the importance of the operating system when talking about 64bit processors
yes, apple makes a 64bit processor, yes OS X is supposed to be able to support the g5 chip
AMD can make all the 64bit chips it wants to, it still doesnt defeat the fact that there is no stable windows operating system thatll utilize a 64bit chip
windows xp and to my knowledge windows 2003 are still 32bit operating systems. so unless alienware wants to build a 64bit laptop running linux, ur gonna have to wait on that.
and a game machine is still only as strong as the os it runs. to access a processor directly, which would be required to develope a 64bit running on a 32bit os, you would have to write low level code (assembly anyone ? ) and even EA would be hard pressed to bring that kind of code stable and to the market in a timly fashion. its much easier for them to use direct x / opengl + prebuilt c runtimes to do it cost effectivly.
i would love a g5 powebook / ibook and probably would put my name down months in advance, but it still doesnt deny the fact that unless battery technology miracuasly jumps ahead 10 years or IBM figures something out to deal with the whole wattage thing / heat thing, i dont see it happening anytime soon as apple exec's have said.

Maybe we will see dual chip laptops with G4s in the meantime?

Somehow I have a feeling that IBM will mess up just like Moto did...........

Why? Please correct me if wrong. I heard IBM made the G3 in the iMac G3. Didn't they handle processor yeilds for it? If moto does go to 90nm we will see delays up to 2 years. IBM will have it done hopefully by January.
