im pretty sure they place a temporary hold at the time of order to make sure the money is there. then right before it ships they take the money. so what you saw last week was probably the temp hold to make sure there was enough money in the account.

Hey, I too experienced this, but I have not had my card charged for my 3G yet, only for my case. They took out the 40 bucks for the case, then like 3 days later it was back in the account. I called Apple and the guy told me that apparently they do a bunch of pre-approvals. Initially they will check the account with a $1 pre-approval. Then, and I'm not sure of what dictates the timeline on it, they authorize the amount on the card, but the Apple rep said that if the item has not been shipped within 3-5 days, then the charge will simply drop off and the money will go back into the account. At which point they will charge again when the item ships. He said that this was to avoid reserving money from people's accounts or cards, as they feel it is not fair if they are not immediately shipping the item. I was still somewhat confused after talking with him 😕 but he reassured me that all is well and that the items will be charged when they ship. And if through my explanation you are more confused than when you started.............then welcome to my world. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Awww, I just remebered I don't have my 3G, now I'm sad again. 🙁

That's exactly what they do. I pre-ordered a 3G 60GB iPad today to add to my 64GB Wifi iPad. I saw the charge in my account and promptly called them to find out what was going on. They said in the online chat I had that they will only charge once it ships and it was just a temporary hold to verify the funds. All is well.
