I have been trying to make some good stuff on that app but the fact that i have not drawn since college and that i can't find a decent stylus...

Anyways that is very good for a 10 min drawing i a hope to see more of your work as this thread progresses.

not from the iPad but done on the iPhone, with Sketches, not Sketchbook. still, it shows what you can do with a single finger.

Did this as a joke for a friend/co-worker.

We were spending the day training student workers and we bought them pizza for lunch. When Tee Jay (in the picture) sat down and took a slice, his nose immediately started bleeding.

We were all cracking up, telling him that he was so big that pizza got him excited to the point of nose bleeds. It was hilarious at the time.

Also to note: He's completely at peace with his size. We weren't laughing at him at all. It was all in good fun.

Just my fingers. Took me a few days. A lot of zooming in and back out again. I'll probably get a stylus when i get the ipad though. Hopefully they work well despite the spongy tip.

Did you basically color over a photograph? Or from scratch?

Did you basically color over a photograph? Or from scratch?

It wasnt 100% from scratch. I traced the outline of tebow from an actual picture. Then all coloring, shading, lighting and detail were done in multiple layers behind the original sketched drawing from scratch. It was too hard to sketch proportions correctly on the iphone since i was zoomed in to get detail.

I have always been horrible at art but, on a whim, stopped in at the Disney Animation Studios for one of their quick "classes". In this "class", we drew Woody from Toy Story. LMAO! I was thinking the exact same thing. I hope the parents of that 8yr old consider getting a digital tablet for some serious high-end work when Grade 9 rolls around. Seriously that is great concept work.

Bzz, you got the best hands down!

When you see art work like this you know the iPad was a smart idea. When you see work like that 8yr old on the previous page; you know schools MUST get this. Kids are the ones that should own the iPad to extend their world and put their imagination on digital ink. When they debut I'll consider this for my daughter. For now I'll purchase the app for her iPod and see what she does with that.

I can't wait to try the iPad, I live in Canada, so I haven't had the chance yet. I always find that even with my wacom painting just isn't the same as on canvas... until I got to try sketchbook pro on a friends iPhone. For whatever reason I really liked the direct finger thing, i find that pens and styluses just feel cheap, and never have that nice solid wood feel of a good paintbrush. If the iPad sketchbook pro is as good or better than the iPhone one it is a must buy for me. (I liked the iPhone sketchbook pro more than my copy of sketchbook pro for mac with my wacom)

Yeah from my blue sketch you can see that you can draw hairs much better because of how adobe ideas arcs the lines, another thing I like about adobe ideas is how thin clear every line you make is, but sketchbook pro is far superior in every other thing. I would like to import and export drawings from both.

Freaky bunny drawn with Adobe Ideas (sorry, not Sketchbook Pro - had yet to download at the time) - you can see that I'm playing with different things here, so this is sort of a mish-mash of things going on in one drawing, but it sure was fun to see that the Ipad could do exactly what I'd hoped it could do:

MacRumorUser, your work is great of the dog, do you a Flickr or PhotoBucket gallery?

Thankyou for the compliment.

I used an old flickr account to upload that picture. Only because brushes ipad app has an export to flickr option and it was the quickest way of getting the pic from the iPad to here with as little fuss :)

@Fireproof!

Thanks also. Having used all three I have to say I prefer Brushes at the moment. I find it easier to access the ink dropper and brushes. Just slightly more refined than either of the other two. Sketchbook is feature packed but it's a bit fiddly to access everything quickly, too many gestures to remember in order speed up your flow. However of course it's only on revision 1 and it will no doubt be updated and improve. Likewise Art Studio is a great little app, especially considering the price, but it's just not as refined as either of the other two.

Basically my preference is

1) brushes. Much like corel painter
2) sketchbook pro. Close call but I find it slightly less control intuitive.
3) art studio. Fantastic price but it's less refined. However updates could change that.

Fireproof!

Yep its €5.49 for standard & €4.99 for pro here too? I just downloaded the pro before they correct the pricing ;)

Much like how pixel mags 'Digital Arts' ipad magazine had 6 month subscription for €45.49 & 12 month for €21.49 ? I subscribed to the 12 month before they noticed their mistake too :D

I'll play around with layers pro later and post an image :)

MacRumorUser
Apr 24, 2010, 03:23 PM
Right Layers pro edition.

It has great blender tools that work well. Its layer support are limited to 5 layers but shouldn't be too much of a problem, but still not the best out there. Brush choice is only ok, brushes has better selection, and Sketchbook & Art Studio do better pencil strokes.

Online community gallery is great idea but there are flaws to the implementation of it.

It has very good ink dropper tool which is quick to use on the fly.

The software is buggy and it has crashed on me twice. Account settings for example allow you to upload an avatar, except it doesn't work. Online gallery doesn't allow the uploaded to remove the drawing or painting, so there are many people who have uploaded multiple versions of the same file. Export is great as it let's you email with .psd layer info intact, however it does not allow you to upload the photo to something like flickr which would be more handy than a built in gallery that only people with the app and an iPad can see.

Overall a good App. Better than Art Studio, not as good as Sketchbook or Art Studio. Will upload an image later as I can not do it from the iPad directly due to it's software limitation.

Amazing stuff, folks. Color me VERY impressed.

Question for those who have experience with most or all of these art creation apps - which do you think is best suited for no-talent, drawing-challenged hacks like myself? Most of all, I'd like to have fun being creative, and minimize the frustrations I might encounter as a no-talent hack trying to use a complicated interface, or one that will tend to expose my lack of ability :D

Awesome stuff!

Having a mobile art studio was one of my primary reasons for buying an iPad. I even sketched out my next Marvel cover concept on it (which was subsequently approved and I'm finishing on my MBP right now.) Making quick color studies on the go has never really been possible before without hauling around a watercolor set.

This is a great thread!!! So much talent on here!

I can't wait to get my iPad and one of the paint apps. I have sketchbook pro and brushes on my iPhone.

Once I get mine I'll start posting my stuff (which is horrible cause I have no artistic talent) but I have fun with it anyway :D

Any takes on which app is closest to Corel Painter? (I love painter and would love if they'd make an iPad app but I know that wont happen).

Read one of my earlier posts ;)

Brushes is the closest to Corel Paint.
Sketch Book Pro is most like, sketchbook pro funny enough.
Art Studio is alright but it's menu systems and general feel are appropriate for it's budget price tag. It lacks general refinement.
Layers Pro has the best 'blending' tools but has a few quirks & bugs that put it just behind brushes & sketchbook, but it's better than Art Studio.

The same thing happened to me. I think that i will be religious about saving. One thing I hate about iPhone os is that it just closes instead of freezing and letting whatever process work itself out. Not a big deal most of the time but when your deep into a game or working intently on a project it sucks.

I don't know, but this looks really interesting, I feel like I have seen this hanging in an art gallery before. Sometimes things just work and look off, but in a very good way, I can't explain it, the color, the single daisy...

I really like it, I have seen many paintings of daisies, I think this daisy looks happy by itself in the bleakness of that room, It doesn't need much, just water and some light.

Allegedly I receive my iPad today :) Cannot wait...

Anyhow I've been using Brushes for a year but own a few other apps for the iPod touch including the aforementioned Layers, Sketchbook and Art Studio. All are OK but don't hit me where Brushes has. I've already pre-booked all of the art apps I can find to sync and play with from minute one though, I'm only in the iPad for the doodle tools :)

One it surprises me no-ones mentioned because it's as pleasant to work with on an iTouch as any is Inspire which is well worth a look and I was sad to not see an iPad version.

Anyhow a couple of my iTouch pics below. You can catch more stuff on my blog (http://kercal.wibsite.com) and a page a day facebook comic I'm doing exclusively in Brushes here (http://www.facebook.com/search/?post_form_id=a7a0dc2cf27490385530dfbd14757bbc&q=wombat%20wambot&init=quick&ref=search_preload#!/pages/Wombat-Wambot/373739641256?ref=search&sid=556142640.4122960413..1).

Stylus doesn't help a huge deal, compared to say a cintiq or wacom tablet & pen.

I do mine by zooming in a lot, and then zooming out to see the overall look, then zooming back in (200-400%) to do the fine line or any detail.

I bought a cheap stylus today but it is rubbish, the tip is like a rubber so it just judders over the screen if you try to swipe.

Been looking at a Pogo Sketch, but would like to see what is working for others.

Cheers. :)

I use a Pogo Sketch, and from my research here before purchasing it, it seems that a great many folks use and like the Pogo Sketch as well.

Yep pogo sketch here too. Was thinking of getting the htc capacative stylus.

I actually use just my fingers.

I've considered picking up a Pogo, but I'm actually feeling really comfortable with just using my fingers to paint/draw and having the ability to pinch or select my tools and just right back into drawing.

I like the pogo sketch stylus but it is starting to wear out already. The foam tip just keeps on getting flatter with every use.

Here's my latest one, a portrait of my cat Smokie. This was done on an iPad using the ArtStudio App.

I really had a hard time trying to figure out how to paint the fur, but am more than happy with the results.

Surprisingly, the ear was probably the one of the most difficult part since it is so plain looking at first site.

I really am proud of this painting and think it's true to life!

It's sad, this thread isn't getting the response it used to since they moved it to the app section... :(

Anyways, I put together a screen showing how Smokie was done.

Tried the pogo sketch and found that the foam tip wore down and scratched my screen protector. I feel as though I have to really push to get it to be recognized by the iPad. Not sure I like that.

Not a great drawing but I guess that's because I'm not a super great artist. :o

Thank you :)

I got frustrated at having no artistic talent so I decided to make myself learn to draw and even though I can only do simple stuff, and its still not good, its progressing which is encouraging :)

I honestly think most people can draw, its just that in school (U.S. anyway) there are virtually no art classes. I work with a lot of Europeans and every one of them can draw awesomely so I'm thinking its not something you're born with, but just like everything else it can be learned from practice.

Anyway I'm trying to do an apple now but its not coming out so hot haha.

Don't feel too disheartened. I still come back everyday to check on this thread, but it does get tiresome. BTW, great work on your paintings, I love the apple and the starfish!

Something I wanted to pass on to you (or anyone else interested) are the iPad Art Groups on Flickr. I've been going there more and they are great ways to view what other people are doing, get tips on how things were done and join groups to post your own work. The people I've encountered are really friendly and I just feel like my stuff is more visible.

Some groups I belong to that you can check out are:

http://www.flickr.com/groups/ipadpaintings/

http://www.flickr.com/groups/ipadcreative/

http://www.flickr.com/groups/artstudioimages/

Also, if your preference is Brushes or Sketchbook Pro, there are specific groups for those also. My stuff is done in ArtStudio so follow that group more.

Hope to see you there!

Ah, see you are already on Flickr, added you as a friend! :)
