Warrantee on imported Powerbook?

I am going to Thailand end of the year and was thinking of getting a powerbook there, the reason being that I will get it much cheaper there than here is SA. I was however told by a few local mac users that if I import a Apple product into South Africa I will loose any form of warrantee. Is this true?? Is this just a local thing or a Apple thing?
 
I believe that portables have an international warranty. However, you should check with Apple SA, just to make sure that they have the same rules.
