I got my 12" powerbook from Ebay today, I was just checking it out, very cool. I left something installing, and when I came back the screen was black, pressed a key - nothing. Reboot - nothing

The screen came on when the lid was almost closed, but when i opened it up the screen turned off.

Now you can imagine i was pretty annoyed. I phoned applecare and they agreed to fix it under the warranty :) even though I did not have the reciept or know when it was orionally purchased. Dropped it off at my local shop today, and should have it back in 10 days.

Also turns out it has an 80GB HD when I was expecting 40GB :D

you probably ran out of battery, and it takes few minutes to charge it to the point it allows to boot the computer. just recharge it and try again.

no, the computer was coming on just not the backlight. battery was full, and plugged in.

are you sure you didn't accidentally press the function keys which can turn off the screen?

if it's broken, you should contact the seller and state that the computer was dead on arrival.

sounds like a screen connector's loose. still under warranty?

I just want to add that he should check to see if he has a screen saver on.
If you have a password on the screen saver and you just try and fire-up the screen it "blinks" then goes black.
