i.m wondering if it is possible to make mac os X dispaly the full name of folders on the desktop instead of 'and this really long name...somethi' is there any way to do this? This annoys the crap out of me!

There may be a haxie somewhere to change that setting, but I've never seen one and it's not in the popular TinkerTool.

I could imagine that getting really ugly depending on the length of your filenames, but good luck finding something. Have you tried searching on VersionTracker.com yet?
 
Shorten your file names? I really don't know with this one...You have me stumped. I will do some research.
