Starting up from keyboard command

Is there any keyboard shortcut to startup a Mac that is off (G4 or G3 tower)?

I haven't found one at apple.com, or anywhere else for that matter...
 
Old Apple keyboards (G3 iMac days.. Maybe earlier than that too) had power buttons on the keyboard, but since those were removed I don't know of anyway to boot up via keyboard.
 
What good times those were, being able to start a computer by the press of a button on the keyboard. I used to use an old all-in-one PowerPC (not sure which version) and when I started using it, I could not figure out how to start it up. I probably spent half and hour looking over the machine for a power button. It wasn't until I actually looked at the manual did I discover how to start the computer. I really wish Apple still put this option on their machines.
 
Apple have had power-on buttons on the keyboards from Mac IIsi (excluding models based on the centris 605 case) untill Sawtooth (maybe later models also GBE? DA?). Why they stopped i don't know, but its stupid...

I broke the keyboard which came with my sawtooth a few years ago, and the new keyboard didn't have power-on switch on the keyboard!!!
I had to crawl under the desk to turn it off!!
Now i have it on the desk, but then i heard the fans running!!!

So why remove something that was so convenient???
I think its one of the most stpid things apple have done since the puck-ouck-mouse...
 
YES the old keyboards with the power button on them STILL work, even on my G5.

I don't use them because they're usually not very PC friendly, and I have a KVM for this workstation.

[Edit: I'm contemplating a short switch for my G5 right now that I can mount on my desk.]

I think that you mean the Flower Power iMac! 😱 gag! In your sig I notice... do you have one of the original Macintosh Portables (the Luggable)?

I too remember getting upset at the Performas at the high-school because I couldn't figure out how to turn them on. Felt very sheepish and stupid when I was shown how by my older brother.

I know that F12 does the Eject function on most third-party keyboards. Don't know about the Power Button, but maybe it can be programmed.

I don't think so... unless there's some sort of open firmware command to set it (doubtful)

Yeah I have a STILL WORKING backlit portable!!!
It has 4 mb ram and two floppy drives. (The orig hd is dead, and i replaced it with a floppydrive!) It runs OS 6.0.7 like a champ! The screen is also very good and clear on the backlit ones 🙂.

And yeah you have to be two to lift it...

Well, with the Apple Cinema Displays, all you do is touch the power button on the display to turn on the computer... my guess is thats why they removed it from the keyboard, otherwise people with Cinema Displays, PowerMacs, and a keyboard would have 3 different ways to turn on their computer, lol. 😛

And I remember being the smart one in my old old school when we got those iMacs, watching all the kids look for a way to turn on their computer 😀 my favorate one being when I saw a kid staring at the front part (where the CD Drive is) and poking to the left and right of it for 5mins... now thats just sad.

Also, when my school received a bunch of iMac G4's, I couldnt find the Power Button right away. Why did that one have to be in such a weird place? since with the iMac G4's, they included the Apple Keyboard with the USB ports on the sides which didnt have a power button on it. You think they would put it on the front or something... i dunno
 
Yes, the Apple Displays have a power button that can turn the computer on, but, as you said, on the iMac, and eMacs also, there's no button on the display (the eMac I have at home makes me have to reach all the way on the side and the back of it to turn it on)...
