Just ordered Intel X25-M 160GB, how do I find out if it has the latest firmware v1.5 from Dec 8, 2009. And is the Solid State Drive Toolbox v1.3 from Mar 22, 1010 worth downloading?

Intel's download/support page doesn't tell you how to know if your SSD has the latest firmware or not.

Just go ahead and run the firmware update tool. If it is up to date it will tell you.

The Toolbox is Windows only.

To check the Firmware Version just run the installer.

The firmware version on the drive will be printed on the label.

Ok thanks everybody . . . I'll check the label to see if it's v1.5, if not I'll run the firmware installer which I haven't downloaded yet.

Is it better to format my SSD first then install firmware v1.5, or install v1.5 first then format? Or perhaps it doesn't matter. It's a brand new SSD with no data, so might as well do it right, the best way since it's not inconvenient.

Interesting I didn't know that.

I know when I purchased one a few months ago it was not updated.

Hmm... Where? I don't see it on X25-M 80GB drive.

I don't think it matters. I updated firmware first.

It's just left of the Intel logo at the top.

The equally easy way is just to look at the drive in System Profiler, it'll list the firmware revision there.
