Good news on the GPU3 front (http://folding.typepad.com/news/2010/04/prepping-for-the-gpu3-rolling-new-client-and-nvidia-fah-gpu-clients-will-need-cuda-22-or-later.html) it's getting closer now.

I thought I would start a thread on news about Folding like the above...

No mention of Mac support yet... Patience patience. But these NVidia GT4XX look like they will be monsters at Folding.

Still waiting on bigadv to move to a3 core though...

well that is good news. it seems GPU3 will be out very soon

Got an a3 unit but it says bigadv in the Wudget...

4 mins time frame, doesn't look like a bigadv...

Core 2.21 is also ready now.

Update: one a3 bigadv has been released, it is project 2684. I did not get it though and got assigned a 6012 which is a regular a3, never got one before...

Update 2: one crashed at 2%, the other one at 10%, then I got an a2 bigadv... Go figure.

Stanford doesn't seem to have solved the early crashing problem yet that 2.21 was supposed to fix.

So does this mean that if I get a ATI graphics card, it will fold great?

No, these are CPU clients.

The ATI vs Nvidia PPD difference is not going away anytime soon, something where the architecture of Nvidia cards better suited to Folding.

What we are waiting for however is a GPU client for Mac/Linux.

Yes, but at least maybe they will have time to start work on mac/linux versions soon, I hope...

It looks like a3 bigadv produce 20-30% less PPD...

No idea of points yet, but my completion time went from 2 days 22 hours to 3 days 14 hours. Before I was getting 51k points per unit. Oh and it is using core 2.22 for these a3 bigadv.

Somehow though according to the table, it should yield the same 16.5k PPD. My machine is a 8 cores with no PPD hit? It looks like the one getting hit by 20-30% less PPD are 4 cores plus 4 virtual.

We will know for sure in two days.

SciFrog
Jun 7, 2010, 05:32 PM
Yup, 58.5k points with the bonus so more than the a2 units, very small PPD loss in the end, unlike the virtual cores... And this a3 unit survived a restart! Great update!

SciFrog

Some a3 servers are down, uploads are not working... Also the a3 now serves a 6701 unit, quite a slow one...

Core a3 2.22 is out, it is somewhat faster than 2.21. It doesn't seem to update by itself yet, so once a unit is finished, you need to manually delete the core to get the new one.

Medical research. Many people felt SETI was fun but a bit useless. Please refer to their site for more info:

i've been out of the loop for awhile now, and it seems a lot of things have changed. care to fill me on it? before i was running bigadv units in a linux VM inside windows.

No more LINUX bigadv because there is a bug. But runs fine on Mac OS X, and Windows now too I think.

Vijay would like us to test our rigs for accuracy (http://folding.typepad.com/news/2010/08/memtestcl-a-gpu-memory-tester-for-opencl-supports-ati-and-nvidia-gpus.html). I will probably test mine just so I know that I'm sending them good data.

It will take us about 40 days to pass Portugal@folding to put us back in 58th place for a while. In 3 to 4 months we will be overtaken again this time by Russia then by p2p-community and awachs shortly after that which will put us at 61st place around the end of the year :( We are doing better than we were though :)

yeah something like that if we keep the current pace, which will be hard to do.
