A family freind has bought her kid 2 ipod classics, the first one broke and the now so did the replacement. Being a PC nerd they were given to me to attempt a repair as the warranties have expired (both are black 80GB classics) but I have never worked with an iPod (I have only owned a Touch).

iPod #1- I turn it on and only an Apple logo appears and then internal clicking, then a red X and a url to contact Apple. I am assuming this iPod has had a drive failure, hence the clicking , and is toast.

iPod #2- Was not synching with the kids PC but I just synched it with my Mac and restored it to factory settings and it appears to work fine now. So thats one down (I actually just did this while typing, yay!)

One down, one to go

yeah, clicking hard disk = bad. You can possibly replace the HDD with a new one, but an 80GB one is probably going to be around $100. A 120GB classic refurbed is $190.

You might also check ebay for a classic that's dead, but something other than a HDD problem. You could rob the parts from one to fix the other.

Good luck!
