View Full Version : PowerMac G5 getting noisier?

Maybe it's just my imagination, but my 3 week old 2.0GHz Rev. B PowerMac G5 seems to have recently gotten a little bit noisier since when I first got it (although it is still remarkably quiet).

It seems that the fans are operating at around the same speed, just not as "smoothly" perhaps.

Is this common? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

:)

Dusty enviroment? it happens, 3 weeks seem a little soon unless you smoke have pets etc. i have found out that cleaning those fans every 6 months or so in my i mean my wife's quicksilver helped to make it less noisy. congrats on the new machine!

Well, I don't smoke, have any pets, or operate in a dusty environment. Again, all I can say is that doesn't sound as smooth as it used to - almost like when a tiny leaf gets stuck in a cars vent (although definately not as extreme).

Pop it open and give it a good visual going over around and near all fans. perhaps one isnt balanced or molded right or it may be normal and it is your imagination. :p

Also, alexf - sometimes computer fans collect dust, which can cause them to not perform as expected, making your computer louder. Cleaning them up in addition to inspecting them will surely make them better.

What's the best way to clean the fans?

IMO, compressed air.

IMO, compressed air.

OK, thanks to all for the advice.

One reason that I posted, however, is that I thought I read another post awhile back (or maybe even more than one) stating that their G5 was silent on arrival but then became noisier.

Just curious as to whether this is a common issue.

Regarding cleaning the inside of the G5 I came across this:

He claims that nothing violates the warranty (and is probably right) but it still seems a little scary to me...

Has anyone tried this?
