OK, when most people think of Swedish pop, they probably think of:
1) Abba
2)Roxette
3) Ace of Base (I think)
Now in 2004, however, there is a new batch of Swedish pop which is quite good, although it has yet to penetrate the US market.
With that in mind, I would like to make some recommendations:
1)Tribeca
2)Club 8
3)Radio Dept.
They are all on the same label, Labrador. Here is a link to their listening page:
http://www.labrador.se/sounds.php3
To give some context to what these bands might be like (although they are all different), here is are examples of my music tastes:
Ladytron
Interpol
The Faint
Lali Puna
Mum
Notwist
Ms John Soda
Radiohead
Modest mouse
Postal Service
Cinematic Orchestra
Blonde Redhead
Enon
Album Leaf
Boards of Canada
My bloody Valentine
Broadcast
Mogwai
Explosions in the Sky (friends)
Stereolab
to name a few...I would encourage looking into most of them, if you have not heard them previously. Many are on the Morr Music label from Berlin. Here is a link:
http://www.morrmusic.com/
You can listen to pretty much anything they have put out...
So, I don't know if my tastes are too obscure for MacRumors, but I thought I'd share, and perhaps get some recommendations back in return.
Sadly, very few of these bands are available via ITMS. Still, I hope this post opens up some musical horizons for some...
FWIW...

Lerche is from Norway.
Btw, best Swedish rock/pop band is IMHO Kent
If you like rock listen to the Hives (also from sweden)
And if you want to get the best from Norway, listen to Motorpsycho (yeah the name DOES NOT reflect their kind of music).
They have made much diffentent music.
Highlights would be the albums, Let them eat cake, Blizzard, Thrust Us and Phanerothyme.

Thanks for the tips cluthz,
it doesn't seem like the motorpsychos have released anything lately...
oh, speaking of Swedish bands (as per original post), I forgot to mention Caesars...they're pretty good too.

I thought the Cardigans were norway, but yeah, they're awesome. whatever, let's just go with scandinavian bands, sans iceland.

iGav...I was going to mention the Cardigans, but they are not one of my faves (although neither are Abba, roxette etc)...are they still releasing music?
To everyone, did any of you check out Labrador and the audio samples of the bands I recommended?
I find Tribeca particularily good, and an excellent band to be mentioned for PseudoBrit's "music to get in the mood " thread (perhaps that will pique some interest)
also still holding out for recommendations...

Duff-Man says....I think my current fave swedish artist would be Stina Nordenstam (http://www.seekyoudanger.com/) - very unusual voice, maybe like a much more subtle Bjork is the best description I can think of at the moment....oh yeah!

Sounds interesting, but I cannot find any audio clip(s). I went to the link provided, plus V2 scandinavia...it seems the album isn't out for another couple weeks. How do you know of her Duff-man? This seems like her first release that isn't a promo...
I will keep an ear out...

I will keep an ear out...Duff-Man says...she has had 5 previous albums out, all except one of them released here in Canada. I don't know why they don't seem to be mentioned in the "albums" section of her website now - they were still there a couple weeks ago before they redesigned the site for the new album release. (Just looked again - if you go into the "store section of the site and click on "audio" you see a listing of the albums - but still no samples unfortunately) I picked up one of her cd's years ago when I saw it in a used cd store - the cover caught my eye and when I read the credits I saw that Jon Hassell played on it so I took a chance and was rewarded. Her last release "This Is Stina Nordenstam" was very very good I thought. She had one of her songs - "Little Star" appear in some movie (was it Romeo and Juliet?) and that generated a bit of interest in her stuff in north america but since she is a bit odd sounding and does not play concerts it never really went much further than ultra-cult status here.....oh yeah!

My Swedish friend once let me listen to her Bob Hünd CD, and I thought it wasn't bad. ;)
The Hives are good. I know they're just "noise" to many, and I don't actually disagree with that statement. However, their albums are fun if all you're looking for is fast rock at deafening volumes. Music to bounce around the room to. Good for jogging to as well, as the pace is quite nice. :)
Otherwise, Norwegian music is quite good, particularly Röyksopp. Gus Gus is also quite good, but as (real) dance music isn't my cup of tea, I don't listen to them often.
Aren't Interpol from Sweden as well, or was that International Noise Conspiracy I'm thinking of?

Bob Hund is great!
Bob Hund actually means "Bob the dog.."
Motorpsycho has released atleast 3 or 4 albums since 2000.
Think the latest release is "It's a love cult" or "In the fishtank", which is kind of a strange album.

Yeah, I thought Interpol could be from NYC. I must be thinking of Int'l Noise Conspiracy, then.

Yeah, my Swedish friend has told me this. It used to be her favourite band, so whenever I refer to Bob Hund, I say "Bob Dog" instead.
And as you're from Bergen, Norway, I'll just mention that the greatest acoustic guitar duo, Kings of Convenience, come from Bergen, or at least that's where their studio is. And Erlend Ĝye, who was the voice on 'Remind Me' and 'Poor Leno' on the Roysopp album, is a part of KofC, and he does dance music as well. He was also responsible for the recent DJ Kicks 4, which is a nice honour. I love how it's all interconnected. ;)

Yeah, King of Convenienc and Sondre Lerche is from Bergen, Norway. Even if Bergen is a small city (about 200.000) we have many bands and musicians here. Many refers Bergen as the musical capital of Norway.
