too many to name or count...

when i was a wee lad in the 70's a friend of my brothers got me a job ushering every concert that came thru dallas/fort worth. this, in turn, led to backstage security jobs which led to basically just hanging out backstage...

some highlites:

led zepplin 1977
the who
the tubes( first tour...amazing show)
cat stevens( magikat tour..also amazing)
lynrd skynrd ( hung out with the guys...drunk but nice)
elvis presley( worked 2 shows..very surreal )
rolling stones(small club tour of '78 )
uriah heep( bassist electrocuted onstage)
queen ( nice guys except freddie was, well freddie...)
aerosmith( back in their chemically altered days...the show sucked)
stevie ray vaughn( twice a month he played a dive i shot pool at)
eric johnson ( still have his electromagnets bootlegs)

other shows:
zz top, loggins and messina, nazareth, thin lizzy, foghat, dave mason, yes , head east, black oak arkansas, journey, wings, allman brothers band, deep purple, level 42, midnight oil, adrian belew and the bears, chris isaak and silvertone, gary myrick and the figures, mel torme with george shearing, INXS, grace jones, david wilcox, HEM, lalo shifrin, riders in the sky, NRBQ, AC/DC, joe cocker, ...hmmm, too many i'm forgetting

Too many to remember.

Highlights were:
Katscan and Sulpher at the Carnival of souls fetish party
Fear factory's Obsolete tour
Ministry on the Animosity tour
They Might Be Giants on the Mink Car tour
Funker Vogt and Winterkaelte a the Infest festival, 2001
Black Sabbath's reunion tour many moons ago, System of a Down were good there too...

And the highlight was Skinny Puppy on the Greater wrong of the right tour, a couple of months back.

Of note, Megadeth sucked balls, as did A Perfect circle.

Ok dude, you win! Hands down!

I've seen the Police twice and Sting twice. The first Police tour I stood about 20 feet from Sting, it was awesome. Van Halen a couple of times. Prince's Purple Rain tour was pretty entertaining. Indigo Girls acoustic show was great. Mojo Nixon was a runaround blast! Ray Charles definitely a highlight. First concert was Commodores, then Peter Frampton came the same year - it was the tour of his success. The Smithereens are a favorite of me and the wife, seen them three times and met them twice. hmmm I'm sure I'll think of more....oh yeah REM, it was ok only a stadium tour where the yuppies wanted us to sit down instead of dancing.

Here's a few more I forgot about... 10,000 Maniacs - great stuff, great singer
Dave Matthews Band, good show - pure sound

Seen way too many to count but the number one highlight has to have been the Smashing Pumpkins' final show December 2, 2000 at the Metro in Chicago. 4 hours long, great set, and of course I was in the front row right in front of James Iha.

The guy, (from Tool, the name, I forget... meh) was in A Perfect Circle, which was one of the worst gigs I've ever seen. Out-of-sync, unimaginative crap. He jerked off on stage, for ******'s sake...

Blue Velvet

Best concerts I've seen:

Kraftwerk – The Mix tour
Stanley Clarke (solo - accoustic & electric)
Laurie Anderson
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense Tour

Want to see Keith Jarrett solo...

His first name is Maynard...can't remember the last name. Never saw a perfect circle but if you are a fan of tool i promise you will not be let down. Extremely tight performance. Simply jaw dropping. I saw them in Hershey, PA in the arena. Imagine that. Tool in Chocolate Town USA. I was pissed though because the ticket collectors took the entire ticket..not even leaving me the stub (which I collect). Something to do with security and sneaking in.

I'll be seeing John Scofield again in November near L.A. with his jazz band and the Christian McBride Band. Should be a good time. I saw The Who on the last reunion tour about 3 or 4 weeks after Entwhistle passed away. Pino Palladino did nicely holding down the bottom end however.

I've seen the Grateful Dead about 15 times and some various side projects of the band members.

Maynard James Keenan, that's the monkey. Dirty little bastard.

I'm so, uber jealous of Blue Velvet and his Krafterk tour exploit... I wanted to go see the most recent one (May this year), but the only tix left were for the Mitternacht konzert, and afterward I'd not have been able to get home. :( Hearing that band when I was but a wee boy changed my whole perspective on life; now if anyone says they went to see Alice in Chains, I'll have to cry!

i'll provide the tissues and cry with you.

has anyone seen velvet revolver? i'm curious to hear some opinions on GnR meets Scott Weiland. i've heard a few good things about the album but a little scared to buy it in case it's a waste of money.

did the perfect circle shows have weird stage antics like the tool show does? freaks dangling upside down for hours on end just spinning...other weirdness too.

Nah. Just crappy music & masturbation :)

TBH, most of the shows I've seen have been pretty bland in the theatrics sense - exceptions being Welle: Erdball (one I should have put on the main list, since they were absolutelyfanbloodytastic), and Skinny Puppy.

i don't go to concerts for theatrics..that's what broadway is for, but this tool stuff was bizarre and worth mentioning. i've never seen skinny puppy, not really into them. to each his own :) some other shows i've seen...

black crowes, oasis (ugh), black crowes w/ oasis (great time), HORDE Tour w/ Blues Traveller, Allmans, Ziggy Marley and G-Love, Lollapalooza ('95ish?) w/ the Pumpkins, P-Funk, Beasties, Tribe Called Quest and others, Widespread Panic, .moe, Les Claypool and the Frog Brigade, Karl Denson, and my first concert ever.....

Michael Jackson on the Victory Tour with all his brothers at Veteran's Stadium in Philly...I was maybe 10 yrs old. My parents took me. Thank god I was never introduced to him...I might be in the news... ;)

how many gigs??... god only knows 40-50 ish, probably more deffo quite a few though.

best one?? well that would be PWEI at Leeds T&C in September 1994. ;) PWEI monstered all comers! ;)

although the late night/very am freestyle jam by members of Afro Celt Soundsystem up in the Green Field at Glastonbury in 1999 pushes it close... :)

biggest disappointment?? probably NIN... I was expecting something raw, ******'d up... they didn't deliver the goods.

Can't begin to guess how many shows, maybe 125-150?

Most recent show - Marilyn Manson at 930 Club in DC, which was the 2nd time on this tour, 3rd overall - Great Stageshow! an evil genius.

First Ever Concert - Wings Over America at the Cap Centre, mid-70's, must have been 14 or so.

In Between - Mike Oldfield (Tower in Philly - best concert I ever saw), XTC, Dream Theater, Kings' X, Galactic Cowboys, Gentle Giant, Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, ZZ Top, Peter Gabriel, Prince, Marillion, Fish, NIN, Ozric Tentacles, Robert Fripp, Dixie Dregs, Gong, Caravan, Metallica, Queensryche, Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Police, Tears For Fears, Doobie Brothers, Heart, Evanescence, Cold, Echolyn (great indie Philly band- prolly saw 'em 15 times), Porcupine Tree (incredible band!), Mastermind, Discipline, Anglegaard, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, Todd Rundgren, Pierre Moerlen, Carl Filipiak (unknown jazz guitar great), Oingo Boingo, Crack The Sky, godhead, Chicago, Beach Boys....

Duff-Man says...countless - I've been going to concerts since about '73, from big arena/stadium shows to tiny clubs. Saw the Police, in a tiny club in Toronto...the original XTC of the Go2 tour in '79 was great...Nick Cave many times - always fantastic....Neil Young lots of times - the Garage tour with Crazy Horse in '86 was my fave - saw 4 shows on that tour....Emerson, Lake & Palmer at the Cobo Hall in Detroit in '77 with full orchestra - could be the loudest show I have been to, but crystal clear sound...others like Killing Joke, Stranglers, ZZ Top, Big Country, Kinks, Wire, Sleater-Kinney, Dead Can Dance, Lisa Gerrard, Lori Carson, Tori Amos, King Crimson, Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, Tom Verlaine, Sun Ra, Peter Hammill, Kristin Hersh, John Cale, Lou Reed, Dirty Three, the Cure ('81 show was great), Cowboy Junkies, Pere Ubu, Tangerine Dream, Richard Hell & the Voidoids...etc etc etc etc.....but now it has been a while since I have been out a show - last one was last october - Heather Nova in Zurich (good show!)....oh yeah!

1.) Beck on his "unplugged" small venue tour. Highlight: he had a kid toy guitar that he amplified through all of his sophisticated sound equipment and it kept rapping "one-man-band" along with all the other cool noises it was making and Beck made it sound like the best song in the world.

2.) Beck & The Flaming Lips. Highlight: their "robot-rock" version of "Mixed Bizness" - I'm sure you can imagine!

3.) Jimmie Vaughan at Antone's. Lou Ann Barton was on hand for some awesome blues singing and ZZ Top's guitarist Billy showed up and laid down the jam.

4.) Willie Nelson in a small venue in Dallas. His harmonica player stole the show for me, but standing 15 feet from the band while they played was stellar.

5.) Future: I can't wait to see Wilco live in October, it's gonna be GREAT!

Bill Bruford is freakin' awesome! I left him off my list, but he had several albums out in the 80's which were great proggy jazz stuff. Saw his band at Painters Mill in Reisterstown, Md. That was a great place to see a show...just a few thousand seats, in the round, revolving stage...cool place.

Way too many shows to count by now. Hundreds, perhaps even thousands of sets seen by bands of all shapes, sizes, sounds, haircuts, &c...

First concert was a biggie: the US Festival in 1983. Saw everybody from The Clash to Ozzy to Van Halen to U2. More than my 12 year-old mind could take.

Highlights include:

- U2 at said US Festival. Bono running around with the white flag.
- Clan of Xymox. Obscure gothy band on 4AD, amazing live band in the late 80s. Perfect fusion of guitars and electronics.
- 2nd row tickets for Sting back in 1988.
- Steel Pole Bath Tub, Rodan, The Jesus Lizard, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion were among the 90's most consistently great live bands.
- Kraftwerk's 1998 and 2004 tours. They still lead the pack.
- Radiohead, anytime, anywhere.
- Nick Cave, ditto.

Wow! I feel just a bit outdone... I've only been to one concert! It was in Clark, MI, and John Mayer was playing. Maroon 5 opened, and they weren't bad, but everybody was pretty stoked when John took the stage. I've been a big fan of his for years, and so it was cool to go there (it was just this summer) and hear some new stuff. I hope I get another chance to see him, it was a great experience! :D

Cool. Is Burton Cummings going to be there? I love his voice.
Also, anyone else from Red Rider besides Cochrane? Man, that was one under-appreciated band, at least here in the States. All anyone around here knows of Cochrane is that "Life is a Highway" tune. Neruda is still one of my favorite albums...Power, Lunatic Fringe, Can't Turn Back...great stuff.

I went to Verizon Ladies First Tour in April.
Beyonce oversang way too much, but was a great visual show; Missy Elliot had too much back up and wasn't given enough time or enough audio quality. Rap isn;t the best live.

But the real reason I went there was Alicia Keys. I heard her live shows are stunning. And I was blown away as she stepped down the stairs in her purple corset and cane, belting out "Karma". The way she pulled off with such intensity and passion (soung and looking incredibly great) was just amazing.
She brought out Raphael Saadiq to play with her on "Diary", and was very personal, talking to the crowd. She had only one costume change (Missy didn't have enough time; Beyonce changed almost every song), which was for "You Don't Know My Name". Everybody sang along to everyline; she got the most out of the crowd.

An amazing preformer.

I haven't really been to a concert for a while....
I did the whole teen thing about 15 years ago, saw new kids on the block several times, & the rest of the teen scene at the time, take that, salt n' pepa, Kylie.
Seen Michael Jackson several times, the first time was the best & he is an amazing performer.
Blur at the mile end stadium (1995), was in the front row middle.
Glastonbury festival, saw the likes of Johnny cash, lemonheads, pulp, oasis, Bjork,
My next concert is in a couple of weeks time & I'm going to see Will Young.

Saw them play on Parliament Hill on Canada Day, 2003. They were pretty good. I was a little surprised they would play American Woman at federally sponser and endorsed event, but they did, and everyone loved it.

Btw, where in 'Toba are you? I grew up in Brandon.

In terms of Manitoba bands, Weakerthans can put on a pretty solid show. Saw them at Bluesfest in July this year. They played a longer encore than concert, and headed it up with a well received rendition of 'One Great City'.

I just saw John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette and Larry Goldings play at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in Cerritos, CA (near Long Beach) this past saturday. All I can say is HOLY *****! What a performance. I've seen Scofield twice before with his band in Reno, NV and Harrisburg, PA (more along the lines of fusion/groove stuff) and was amazed. Put him with Jack DeJohnette on drums...my oh my, what a drummer!!!! The opener was Christian McBride Band (go Philly!) and they absolutely kicked ass. They closed the set with Boogie-Woogie Waltz of Weather Report fame and blew the roof off the sucker!

The Cerritos Center is absolutely beautiful inside, too.

I really want to go to the current Queen concert tour. But I have have heard many conflicting comments.

Then there are the issues that venues like the Verizon Center and the such in the DC area were so much more than going to the venues in Pittsburgh and other cities.

I truly hate (I know that is a string emotion), when concert promoters "rip-off" based on perceived demographics. Not all of us in the DC area are in the 6 figure income bracket.

I was looking into going to the Queen tour. I've heard from multiple people that it was fairly disappointing. I still wished I went though.

That is what I am hearing too.

Wish food poisoning did not spoil my London visit this past February. I really wanted to see the "We Will Rock You" show.

To be honest it is hard for Queen to go on without Freddy Mercury. His voice is hard to match IMO.

I still lament that I did not pay the price to see Queen here at the Verizon Center. But I am looking at lower cost options that I can get to.

I went to a Barenaked Lady's Concert.
With my father.
When I was eight.

:)

I would have gone to more, but my favorite music genre is Indie and they don't have many Indie concerts around where I live.

Damn another concert that I would like to go to.

I did go to what I think was the last Halloween concert by the Blues Travelers at the 9:30 Club.

I so love Barenaked Ladies.

has anyone seen velvet revolver? i'm curious to hear some opinions on GnR meets Scott Weiland. i've heard a few good things about the album but a little scared to buy it in case it's a waste of money.

.

WOW !!! This threads an oldie but a goodie-;-)... I understand your concerns about Velvet Revolver- yah just never know if Weiland's gonna make it to the show...lol... But, if you get a chance to see them- DO IT... After going to pretty much every concert you can imagine well into my late 20's there really aren't too many bands left that I am actually still interested in going to see anymore- mostly because I've turned into an old man -lol... But VR is a show I never miss when they come around... My wife laughs at me because she knows I don't really get the urge to go to concerts anymore, and also because the only reason I even saw VR live was because she thinks they're sexy, so I surprised her with some tickets one night and we were both blown away...

I do like to go see live shows, but once is enough for me with most bands, but there's something about the raw, simple yet powerful style of VR live that really appeals to me.. Just pure rock-n-roll without all of the theatrics... The way it was intended to be, imho...

1. :) I'm not really a concert person. I mean £60 to see the Chilli Peppers? No effin way! At least not going off how bad they sing live. I mean some guy from Pop Idol or something similar is playing in Manchester at £70 a ticket!

I'd go to more. But there are better things, to me at least, to spend my money on.

edit: The concert was Unicef charity thing in Manchester. Wheatus, Catatonia and several others played. about 7 years ago now! was going out with this girl at the time, had our first kiss to "dancing in the moonlight" by that fuzzy haired singer *name escapes me*.

Whilst we're in the business of resurrecting old threads...

Saw Zep in the mud at Knebworth.... last gig they ever played I think.

Saw Robert Plant many many times.

Saw Pink Floyd on DSotM and WYWH, but also saw the final ever real Floyd gig (Waters in his own continuum at that point) Earls Court The Wall.

Seen Rush on every tour since a Hemispheres (1978ish) saw them twice last year on the 30th anniversary tour (how old do I feel?)

Saw U2 on the War tour with Bon Jovi supporting (surreal),

Best gig: Leonard Cohen at the Royal Albert Hall, waltzing with my soon-to-be wife in the isle to "This Waltz"...

Too many others to mention really, played with and recorded a lot of good people too.

BTW Pino Palladino could only dream of being the bass player that the Ox was.... RIP.

Saw Satriani, Vai and Kenny Wayne Shepard (didn't really care for him) together, that was my first concert. Dream Theater, Carlos Santana, James Taylor with the Dixie Chicks, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, The Who, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Alison Krauss and Union Station (three times), Keith Urban (meh...got dragged to that), Journey (not the same without Steve Perry though), Brian Setzer Orchestra and Bob Dylan, I'm sure I'm missing something.

Artists I am determined to see at some point: Mark Knopfler, Patty Griffin, Elvis Costello

My all time favorite concert was Bon Jovi about 2 summers ago.

It was at Giants Stadium

They played an incredible set list, and they always give such a kick ass performance.

65,000 people.

And it was a huge huge huge thunderstorm. Everyone was soaked. The best part was, no one moved. Everyone stayed in their seats. The band, as Jon Bon Jovi said it "couldnt see ****"

Really drenched guys, my shoes took 5 days to dry.

And another quote from Jon "Now I know what it feels like to take a shower with 65,000 people"

i was a huge fan of hard rock embellished with indulgent lead guitar solos/heroes, starting with skynard, led zep, and kiss up until its apparent near death when grunge (which i also like) kicked hard rockers like guns and roses, poison, motley crue, whitesnake, white lion, def leppard, mr big, and many others off the turf of large stadiums

but one band from that genre of "loud music" not related to seattle, or their disciples, stayed stadium arena worthy, and that has been bon jovi...popish metal, guitar solos, and screaming girls wearing spandex seemed to be out of date for the last 15 years but bon jovi seemed keep enough of that vintage heavy metal fanbase and keep rich and popular...the reuniting of motley crue, poison, and other pre grunge hard rock and heavy metal bands is more of a musical sideshow while bon jovi remains the one hard rock/heavy metal/pop metal/"fill in the blank" hair band that has remained near the top of the charts

when the popular band the darkness entered the charts, music critics called them the first big band of the new popular, long hair, lead guitar, pop hook hard rock but they failed to realize that bon jovi has kept pre grunge hard rock alive almost singlehandedly

while i don't worship bon jovi, i do respect that they somehow beat the odds unlike any band from any genre in rock and roll history...imagine if a '70s disco artist or band stayed incredibly popular from then until now? never happened :)

...or imagine a british invasion band with suits and ties keeping their look and sound, changing very little, and still selling out stadiums twenty years later? never happened

or imagine a boy group like boys to men, new kids on the block, or n'sync selling out the biggest shows coast to coast for two decades? never happened

i really don't know what made bon jovi click with a major audience for so long

I've been to a few: Michael W. Smith 2x, Salvador 2x, Shaun Groves 2x, Jars of Clay, Jennifer Knapp, Rebecca St. James, Third Day, SONICFLOOd, 39 Stripes, and a few different local bands. But the absolute best concert I've ever been to was just last Sunday night when I went to see Jeff Deyo (who was the lead singer of the original SONICFLOOd). :)

I've seen Phish 66 times.

Starting in 1995, until 2003.

Good times.

My Highlight would be, seeing them at the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation in the Florida Everglades for the Millienium New Years Eve.

Me and about 80,000 other people witnessed Phish play starting at the 12:00 AM new years countdown, till 6:00 AM in the morning non stop.

Needless to say, it was crazy....the single greatest thing I've ever experienced.

.........ahhhh....to be there again.......:)

God, this is going back a bit.

Jean-Michel Jarre at Docklands
Glastonbury Festival 1990 (James, The Cure, Happy Mondays, Ry Cooder, Jesus Jones, & Hothouse Flowers I remember being highlights)
Prince
The Wonder Stuff x 3
Reading Festival x 2 (incl. New Order :) )
Blur
V Festival x 2

+ numerous bands at student venues around the country during the 90s.

Last gig was Zero 7 at the Shepherds Bush Empire. I live round the corner from ULU but never go as I feel like someone's father compared to all the 20 year olds in there :(

EDIT : Oh yeah, nearly forgot. The Three Tenors at the Union Buildings, Pretoria.

what a great topic for a thread.

here are a few that i can recall from the last several years. i'm probably leaving some out...

2003:
-radiohead
-the flaming lips (small venue, amazing show, covered 'breathe' by pink floyd, got to meet the band and hang out with them after the show)
-tool
2004:
-zwan
-dispatch (their final concert in boston. it was a free show that lasted for over three hours with a crowd of over 110,000. i was right up front.)
-sonic youth (amazing show, front and center, got setlist from stage after)
-the pixies (hammerstein ballroom, nyc. right up against the stage, also got setlist)
2005:
-the dresden dolls (played with NIN, covered radiohead's 'karma police', got to meet them and hang out for awhile after the show)
-nine inch nails (orpheum theater in boston, club tour, played lots of unexpected songs, was especially amazing since i'd waited nearly five years to see them live)
-weezer
-sigur rós (most emotional experience of my life, quite literally in tears. beautiful concert hall in bethesda, md. audience was deathly silent during songs. haven't seen anything like it in my life. also i got a setlist.)
-nine inch nails (mci center in washington, d.c. arena tour, amazing energy)

I think its just the fact that they have remained so true to their music. Bon Jovi never really sold out. They won there fans over and they kept them as they evolved and grew up. Its funny because you look at Bon Jovi today and you dont see them as some guys who are trying to fit in, you just seem them as a group of guys who have grown up.

And as for selling out Arenas to the date, I think it has to do with the fact that Jon Bon Jovi is an excellent Vocalist. I dont think I have ever heard someone sound THAT MUCH better live then on an album. I saw the Stones play recently, I thought it was brutal - couldnt believe what I was hearing haha.

If you want to see a Bon Jovi concert and see what I mean about his vocals, watch this stream:

Seen way too many to count but the number one highlight has to have been the Smashing Pumpkins' final show December 2, 2000 at the Metro in Chicago. 4 hours long, great set, and of course I was in the front row right in front of James Iha.

Hate you.
I also hate my parents- cause they apparently could've easily gotten tickets through a connection, but they didn't think I wanted them.
Must have been the most amazing concert ever. I never saw them live...so I almost want them to reunite...but then again, reuniting bands never seem to be any good.

First concert was a biggie: the US Festival in 1983. Saw everybody from The Clash to Ozzy to Van Halen to U2. More than my 12 year-old mind could take.

I was there. 3 days of insanity put on by Steve Wozniak. INXS, Oingo Boingo, Flock Of Seagulls, Stray Cats, English Beat, Quiet Riot, Motley Crew, Judas Priest, Pretenders, Joe Walsh, Stevie Nicks, David Bowie to name a few more.

I also went to a ton of Day On The Greens, my first was the Stones in 1978.
Reggae Sunsplash, Greek Jazz Festivals.....

Seen hundreds of shows from The Greatful Dead to Journey to Rush to The Cure to Public Enemy.

Worked at The Warfield in San Fran, so saw a lot of shows there.

Recently saw Thievery Corporation and Brazilian Girls.

I see a lot of people liked NIN concerts on here.
I have to agree, they put on a great show. I didn't know some of the less-popular songs, but it was still fantastic. Easily the best concert I've been to.

I also liked the recent Depeche Mode concert. Not as good as NIN, but their new cd is great. Nothing like "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence" back to back. And the classic "Just Can't Get Enough" that doesn't quite fit in a stadium setting...

Local H also put on a good show. I was completely deaf after it though, especially because it was in a small club. The drummer reminds me of "Animal" the muppet, cause he has long hair and bangs on the drums. Their cover of Spears' "Toxic" was instantly classic.

U2 always put on a good show. A lot of people listed them here. I caught their show in Chicago for their "All That You Can't Leave Behind" tour. "I Will Follow" was done very well, even though it's not my favorite.
