Bloomberg takes a look at Apple's spate of corporate acquisitions over the past six months, which has seen the company reverse a long-standing policy of making very infrequent deals with its recent purchases of Quattro Wireless, Lala Media, Intrinsity, and Siri. In particular, the report points to the growing rivalry between Apple and Google, stoked in large part on the acquisitions front by Google reportedly swooping in to snatch mobile advertising firm AdMob just as Apple was looking to finalize a deal to do so.
"The pace has really picked up, there seems to be a strategic shift," said Charlie Wolf, an analyst with Needham & Co. in New York. "It looks like there's an acquisition frenzy going on between Google and Apple in the sense that there's an increasing urgency on Apple's part to stay even if not ahead of Google in the phone space and apps space.
One interesting tidbit included in the report is evidence that Apple has sometimes moved very quickly when looking to make an acquisition, even giving targets as little as three hours to agree to a deal.
To avoid publicity and possible rival bids, Apple in some cases has offered a target only a three-hour period in which to accept the terms of a sale, according to one executive with knowledge of the situation.
Apple's increased interest in corporate acquisitions was noted earlier this year, with the company's hiring of its first dedicated mergers and acquisitions specialist last year possibly signaling the priority shift.
"They learned a good lesson with AdMob" because they had to settle for "second-fiddle Quattro," said Brian Marshall, an analyst with Broadpoint AmTech in San Francisco. "They've got the resources. They have the team to do acquisitions now. It's a technology land grab right now."
Apple has traditionally shied away from such acquisitions, preferring to develop its technology in-house with its own culture and only occasionally engaging in purchases of much smaller companies. Even then, Apple has been tight-lipped about its plans for those companies, sometimes pursuing specific technologies or intellectual property and other times primarily looking to acquire talented individuals for its own projects.

The rise of the tech companies. Which one is going to become "Ultratech"?

Bonus points if you get that reference. ;)

What's hilarious is the hypocrisy on these boards. Apple can (and should?) move at lightning speed but Google should just standby while Apple is lollygagging in its preparation to purchase Admob? What a joke.

I don't see the hypocrisy, all I see is people amazed at how little time some companies get to decide the fate of their company.

Its good to see apple and Google competing the way they seem to be. Some amazing things have come from both sides of the camp (for me at least) so I hope it continues.

Next on Apple's list should be Drop Box.

I love DropBox... because it works great and is free (for a limited amount of storage space).

If Apple purchased them, they'd probably be merged into Mobile Me/iDisk and it would no longer be free. It probably would be a good investment for Apple... but not so good for us non-paying users of the service.

Google & Apple

Some thoughts:

Google is encroaching on Apple's core business: selling devices.
Google runs large server farms for it's web search business.

Apple is increasingly hostile towards Google.
Apple is setting up large server farms.

Does that mean, Apple is going into the search engine business, soon?

This Apple vs Google thing is like the Cold War all over again, but with corporate acquisitions instead of NATO and Bloc states.

Who will spend their way into oblivion first..? Only time will tell.

I hope not. When I search for something, I want to find what's out there, not what Apple thinks is "appropriate".

Apple should quickly develop an "isearch" and put Google out of business before they take over the world.... Seriously, There is not a more diabolical company not run by Chavez, Putin, or Beijing.

Now tell me sir, just what on earth makes you think Apple wouldn't do exactly the same thing Google does?

With $40B in the bank, it's easier to buy and integrate, then develop from scratch.

If Apple could 'quickly' develop a search that could compete with Google they would have already done it. In fact, many companies would have done it in order to try and get a cut of the large amounts of money Google rakes in. Problem is that it's not easy and it couldn't happen quickly. Apple would always be playing catch up (you think Google is standing still?) and they already have resource issues to think about.

Rumor Apple buying LOOK to compete against Google in search

If you look at the yahoo message boards, there is a rumor that started on Friday that Apple may be purchasing a company called LOOK to compete against Google in search. The purpose probably wouldn't be specifically to compete with Google or the Microsoft/Yahoo partnership but rather to derail Google's aspirations of world domination by forcing Google to focus on it's bread and butter which is search. Considering Google makes 95% of its money from it's search platform and that is what allows it to compete with Apple in mobile phones, with Microsoft in the cloud and to grow into new directions ie: Google TV, Apple entering into search and putting the new search browser (isearch.com) the default search provider on every i-Pod touch, i-Phone, i-Pad and Mac computer will give them an instant presence in the market. Think about it, if Apple takes only 1% of search from Google based on it being the default provider to their (Apple devices), Google's stock would plummet because it would be readily apparent that Google's growth story is over.. This is something they must do to kill Google. This is a David vs. Goliath battle but Goliath is going to win this round. Go Apple.

Oh, and here is a link to the story that started all the rumors. It is a very interesting article. Read it... Oh, and for all you haters, Apple could probably buy Looksmart.com (LOOK) for $100 million which is pocket change.

Would Apple look smart to enter the online search fray?

I think those farms are being set up in order to store their Game Center and the iTunes stream service. And the whole business of setting up a search engine from scratch able to compete with Google's algorithms isn't easy. So IMO that's very unlikely.
