So I bought this unit:
UPDATE (6/6/2010): BTSTACK GPS version 1.3 WORKS WITH NAVIGON ON iPAD WIFI (non-3G model)!!!! AND it fixes the JUMPY speedo! so it's all good!
Video of working Navigon + iPad Wifi model + BTStack GPS 1.2-24995 + QStarz Q818x:

You can fast foward but there are some speed issues (the MPH indicator will go bezerk but the GPS data is accurately maintained, however. Email is dispatched to the dev regarding this issue)

Video of Navigon running on iPad WIFI model using roqyGPS w/QStarz Q818x GPS unit.

(see post #62 for details)
edit: 5/10/2010: Navigon seems to have a problem on the iPad - I'm sure it's a navigon only issue since google maps has no issue whatsoever using the roqyGPS and my QStarz Q818x unit. Google maps actually track movement without problems...just that there are no maps being update as the car moves obviously since it's not connected to any data.
in theory, this should work 100% I will know when my gps device arrives.
1) Install roqyBT
2) Use bluetooth GPS device
3) Use Navigon software (even if not iPad compatible yet will work)
edit: 5/11/2010: Navigon DOES INDEED TRACK - HOWEVER IT WORKS WITH QUIRKS. WHEN YOU ARE IN THE "SHOW MAPS" MODE, YOU WILL SEE THAT NAVIGON DOES INDEED TRACK YOUR POSITION. WHEN YOU TRAVERSE, IT WILL DISPLAY YOUR COORDINATES IN REAL TIME. HOWEVER, IT HAS ALOT OF ISSUES SUCH AS ORIENTATION PROBLEMS (SHOWS THAT YOU ARE POINTING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION BUT MOVING FORWARD - GIVING A LOOK AS IF YOU ARE MOVING BACKWARDS!). When you set a destination to go towards, it will pinpoint your current location - then it just stops and not update your location; it seems that way but during your traversing, navigon will sometimes randomly display your movement but at many times more than some, it will show you moving strangely!
But GOOGLE MAPS WORKS!! (see post #69)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FB8GVzA5nE
You don't even need to have the iPad 3G model to get GPS! Thanks to roqyBT, you can use almost all NMEA GPS receivers!
I'll report back when I get the gps unit this week!

You didn't 'enable' it haha... you just bought a device for it.
'Enable' hints that there is a GPS chip in the iPad that isn't on. Which would be pointless to include if it wasn't enabled.

How much is this unit?
It's an MTK2 device.
66Channels - one of the highest dbm sensitive gps with about over 40 hours of use. You can google the unit: QStarz BT-818x
The unit is about $63 purchased online.
You can get any SIRF3 or MTK/MTK2 units and it is compatible. Here's a list of compatible devices (from the roqyBT forums): Navigon, tom tom, even google maps will work with roqyBT and any of these devices tested so far

I"m going to post up a whole video review of it. I'm excited - considering how JB really opened up the opportunities with the iPad!
I want a really reliable gps receiver - the iPhone and even the tomtom mount is a rip really.
This sucker Qstarz BT818x is an MTK2 unit - provides about 40+ hours of usage!

roqyBT works on iPhone - tested using the BT GPS only. There is another app for file transfers it's called roqyFiles
It seems to be working for the iPad as well - just have to get my unit and test. But the iPad and iPhone shares the exact same BT hardware.
this one is only for BT GPS devices.

don't worry, I'm not offended ;)
I just thought it would be sweet to have an option for us wifi only owners. Since I can't afford another iPad 3G, the lucky ones already have a clean solution with the gps built right in!
It's a way for poor folk to get more value from their existing hardware :-)
You can get a $19 GPS unit and it will work fine too. No need for 66channels but hey, $63 isn't that much compared to say a tomtom gps mount!
And the benefits are huge: 9.7" car navigation and the sucker's battery lasts so long, it's so legit!

IDK, I just feel like the whole purpose of the iPad is portability. To make our mobile computing life easier by not having to lug around a bunch of bulky hardware. I just wonder at what point are we negating the purpose. All these people getting a personal hotspot for 3/4G now this. Just not for me.
Have fun though hope it suits your needs

Get a GPS for location services, a MIFI for 3G, a keyboard for typing, a bunch of cases for various occasions, a stand for watching movies, a dock for charging, a camera adapter to load photos, a cleaning cloth, put on an anti-glare screen protector, other accessories for your specific needs, and a big bag to put in all these things, and you will be all set.
Very simple, really.

My GPS shipped - it will be here hopefully by saturday USPS delivery. If not, it will get here by monday.
The gps unit is the size of a deck of cards. What you have to understand is that it is a really excellent GPS unit that supports 66channels and battery life of about 40+ hours constant usage.
When I get this all setup and video recorded, you'll see the beauty of this combination.
I'm not knocking on people who paid more for a 3G unit, but you just cannot compare an external GPS unit to the one that is built into the iPhone. There's NO COMPARISON - this external gps beats it hands down - but then again, i'll know 100% for sure when i receive my unit and get it all working together.
Navigon (though not built for iPhone) - should work with JB'ed iPad via roqyGPS bluetooth stack. That app will support a huge list of NMEA gps devices. Navigon, tomtom, even google maps will work with roqyGPS.

I'm doing this too, my gps should arrive today but only cost me 10 GBP.
If people have a nokia symbian phone with gps then there is a symbian app called Extgps that can share the gps via Bluetooth to roqybt.
It didn't work with my e52 though but should on other phones.

I am very interested in this. The only reason I am getting the 3G model is for the GPS. I have a couple of small BT GPS units which I would rather use as one of them also keeps it's own GPX track as well as acting as a BT receiver. However I am a little sceptical that this idea will work on all GPS applications for the iPad. A good test would be to try a number of apps like MotionX to see if these apps see an alternative GPS.

I am having probs running MotionX. It wont pickup the GPS. I have the stack running and can open the GPS window in the stack and see position etc so everything that end is working. But I kick off MotionX and it just sits looking for a GPS. (spinning red globe and weak signal). Did I miss something in the process?
--update--
It is working after all. In MotionX the coordinates are working and updating as I move. It appears that the status of the GPS isnt transferred so hence the spinning red (no gps) globe and weak signal. I suspect these aren't covered in the NMAE sentences that are transmitted to the iPad.

No offense to OP or anyone else but if there isn't going to be a Jailbreak subcategory here, it would be awesomely helpful if people would somehow indicate that Jailbreak is required in the thread title. I sometimes end up reading through 1/2 the thread before realizing that Jailbreak is required. Yes, I had at least a suspicion that this was the case and yes, I AM nitpicking. :-)
Not that I am against jailbreaking (my iPhone is jailbroken/jailbreaked/jailbroke/jailbreakered/jailbusted-out!). As for iPad, I am holding out for a) more reasons (like this) to jailbreak and b) an update or two from Apple. Not that jailbreaking could be any easier....

eTip, backgrounder is all the reason I needed to Jailbreak my iPad. it takes literally about 30 seconds to do so why not?
No, I know - and good point. Other than pure laziness and procrastination, I guess I have no good excuse. ;-)

LMAO!! Dude, that is funny...
In ref to the RoqyBT and external GPS receiver, I too have ordered a GPS receiver (Bluetooth) $34 for my iPad. I am jailbroken so I can use and have already downloaded RoqyBT, so in a few days I should get the receiver and report back with my findings on how good it works:)

I received my unit today - but late as usual - I hate USPS - lazy bastards.
(see very first post for images)
Anyway, took some quick photo - I did drive all the way home with the unit connected to my iPhone 3GS - one word: AMAZING PERFORMANCE.
SIGNAL LOCK INSTANTANEOUSLY WHEN STARTING NAVIGON. I did not receive one signal drop period.
I will setup a video shortly to demonstrate all of the kick ass features. One thing to note: the 818x even works INDOORS! I don't know how the heck it does this but it does get a clean signal lock of about 7 satellites indoors away from a window!!
I'm very happy with my 818x - I will test on iPad but preliminary tests shows that the iPad wifi has issues with NAVIGON; so I will test on tomtom software. On iPod and iPhone, it is PHENOMENAL. Worth every penny just to get a clean signal lock on the iPhone/iPod touches!

Here is a video of the QStarz Q818x bluetooth device hooking up with roqyGPS in an iPad.
COLD BOOT - which means you flip the switch on the GPS unit to NAV (on) - the signal takes ~30 seconds to lock.
WARM BOOT - which means you leave it GPS unit on or in auto on/off mode, it takes ~1 second to a max of 15 seconds (in my test runs, it took only <10 seconds) to lock on satellites for signal lock.
inside iPhone 3GS - navigon doesn't even look for GPS signal, it just locks in immediately. VERY impressive - I don't have a tomtom mount to test, but I can detest that this 818x is so impressive, I had a signal lock when the damn thing is inside my glove compartment and also INSIDE MY REAR CAR TRUNK!! It's that sensitive! Lock on is so fast and I never lost a signal during my 26 mile commute home!
Here is the youtube video of it syncing with roqyGPS. Once it is synced, just exit roqyGPS - you will see a bluetooth icon in the status bar but your normal bluetooth can be off or ON working in parallel to roqyGPS!!

I've seen the great Hardware and the great software, and the you-tube video connecting to roqyBT. Even the start up video of Navigon on the iPad. But no one has yet provided proof that it is actually tracking while driving or at least moving with the iPad. I've heard some of the bloggers mention the roqyBT works on the iPad, but not actually working with the resident apps, i.e. Google maps, Navigon, TomTom. Can someone nail the proof so we can put this baby to bed? Thanks... Still waiting for my GPS receiver to come. Everything else is prepped and ready on my WiFi iPad.

Like I said in my post, there is some tracking problems with the Navigon - it does MOVE! When you select show map option, it will track your movements but it's quirky at the moment. This is on iPad only. I believe it has to do with the GPS data functions inside navigon since it is not designed for the iPad, I'm sure if they release an iPad version or an update, it may work flawlessly.
Google maps work just fine. You can mywi tether it with an iPhone and googlemaps functions great. So it has much to do with navigon and iPad itself. I will test out other navigation software and see what the results are.
If anyone wants to get a gps unit, this one is really sweet!

Thanks for the info Bro...
FYI, here is a very interesting video I found that reportedly shows the WiFi iPad connected to the TomTom car kit and running the Navigon app on the road. Guess you would have to break the carkit to modify it to connect to the dock of the iPad since it justs cradles the iphone. I have a TomTom car kit which I use with my iphone, but it's rather costly to destroy to try this out. Maybe I can find a used one and see if it works...:)

I agree...this is the cheaper route and honestly, I'm just doing it for the fun of it. I really can't see me using my iPad in the car while driving for Nav. It just takes up too much real estate. My iphone rocks for that using any nav software. But Hey! I love to tinker...:) Hopefully, as you mentioned, the Nav app makers will update their apps to run smoothly on the ipad. I swear, this is the sole reason I would love to pirate all the apps - sort of like a try to buy - especially when this developer gives you a demo version which it seems to be working great - then when you are lured to buying the actual app, it doesn't work for *****.

I don't feel bad for saying this since I presume ipad owners have a lot of disposible income, but do you really have to squeeze every dollar?! I can't imagine the time and effort +30-60 dollars is less than $130?
With that said, I can't wait til navigon makes an ipad version. The iPhone version looks so crappy on the ipad. The ipad 3g gps is way better than the 3GS though.

I actually found this whole thread interesting from a tinkering perspective and appreciate the OP sharing all the results with us.
That said, I can't imagine using an iPad for in-car navigation. For starters, its just too unwieldy and would obscure about all of my dashboard. The brightness issues would also distract me while night driving I'm afraid.
Just seems like a bit of overkill to use something this big for simple navigation.

Your right about that Bigfeet... I don't really need the GPS on my iPad, but I love to push new things to the limit. Since I'm married and spend most of my time running my daughters around I find it therapeutic to tinker when I'm bored...lol My days of rock climbing and triathlons are fading away. Spend most of the time at home now on the computer tracking technology for a hobby. It's forums and input from people such as yourself that I find entertaining. :) Oh Yeah...saying goodbye to the iPhone after 3 years since it's inception and all the jailbreaking good times. I know its a sad day, but I'm looking forward to some time with the Sprint EVO 4G (android). Time for a new toy and a way better network...lol

I think I'll do it not because of the price but because of the accuracy of a bigger GPS chip remember the GPS on the iPad is assisted and on the external one is not so they probably be way more accurate.

I beg to differ. The GPS in the iPad is just as accurate as an external GPS. They both use the same principals. However the "assisted" method that the iPad uses means the GPS will lock onto the satellites a lot faster as it will get a rough location first from the assisted bit.

Clearly you have no idea of what assisted-GPS really means.
By "assisted", it means the GPS on the device is using nearby network signals (I.e. Cellular), and precise network time for startup (initiation) to locate the area/region you are in, before acquiring an exact pinpoint location from the satellites. Hence the "assistance" speeds up the process of a GPS lock on the satellites and pinpoints your exact location faster.

Tomtom works with BTSTACK GPS - this time it works after the new update release. However, navigon still does not see the gps but works fine with roqyBT GPS. Tomtom is terrible!
Tomtom still shows the "connect to GPS" (it keeps flash it) - but the gps signal is solid. I will use it today and see how well tomtom works for now. And NO, FULLFORCE DOESN'T WORK WITH TOMTOM.

Agreed, I don't want to plug in cables, having to hide them in the dash etc...
In the end, you will save maybe about 50 bucks, but you have to compromise on portability and usability.
Ok, if it suits the OP, but this is not for me.

Billy, while that may be true, it does not mean that the iPad a-GPS will necessarily be faster than an external one. A GPS unit's time to first fix (TTFF) depends on a couple of factors. If all of these factors were the same (i.e., two unit's with the same chips, power sources, etc., were being compared with the exception of assisted vs. non-assisted) then yes, the a-GPS would have a faster TTFF. But not all GPS units are equal - some are most definitely better than the iPad, while others won't be.
Not to mention companies (like apple) know that a-GPS is better, so they put lower power GPS chips in their products to save battery life (since with a strong cell tower signal the standalone GPS capability is effectively irrelevant).
So where people like iPadThai will be better off is in locations where there's no cell tower signal. I don't know what chip is in the iPad but it's worth looking into if you are not sure about which iPad to buy.
A little on a tangent here, but check out the following tables: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ttffcomparisons.php

What's with the rudeness?
You see I didn't know that but what you say totally makes sense since my iPhone can get my location even when I'm outside coverege, altough I still believe that the chip in the ipad isn't as powerful or as acurate as an external gps on the ipad they focused on a small low power consuming chip and on the external gps that I have in mind they go for accuarcy

Thanks for the discovery iPT. I have Navigon working well with BTStack also. I have also been playing with Alk Copilot HD, which I rashly bought after hearing about RoqyBT, but this combination doesn't work. Alk is able to find its location, but can't track once you star moving. With BTStack, Copilot sort of works for me, but is very choppy, with several second long pauses before it resumes tracking. The worst problem is that the turn-by-turn voice commands don't work, even though audio, such as ipod and button clicks and voice test all work. What's your experience?
I said screw it and checked out other options that lead me to this setup. I am going to try copilot - will report back soon!

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the fact that all navigation progranmes are not optimised/fully compatible with iPad yet, for example i tried an older version of Navigon (v.1.5) and it worked and i got the voice instuctions too. Also i tried the latest version of Tom Tom and it worked fine incl. turn by turn instructions. I guess we have to wait for the versions of all these navigation programmes that will fully support iPad.

All Ipads have GPS chip. The GPS disables itself on the WiFi versions when it can't detect WiFi.
Otherwise you'd get a blue dot with no background on the Maps app.
Care to back up that claim with some evidence?
It's amazing how many people still think that it has a GPS chip. The reason it stops giving you your position when it loses WIFI is that it's using WIFI triangulation to give you your position.

Er, no it doesn't.
Teardowns have proven that the wifi model does not have a physical GPS chip.
There is no chip to disable when wifi is not detected. you get the blue dot because of skyhook, not because the nonexistant chip is enabled when connected to wifi.

Eeeeeehhh-ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Wrong. It uses wifi triangulation (if your area supports it) to discover your location.
No wonder :apple: users get a bad rep, most are talking out their ass. A simple google search would of explained this to you.

Yeah, how come Navigon works on my iPad Wifi when I tether it using iTether? Technically my Wifi access point is moving at 60 mph..... does that mean Skyhook is tracking it?

Right, and since iPod touches support the same location services, they also have GPS chips in them, right?!
Your iPad makes note of other wireless networks as it comes across them. It doesn't have to disconnect you from your iTether in order to do this. By keeping track of the strength of other wireless networks around you, it can use the SkyHook database (or a similar pre-built database that correlates WiFi networks to their GPS locations) to roughly triangulate your position.
The more WiFi networks near your iPad, the better the accuracy of the guess as to where you're at.
This isn't a magical feature of the iPad or the iPod touch. Virtually every smartphone made (Android, Windows Mobile, Palm) in the last two years supports this feature.

Just wondered how you got MotionX GPS drive HD for the ipad (Wifi). I have jailbroken the iPad, and when I go to order Motion GPS drive HD, it says I need an iPad with 3g.
Just wondered how this app is downloaded onto the iPad Wifi.
Thanks.
Anybody have a solution to this? I tried buying the app through iTunes on my computer, and although that worked, it won't install when I sync my iPad, saying it's not compatible. Now I'm just out $2.99 + tax.

You can request a refund inside iTunes.

Has anyone used this setup with the Trapster app for iPad (or know if it can be done)? I opted not to go with the 3G model (before i knew about the GPS not being included in the wifi model; poor research on my part, i know) primarily because i have a standing contract with Verizon for phone/mobile 3G and AT&T sucks out here in corn-country. I have no problem using my Droid2 as a wireless hotspot and running the wifi iPad off of it but apparently even with GPS enabled on my phone it does not, and i'm told it will not, share my location with the iPad. This setup with the bluetooth GPS seems to work great with navigation apps, but i wanted to make sure it would work with Trapster before i went and jailbroke my iPad and spent the money on the GPS. Thanks for any help!

All I can offer is that my 3G (with real GPS) gives very different performance than my wife's wifi (WITHOUT GPS) when I compare them using any apps using location services.
The wifi can be scary accurate sometimes but there is just no way it has a true GPS. Side by side comparison does not lie.

There is another CYDIA APP that is called BTSTACK GPS and that app I initially hated but now it is at version 1.5 which is so much better in terms of performance/support than the bluetooth gps I originally used. You people who want to use external gps should try the btstack gps.
especially now when NAVIGON supports the iPad!!

Honestly, try going over a bridge where there is no wifi around. I guarantee you it won't work. The reason you think its working is cause your hitting tons of wifi access points.

Seems okay if you want to carry around multiple devices which defeats the purpose of having a slim portable tablet.
Well, blame Apple for that. These hypocrites delete features and make devices pointlessly thinner while touting their "elegance", but then expect you to carry a bunch of dongles and wires around all the time. Going on vacation and want to share photos from your camera? Better buy and never forget your "camera connection kit." Want to get video from your video camera onto your iPad to show people at dinner? Not gonna happen.
Never mind that a proper USB interface would eliminate all of this and let you get a connector at any Wal-Mart or other retailer should you forget it.
They just don't learn. Even the record companies learned that DRM was pointless, and eliminated it. Yet Apple, the biggest seller of music, hasn't taken that lesson to heart and eliminated the pathetic and unnecessary limitations that reduce its handheld Unix computers to toys and gimmicks.
And no tablet should be made without GPS. That's just an idiotic failure to expand the market for these things and provide a function that is undeniably useful.

After almost one year of iPad 1 WIFI model bluetooth GPS review:
I'll put it this way. The number of times I've taken my WIFI ipad 32GB outdoors and into my car for "gps" use: 3 times.
Why not use it more often? because it's a real pain in the ass having to do. Yes, flipping the switch on the external gps module + tapping the btstack GPS app on the iPad is too much work. Jokes aside, it's a real bummer setup and I honestly haven't even bothered after owning my iPhone 4, I just use navigon 1.7 on the 3.5" screen it's puny but at least it's retina res...
The iPad 2 is out and for sure, I'll get the GPS model. Yes, that means the 3G model even if I only use Wifi. I'm very sure I'll use the GPS more if I buy one with it built in.
Thanks guys for all your posts...it was fun while it lasted!
PS - the worse of all is the fact I have to JB the damn ipad to get btstack GPS to function. And you know how JB's go - they take forever to release! I like the upgraded firmwares so much i didn't want to wait for a Potential release of the JB so it was quite annoying. That's why having real GPS built in is way better than these hacks which cost me more money almost nearly half the upgrade cost to a 3G/GPS model!

I wonder if there is a way for the iPhone to transmit it's GPS data to the iPad over bluetooth in real time.... Kinda like how iTether for the iPad works...

I have been using BTstack to link my JB ipad1 with my Holux 1000B and 1000C for the past 3 months and it's been working great. To me, this was my biggest incentive to JB.
I find that, in general, an external gps works much better (faster acquisition and better accuracy) than the built-in gps of mobile devices (am comparing with my Nokia 5800, HTC Legend and Samsung Galaxy SL), plus u get much better battery life (my Holuxes use the commonly-available Nokia BL-5C battery).
Btw, I tried roqyBT before I used BTstack and it just didn't seem to work with my Holuxes.

People say that using the built in hotspot feature now shares GPS coordinates to WiFi iPads, but only every minute or something that makes it useless.
Anything akin to TetherGPS available for Android phones (share coordinates to another Android device in real-time- I've got it set up with my Xperia arc and my Nook Color for use with Google Nav- works quite well)?

I am wondering if anyone used that setup with Foreflight. Would be great if I could use that as a backup navigation device. Plane's Garmin GNS430 has outdated database.

I thought I'd seen ads in the AOPA newsletter showing a device sharing GPS over Wi-Fi, for aviation use.
