Hello, fellow Users.
Need your advice on a little aspect.

iStat reads as follows.

ODD 800 rpm
CPU 1200 rpm
HDD 1600 rpm

Normal HDD temp varies around 50C during normal usage, and around 40C during little usage.

Using the WD Black Caviar 1TB.

Is that normal? Should I reduce the fan speed?
Haven't used SMCFan Control yet.

If it stays below 55c, there is no need to speed up the fans. 1600rpm is the default HD fan speed so that's normal

My concern came from the direction of most HDD fans running in the region of 900-1200 rpm. To I thought mine was running a little high.

I suppose those were smaller/older models.

How 'fast' is your 640GB?

The default set by OS X for at least 24" iMacs is 1600rpm.

What you mean by "fast"? I have no issues with its "slowness", it's as fast as I hoped. Sure launching things like Photoshop takes pretty long time but overall it's pretty fast

By 'fast' I meant - your HDD fan speed.

Recently installed XP in Bootcamp for some gaming and now have this conviction my fans are running louder than before.
Although iStat says otherwise I can almost swear my HDD ('s fan) sounds louder.

I have mine set to 2200rpm with SmcFanControl. Even though they are hearable, they don't really bother me. Try reseting PRAM and SMC (Google) and see if they sound better afterwards

Will try.
They spin at the same rpm though. Just sound a little louder. Or at least I think so.

Wonder if XP/Bootcamp had something to do with it.
