I tried to check all boxes in powersaver except 'wake for ethernet access'...the display goes to sleep, but the mac pro itself is constantly, it seems, trying to shut down, followed by an irritating whining noise, which keeps happening every few minutes. for all the time it is in sleep mode..when start using it stops the noise,,,any help would be great...thanx

Your post is kinda frelled up.
Btw, what exact Mac Pro do you have? Did an SMC reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) help?
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
