ZAGREB (Reuters) - A veteran Croatian hunter was shot by his own hound while preparing to go off into the woods, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Spaso Ivosevic, a hunter in central Croatia since 1957, cleaned and loaded his double-barreled shotgun as usual on Wednesday, the Jutarnji List daily said.

Ivosevic briefly leaned the gun against a wall near his house when his 2-year-old dog Lero, chasing chickens through the yard, stormed past and tripped over the shotgun.

It hit the ground and fired, showering Ivosevic with pellets.

The hunter was treated for a fractured leg bone, while the fate of Lero was not known.

I'm just glad that the injuries weren't more serious. You just can never be too careful. Accident just happen. In time he may be able to have a laugh about the incident also.

So we have two people getting shot by their own dogs within a month or two? 😀 I think it's time to rethink calling dogs man's best friend. 😛 😉

well the first guy who got shot by the dogs was trying to kill them so in my opinion he deserved it

in this case it just seems bad luck; would be a shame to blame the dog tho

If you load a gun, wouldn't you put the safety on?

No indication of that here, so who really knows. Its a case of dumn luck and stupidity by the hunter. In cases like these they leave so much out.....there was no mention of beer or other alcohol - but I'd wager it was a contributing factor 😀

You shouldn't be walking with a loaded (or with a round chambered for semi/auto's) gun anyway, especially in the woods!

ummmm he was hunting, how do u expect to hunt in the woods without a loaded gun?

Good point. I wonder what he was thinking, probley that he has nothing to worrie about or something to that extent

Yeah, he probably didn't think getting shot by his own gun would be possible after hunting for about 50 years. Its not as if he's so paranoid that everytime he loads his gun, he eyes his sneaky dog who's just waiting for the perfect opportunity. 😉

Because we have a right to hunt and defend ourselves.

I'm not a gun owner (yet) but I plan to get something to protect myself and my wife. Living in Dallas, you never know what whacked out crackhead is going to come into your house looking for money or something worse. Don't generalize guns as bad...

That said, obviously any type of assault weapon should be illegal. But I do believe in the basic right to bear arms. It's a sad side effect that there are enough nutjobs with guns in the world to make the world we live in unsafe...but that doesn't mean that a regular guy like me shouldn't be able to have some protection lying around.

I am not sure what country you live in, but in the USA, our Constitution gives us the right to bear arms.
