today one of our local music stores raffled off a yamaha pacifica electric guitar, a 15 watt electric guitar practice amplifier, a walden acoustic electric guitar, and a $2400 dollar santa cruz pre-war dreadnaught...and i didn't win any of them...oh well

they also raffled off strings, shirts, hats, and coffee mugs and i didn't even win one of those either...but hundreds of musicians, and non musicians from all of northern california showed up at sylvan's music in santa cruz to win that expensive guitar

usually music stores have free raffles and maybe give away a couple of hundred dollars worth of stuff, but sylvan's music gave away five grand worth of stuff for their 20th anniversary and had local musician's show up and give performances...since the store is on highway 1 i hoped neil young, who lives up that road a distance, would show up unexpected as he sometimes does in santa cruz...but he wasn't there

Wow I see the worlds smallest violin playing in the background. *pitty party* sorry I know how you feel though, but I mean you can't guarentee winning anything really. How do you know it wasn't just a fake thing? How do you know they didn't raffle it off to someone who works there and then they return it the next day? Some of those things are rigged.

the raffle brought in a huge number of customers and people were buying left and right, so the raffle probably paid off in the end

that would be terrible if the guitar really wasn't won, but they had the president of santa cruz guitars pick the winning ticket so i think it was real

it was also a great chance for musicians to see each other who haven't seen each other in years...another event which brings northern california musicians together is union grove music's (also of santa cruz) attempts to break the guinness book of world records most guitarists playing the same song simultaneously and several hundred people bring their instruments and every store within a 500 mile radius, as well as radio stations and music magazines are contacted

there are other areas in the us where expensive and coordinated efforts are made to break this well known record

www.louielouie.net/lou_news_2003_2.htm#1000guitar

they were able to muster up 754 guitarists

the way to break it would be at a namm music convention (industry convention for musical instruments) and have a sponser like fender guitars specially make 1000 guitars or more for the event and televise it and have artists like eric clapton, john mayer, and other famous stratocaster players be in the event...the people at the convention who are music store owners, employees, and wholesale reps are mostly guitar players and if fender supplied the instruments, there would be a good chance to set an unbreakable record

the same time of thing could have been done at the woodstock festival in the 90s...or anywhere there are likely to be a lot of guitarists present at the same time

now breaking a world record for most oboe players or french horn players playing louie louie at the same time would hardly yield a big crowd ;)
