I've been spending the weekend ripping my cds to my new 4g 20 gig iPod and have been surprised about a few things.

1. Albums are important even if all the songs aren't perfect. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA, is still a favorite and I can't imagine listening to it in any other way than in an album format. Brings back lots of memories and certain albums will remain inviolate. Anybody have any albums they feel the same about? At the same time, I truly wonder why I bought some of the cds I own and some only have a song or two that are worth ripping.

2. I haven't listened to music so much in a decade or more and my music purchases since the advent of iTunes probably exceed my music purchases of the last decade. It's so much easier to search out new stuff and sample it in a way that wasn't possible before. I'm no longer a slave to Clear Channel and their drivel.

3. The iPod itself personalizes my music in a way that a walkman never could. Moods are easier to match up with a certain type of music and it's a heck of a lot easier to find a song/album/artist.

I have to admit that when iPods first came out, I thought they were overpriced, stupid and not something I would ever use. After using a friend's 3g I had to have one and fortunately with the arrival of the 4gs, the price was spot on and the capacity was what I needed.

It's only been a week but I already don't know how I existed without one. Anyone else have any iP/iT revelations to share?

Before I got iTunes, I was always hesitant about listening to music on my computer. I remember using Quicktime for some of my downloaded stuff from Napster, and also the Apple Multimedia C.D Player, which i am unable to find on non-classic Macs (with iTunes, go figure?). When I used computers, I also used to listen to the radio, and not worry about my favorites. Now with iTunes, I have all of my songs on my computer(s), and have put my C.D's in storage (in-laws garage), and completely forgotten about them. I can't imagine a computer without iTunes, and yes, it has changed the way I listen to music, I guess in a good way.

There are a few albums including a few series that I listen to in sequence. They include:
The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the galaxy (Box set)
The 12th Man (Australian Comedy)
Crowded House, WoodFace
laslty
U2, All the things you can't leave behind

iTunes is that much better than WIMP (Windows Interactive  Media Player) that my Windows loving brother in-law on first glance of iTunes, downloaded it and burned all of his windows songs as audio to use with iTunes. He is also now contemplating an eMac for his kids, as their next home computer.

I am actually purchasing more music now than I used to because of the ability to buy per song vs having to purchase the full CD. There were countless times I would listen to a CD in the store, and decide not to buy the CD because I only liked 4-6 of the songs and $12-18 was just too much money to spend when I really only liked 1/3rd to 1/2 of the songs.

ITMS is also letting me find many more new to me artists than I did before. Somehow, a CD bin 20' long filled with hundreds of artists is a bit too overwhelming in a brick and mortar store to do much seeking out of new music and/or artists. But, with ITMS new releases each week, its very easy to scroll down the full list, and click on the names that look intriguing and pick up those that I like. ;)

The thing about a iPod/iTunes is that i dont have to use half and hour to find the cd or song i what to hear (I have about 600+ cds/lps) . I have much more music with me when i'm traveling than before. (can't take with me 100 cds when on vacation).

BUT, i still want to buy cds. Its much better to have a cd with cover and booklet than a "name" in iTunes. And i feel that its not secure enuff to only have your music on a hd. With a cd you can both have your music on cd and itunes.
And i can't have all my music on my iPod(10gb) and i haven't mu computer near my stereo..
