iPhone to GoPhone, can it be done?

I'm going to be moving abroad soon, so I'm going to need to cancel my contract. I understand I'll be paying an ETF, but I would like to keep my number while I'm gone. Is it possible to just port my number to a prepaid GoPhone? If not, does anyone know the best way to keep a number without signing another contract with AT&T/another carrier? Thanks.
