Ipod locked up

Is there a way to do a msater reset for the 3gen ipods? Mine has been hooked up to my computer and all of a suden the ipod icon dissapeared from my desktop but the ipod said do not disconect. I disconected it and the screen is now frozen. It will not shut off.

plug it into a power source and move the hold switch on an off and then hold the play and menu button together, that should reset the ipod
