cracked screen, external monitor?

I have an imac 24 inch model with a cracked screen. I bought a mini dvi to vga adapter and wondered is there any special way I need to hook it up to use an external monitor? Unfortunately, I can not access anything on that computer because the screen is cracked. Is some magic combination of keys on boot to have the computer use the external monitor?

Not that I am aware of.

Here are the Apple keyobard shortcuts: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343 .

I think you could try to use Voice Over.

Hopefully that works I don't imagine you had screen sharing enable on your iMac?

Otherwise it could be attempted via another Mac.

Attempted by another mac huh? Would you mind telling me more about this trick?
