Well, I switched out the ram in my new Alubook from the standard two 256 dimms to a total of 2 gigs of ram from OWC.

Now I was assured that the ram is the same specs as Samsung and there is a life time warrenty, so i am not too worried there.
and that the CL 2.5 was accurate.

But I am having a few troubles that is making my work suffer or actually just me!

Firstly my computer doesnt seem as fast as it was.

One major symptom is that when I right click for context sensitive menu.
I get BEAcHBALLED! I hate that and was happy when i first got the powerbook, that i never had that happen.

But it seems to me that after the ram change, I lost some speed when i thought that I would gain!

Now during this time I also installed alot of apps.
So i question the slow down to either bad ram.
or my HD slowing down for some reason.

As always I am hoping that the minds and experience of the Macrumors members have the answers. :o

Well, I don't know if I can be of any help yet, but I may be able to be of some help tomorrow, or at least find out if it is a common problem. My new PB should be here tomorrow and I have 2 gig sticks of ram from OWC sitting around waiting to go in it. I can report back after I put them in and see if I have similar issues if you want. I will have the same amount of ram in the book before I upgrade, in the same configuration as yours.

If you notice your computer responding more slowly than before..trust me, its not your imagination. I am guessing its the RAM. I purchased a 1gb samsung stick from owc yesterday, received it today and installed it in one of my powerbooks (12 " 1.33 ghz) and the thing practically flies now. Applications open a LOT faster and its definitely not my imagination! It could be your hard drive, but if you have 2 gigs..thats just impossible to imagine that the hard drive could bog your system down so much (unless you have 25 mb of space left on it) What brand of ram did you buy? It might have the same specs as a Samsung stick, but that does not make it a Samsung. I had the choice of buying the 1gb generic stick for a price that was much lower than that of the samsung but you get what you pay for. Not all Ram is equal.

Have you tried putting back the original sticks of RAM? Try that...If it goes back to normal maybe it's one/both of your new RAM. If so, you could put each 1gig stick in at a time to see which one it is.

You say you have installed a lot of apps. Have you repaired permissions? Run cron scripts?

First thing I would do is repair your permissions and THEN I would follow the advice of Natalia81.

I got my RAM from OWC and one of the chips were bad. Their customer support is really good and they helped me determine which was the faulty chip. I sent it back and they overnighted me a new chip. All is well.

Thanks for the replys all~

I got the other version of ram from OWC, not the Samsung, they have one other that they claim is completely up to specs as the Samsung.

they told me that that the Samsung was more expensive because of its name only!

My girlfriends computer, the ibook i bought her has only 768 megs of ram and it burns through these thing much faster than my computer, and that bugs me.

I am going to reinstall the old ram right now when i sigh off.
And test it.

I sure hope tha ti dont have to get the Samsung because thats an extra hundred per unit. yowsa~

Agreed. I have had excellent experiences with their customer support. Don't get mad, pick up the phone and have them help you figure this out.

Edit: I also have bought their RAM, but haven't seen any problems as FoxyKaye did below. I picked up 2x512 sticks for my Gigabit and 3x128 for my 7200. All of them have worked without any problems.

I've gone through four sticks of 256MB OWC RAM on either a Beige or Blue/White. The latest one they sent me (which is supposedly brand new), when installed Panther won't even boot. One time previously they sent me an RMA stick that they admitted later was bad RAM, and one other time the stick lasted about three months.

That's been my experience with OWC RAM - Great customer service, products that don't always work. I'm never buying their branded RAM again.

Sorry to hear about your ram troubles with OWC.

It certainly makes me think twice about buying from them.

But there is always some trouble with any company.

The prices for 2 gigs of ram is SO high at other places!
I like the lifetime warrenty, that is helpful or comforting.

I really wonder if the speed is up to snuff.

I wiped my entire drive and reinstalled OSX.
Now to see if it was the OS or the ram!
