iPod touch isn't getting recognized by iTunes?

I have had to install the latest itunes (9.1.1) 3 times just to sync my ipod touch with my Mac. This all happened when I re-installed Snow Leopard on my mac and used time machine to move everything back. But every time I want to sync my iPod I have to re-install iTunes to do it.

Any ideas on fixes, I saw the page on Apple.com support, but it didn't help.

Did you try putting your ipod into DFU mode by pressing the home and power button continuously?

no I haven't but I will try it tonight, I have tried powering the ipod on and off and still nothing. it shows up as an ipod in system profiler.
