My computer froze up on me, and so I had to restart it. Since iTunes was not responding, I couldn't disconnect the iPod. Now that my computer is back up and running, my iPod isn't.
It's still plugged into the dock, with the "Do Not Disconnect" message. However, both my iPod and computer(iMac running OS 10.3.5) act like it's not there. First, my iPod is not charging. The battery life is at halfway. Worse, my iPod isn't being recognized by my mac. It won't open up in iTunes, and there is no icon in finder for it.

What should I do?

Open us Disk Utility and see if it is there. You may have to manually mount it.

Had the same thing happen. I unplugged the firewire cable from the computer, the iPod was fine but after it happened a second time, I had to reset the iPod. (I was trying to use it as a backup and messed up both times.) The interesting thing was the system profiler showed, before i reset the iPod, that three separate iPods were connected. I guess if it's not disconnected properly the computer won't recognize it for what it is.
