In a small art shop today I stumbled upon this little beauty. A simple wooden art easel designed for A4 paper, only 1.99 too. I love it, what do you guys think?

I went a similiar route to Charlie, except I found a nice metal easel in ikea.

It fits the iPad perfectly, though I added some padding to protect my iPad just in case.

Not affiliated at all, just wanted to bring up something that had some interest a couple months back that seems to have been forgotten on these forums (probably as its still in prerelease)

http://www.jadu-industries.com/iPad-Accessories/iPad-Stand.html

This was the one I was going to get before I decided on a combo folio-stand. They changed it in a few ways since it was first announced, most significantly you can now use it in portrait while plugged in. It's a little pricey, but as an engineer myself I can dig that it appears well engineered. The typing angle seems a bit extreme though, I would wait for reviews to roll in.

For $60 I don't think anyone forgot, just stopped thinking about it. ;) The stands posted here and the office depot stand all come in at less than $5.

I myself went with a more modern look & portability...

Well there's also the Joule shown in this thread, which is $129. That said like with anything, you can buy a $5 sleeve, or a $50 sleeve, $20 case, or a $200 one, etc. The title of this thread is "The coolest iPad stand?" IMO it blows everything in this thread out of the water by a mile.

Agreed - that's a cool stand - perhaps the coolest I have seen. It's more than I would pay for a stand but not unreasonable given it's functionality & looks.

Exactly, I realize the title of the thread, but in the statement of the thread the OP does proudly proclaim how inexpensive his new stand is. I kind of took the thread taking a turn towards cool stands on the cheap, and votes for using other types of stands for the IPad.

This is not correct. I have this BookArc stand and it does hold iPad when its got the Apple case on. It comes with two rubber inserts - one for a 'naked' iPad and one thats a little wider for a case. I don't know how it would be with a bulky case but with the Apple one it works fine.

I am awaiting delivery on my Skadoosh...

I have been assured by Jazzy at Jadu that it has been shipped and should be in the UK by the end of next week barring any customs hold ups.

I am really looking forward to having this stand on my desk next to my iMac, it will make air sharing and and air display look and work fantastic, not that they do not look good now, but my iPad is fed up leaning against my speaker.

I was lucky enough to get mine at the lower price of 57 Dollars, but then again it was ordered six weeks ago..... :)

I am gonna set air display to show my bags and char info for my WOW game on the iPad as it will de clutter the main screen when i Play.

Like cases, everyone is looking for something different in a stand. For me, adjustability is not that important. I want stability, support for portrait and landscape and something that is easy put the iPad into (& remove it) and a small footprint. My homemade stand - made from a business card holder, some thick poster-board and some foam rubber suits my needs pretty well.

I posted an earlier version of this a couple months back - but have made some improvements since then. I started with the wire-mesh business card holder which other have used and works pretty well in landscape without any modifications. I was looking for a little more stability - enough to hold the iPad in portrait-mode. I attached the bus. card holder to a piece of black posterboard with double-stick tape, then covered the top with adhesive-backed foam rubber and added some rubber bumpers (the ones on the bottom aren't pictured but these are key since they add stability and prevent the stand from sliding around). Oh and of course, the Apple sticker...

It works great in portrait and landscape and if I turn it upside down it holds the iPad at an angle that works perfect for typing - rubber bumpers protect the iPad and hold it in place. The little white bottle you can partiall see in the last picture is a visine bottle filled with screen cleaner that stores nicely "inside" the stand.

I have a few other stands but this one works best for me. I use my iPad primarily in my living room and keep the stand on my coffee table for (for those rare occasions when the iPad is not in my hands). I also made a second one & keep that next to my computer.

I've been very happy with the Gibson 3A Wire Display Stand, available at Amazon and also online at the Gibsonholders.com website. Actually, I picked mine up locally at a Michael's Craft store, but when I went back to get more they were out, so that's why I started looking around online. You can't beat the price: $2.30 for a single one at the Gibson site, $4.80 at Amazon for a set of 2 black ones or $5.00 for a set of 2 white ones. They're easy to pick up, fold up and tuck into one's bag, or to have sitting around where you're likely to want to plop your iPad when not using it. Works just fine with the iPad in either portrait or landscape positions and naked or with any sort of case. Oh -- Post #23 in this thread shows photos of this very stand in action!

Another happy buyer here for the Mac4U stand shown above. Bought on eBay for under $20, and it's one of the best accessories I've picked up. I use it in my lap all the time, don't even bother with a table or desk. But it's also terrific in the kitchen for recipes, or at a coffee place while working with the wireless keyboard. Love the stability, portability, and price!

IrishVixen
Jul 13, 2010, 05:18 PM
Perfectly stable when typing in landscape or vertical. More so than my TwelveSouth (which is good) or the Groovy Stand (which was a waste of money). Also doesn't wobble the way my flexible wire stand like the one another poster listed does. I've used that one with a Kindle for over a year, and while it's good (and cheap), it's too lightweight to trust my iPad with it.

Anyway, it looks OK, but too expensive for not being adjustable or portable. It's going after looks more than anything else, but it isn't something i would call universally appealing, which is what you seemed to imply with your initial post about it. A great design is both aesthetic and functional at the same time, where this is at best one of those. I'll pass even at half the stated price.

Thanks for the feedback. Let us know when yours is listed on Ebay.I just listed my Griffin for sale in the Marketplace here. I picked up a Twelve South Compass stand today. The Griffin is nice, but I want something easier to carry in my laptop bag. I have a Waterfield Keyboard Travel Case and the Compass folded up sits perfectly out of the way in the bottom. I like the idea of the JaDu Skadoosh stand, but it's too expensive and looks like it's a bit too bulky still when folded.

I just listed my Griffin for sale in the Marketplace here.

It turned out... I got rid of Griffin A-Frame, which is sturdy, beautiful and sleek and saw JaDu Skadoosh for a lowered price of about $75 including shipping. Chose a black one. I know, it's still on the expensive side but only Skadoosh offers fully adjustable angle with sleek design of aluminum and portability. ;)

Hey,

I got this Love Stand last week (made in Holland). Look's really nice and elegant. I use it primarily for watching video on the couch :-)

It is made from polyurethane and is very stable. I got the white one, but it's available in different colors.

See for yourself: http://shapedad.etsy.com

ciao, Bart

ps. I see they have a discount now.

That's a lovely stand for a great price. Thanks for sharing yours. :)

I've tried several and my personal favorite is the Belkin Flipblade.

Sturdy, compact, travels well and very stable for both landscape and portrait mode.

I must not be the only person who thinks this because they were literally flying off the shelves at the Apple Store in the Grove (Los Angeles). The other stores closer to me had not yet received stock, unfortunately.

made a few of these for myself for at home & work. It's made out of pre-consumer scrap oak I get from my work & a small stainless steel rod. does the job nicely, I played around with the angles and rod length to where it is very stable and gives me the angles i like. What ya think? if there's any interest I can make some more and sell for $15, more info and pics here: http://jbaredesign.squarespace.com/design-sense/pad-prop.html

This may not be the coolest desk mount for the iPad but it doubles as a wall mount as well.

Because you don't have to remove your case and you can use the connector if needed, plus portability -- that's the ticket.

True. Skadoosh stand may be bit bulky to carry around with iPad and it might crack the screen if it is not carefully packed in a bag, but it is THE ultimate stand on the desktop for sure. After playing with it for a day, not surprisingly, I found the adjustability of stand to be the killer feature of Skadoosh. The design is minimalistic yet sophisticated. When traveling with iPad in a small bag, twelve south's compass stand is all I really need.

Skadoosh on desktop.
Compass on the go.

I recommend them both. Go buy them both! :D

Yet another Joule Stand.

The minimalist stand is now in beautiful nickel with satin color.

It's portable, adjustable and looks great on any surface. It is possibly the most-coveted accessory for iPad nudist.

It's cool enough to justify the price... Probably. ;)

Made of wood, got two places to park your iPad on, at 18 degrees (movies) and 45 degrees (typing). :)

Very cool, enterprising thought as well. not sure this will sit on your lap as pictured though, but certainly great for flat surfaces!

Another +1 for this stand. It's actually better than TwelveSouth Compass stand, which costs 3 times as much. It's more stable, and latches in fixed positions, so there is no chance of your iPad falling off of the stand.

Got it via eBay, delivered in about a week, $18 shipped. Very happy with it.

What are most people really looking for - portability or functionality on a desk? It seems to me that most of the pieces on the market address one or the other, but not both.

When I'm traveling with the iPad, it's in a case in my hand, on my lap, on a table, desk, in bed. I don't want to carry a stand with me - that's kind of why the iPad is so great - no need for anything other than the iPad (in a case for me), plus a power plug (which I take with me anyway because of my iPhone).

When I'm at the desk, I want the iPad sitting at an angle facing me in a sturdy place that doesn't rock when I touch the screen or tip over if I accidentally pull a cord or move something on the desk. Again, most of the pieces I've seen are not addressing one or more of these issues.

I'm as cheap as they get, but the idea of putting my $500+ computer on a $5 easel doesn't sit with me well.

I picked up a nice clear acrylic easel at a Michael's craft store in the photo
frame section for about $6. Not fold-able but is small and holds the iPad
completely stable in both orientations (even when it's in a case). Also doesn't
cover up the edges of the screen.

Does any here have a Twelvesouth Bookarc for Mac notebooks? Is it possible to slot an iPad into one of these? It would be cool if it could do double duty as an iPad and Macbook stand. It would make the rather outrageous price a little easier to swallow as well.

Thanks in advance.

I'm curious about the Belkin Flip Stand too. I have a Portenzo case on the way, and I'm wondering if it will work with this stand. I'm thinking that the case itself is probably too deep to fit in the stand, but I think it might still hold the iPad up if I can put the little bit of the notebook cover that overhangs past the bamboo of the Portenzo in the ridge on the Belkin stand that would normally hold the naked iPad. I hope that makes sense. Anyone have both and can report back?

Sibilance7
Jan 26, 2011, 02:13 AM
Just reporting back in case anyone else was wondering: I got a chance to check out the Belkin FlipBlade and it will accomodate an iPad in a Portenzo case. The ledge that the iPad sits on is actually quite wide, so it works well.

I got this great case for free during the media maworld reception. im gonna do a review soon probably as well. At first I thought it was cheap or fake leather though and that it was too bulky but afyer playing qith it for a while I am going to replace my apple case with this one. It allows for much more and better viewing angles and it doesnt fall down when you try to balance it on a table like the apple case and do heavy typing. Plus you can set it pretty well due to all of the velcrows with both landscape orientstion sides so if you play some games that only have one you dont have to hold it but can lesvy it on a table. It also has a car seat strap. The only problem is that its a bit bulky and heavy but that is a lot of added protection as Ithink if the ipad flls with it it would protect it a lot better.

I love my Black Anodized Joule Stand which I got as gift however, my iPad was accidentally sold few days after I got the stand (I did not think my nearly-year-old iPad would sell at such a high price. Certainly the demand is still high for iPad.) so I have to let the stand go.

Despite the luxo-price currently sold at retail I love the quality, functionality (three angled positions) and its sturdiness. I believe it is the best stand money can buy for a bare iPad.
