quick monitor question

I have an aluminum imac from 2007, and I also have an old 17 inch dell LCD monitor. I know I can hook it up to my iMac, but would the iMac monitor and the dell monitor be able to have 2 different resolutions?

No need to be same resolution. Only mirroring can cause issues if using monitors with different resolution but if you use them as individual monitors i.e. for expanding desktop, you're fine
