I have a new Mac mini with the optical drive and Mac OS X 10.6 client, and a 2TB hard drive plugged into it.
I also have 6 other intel macs running 10.6 client on my network.
I want to buy Mac OS X 10.6 server so I can use ical server and address book server and for easier file sharing between my computers.
But I don't need to host a website or anything.
If I bought Mac OS X 10.6 server, I will install it on the Mac mini. But will I also have to install it on the computers running Mac OS X 10.6 client for it to work?
Does the Mac mini always have to be on? What if it isn't?
Will the time machine backup on my other computers work over the network onto my Mac mini external hard drive?
sorry i dont know a lot about servers

I suggest you begin reading here:
https://www.apple.com/server/macosx/resources/documentation.html

You may also want to read up on what the difference between a server and a client is.
