Strange Problem with MacMail- please help!

hello dear helpful forum members!

I have a strange problem with my Mac Mail programme...

When I opened it yesterday and composed a message I found that, when I tried to send it, the bar at the top of the message (where there are normally the buttons for 'send' 'reply all' etc) was not there.

The bar is there when I reply to mail but not when I compose from fresh.

How do I fix this? All help gratefully received

There's a little gray button at the top right of the window. It's called the "pill", I think. Click on it in a new message window and the bar will be back.
