The start of a "what's in your bag" photo thread.

We've got laptops, phones, cameras, now iPads plus all the other daily work and non work essentials.

What's goes in your "Go Bag" and what kind of bag do you carry it in?

For me:
13" MBP
iPad
Canon SD790
1 file folder work papers
1 paper notebook
iPhone cable
WD 500gb hard drive

all fits well in a black Swiss Gear backpack.
(photo's to follow)

Which one of the crumplers is that (what size)? I am using an incase medium messenger right now and it looks huge on me. I can't go smaller because it won't fit my 15" MBP. :(

My Briggs & Riley backpack (http://www.briggs-riley.com/category/productDetail.aspx?id=15-point-4-inch-Executive-Clamshell-Backpack_KPC308) is literally my mobile office. Besides my laptop, I carry my notepad, headphones, power cord, wireless mouse, iPod, lunch pack, and a good book or magazine to read in it. It’s organizer section has pockets for smaller items like pens, business cards, and receipts, so I know where exactly to find them when needed.

In the past year I've lightened my load.

Now I carry a MacBook Air instead of the 13" MBA ... also I prefer to leave my iPad at home now unless I plan to use it as a GPS ... I need the full functionality of the Air with me more than the iPad ...

So in a year I've shaved off about 3 pounds from my day/work bag ... not bad.

Why do you need a macbook air, an ipad and a kindle with you at all times? Same statement for why you need a samsung galaxy s II and an iPhone as a back up.

Are you ready for judgement day or something.

I use the macbook air for work, the ipad streams music all day with my unlimited data plan, and the kindle I'll admit sometimes does stay home.
When I do take the kindle it's to read while doing cardio at the gym or during my lunch break.

I prefer reading on the e-ink screen vs the backlit screen on the ipad, just a personal preference, probably because I stare at backlit monitors all day at work.

The iphone and GS2, I use the iphone as an ipod since it has a better music player and has better audio output then the GS2, it also works better when connected to the cars audio system. The GS2 is used for everything else, but unfortunately it's battery life is not as good as the iphones, so that's why the iphone is the backup.

It's not like I bought all my stuff at the same time, I bought the iphone 4 right after it came out last year and have been using it as my main phone right up until I got the GS2 at the beginning of this month.

For right now it's easier for me to repurpose the iphone and use it like this vs selling it just to buy an ipod touch, also the viewing angles are better on the iphone vs the ipod touch.

And sometimes the galaxy s 2 does die while I'm away from an outlet to charge and I need to swap sims just have a phone.

Right now I prefer the GS2, but if the next iPhone has a bigger screen, and they fix some things that annoy me in iOS then it will probably become my next favorite phone.

This is a genuine serious question here so please don't take offence as none is meant but why do so many of you carry guns with you?
I understand if you're in the police (do all american police carry guns?) but I guess from a UK perspective it just seems really weird to imagine joe bloggs walking down the road with a gun in his jacket.

As i said no offence meant I'm just curious.

To protect myself and my family against bad guys.
Cops can't protect you most of the time, on an actual crime there will be no cops, its just you and the bad guy, so better be ready with what you carry.

as a side note to this because a cop is to big to fit inside my pant's pocket..we carry because the basic idea of 911 is not going to protect me or my family when it come's time to defend ourself ..

since i have lived in the UK when it had more simple rule's about gun ownership & people could defend themself from attack by another person and not get into trouble for it ..

to a person outside the US it must look like we are still in the old west style of liveing but we are not ..

a pistol or rifle is a tool and as a tool you need to have with you..when i go into the back country to work cow's on the family ranch in Utah ..i carry a revolver with ammo and knife on the belt with me to protect me againest four leg & two leg animal's that are in the area..

most of the time i worry more about the upright two legged animals than the four legged type because of them growing pot or makeing meth in some of the back areas we have land at and the remoteness of the land and how far away help is to you..

sometime's when working those area's of the ranch we carry along a extra person who job is to watch out for these type of people and watch our back's at the same time..

in the city where it legal i carry a 1911 pistol in what is know as a CCW fashion under my jacket or shirt depending on the weather that is out there

pistol and rifle's are the tool that allow's us to defend ourself's from people who are going to take something from us because of there nature to not to have to work hard for what they want in life ..

I've been traveling a lot more again lately and many times without a lot of prior notice. So I have started to make a list of the things I need to take with me in my travel bag. Just the bag, not the suitcase, no clothes, just gadgets, etc. After doing mine I was really interested what everyone else's looks like...

So I'll start:

Sunglasses
iPhone 4G
Passport + card holder + Frequent flyer cards
UE In-ear monitors
iPad
iPhone/iPad charger
Inflatable neck rest
Pen
Alcohol gel
Mints
Cash + credit cards

Depends on how long the trip is or where I am going:
MacBook Pro
Nikon D50
World adapters for my apple gear

It's really amazing how much stuff I am able to leave at home by having an iPhone. Sweetest thing ever.

Wallet (back pocket), Keys (in hand), iPhone 4 (left front pocket). If I'm going to class then add these items, basic Jansport back pack and I mean really basic, like the one with only a front pocket and a large main pocket, 11" Macbook air in neoprene sleeve (plus charger), a couple single subject notebooks, pens and pencils, lip balm, glasses, maybe a book, and that's about it. I like to travel light since I'm kind of a minimalist and I have to walk a lot! : )

Also, if I know I'm going to be out ALL day, I'll bring sunscreen, some eye drops, a snack, maybe a pocket knife to fight off crooks and bums. Who knows? lol jk

I'm not a very "normal" girl. If I am carrying a bag at all it's almost always a camera bag containing a DSLR with a 28-135mm lens, polarizing filter and lens hood. Within my trusty bag's compartments there will be my oyster (travel) card, a little cash and or a credit card and my mobile phone, if it won't fit in my pocket comfortably. There may be chapstick and ibuprofen but that's about it.

It's funny I got into an argument with an airline customer service person who was trying to tell me that a camera bag isn't considered a "personal item", such as a purse/handbag. (then started telling me what is normal to carry in a handbag, which was hugely patronizing and stereotypical.) I replied: "So because I'm toting a camera instead of a bunch of make up and tampons you're going to discriminate against my choice of what I carry and how? This IS my handbag and it's going to be considered my personal item since I am carrying no others." He dropped the issue at that point. Knobend.

Pockets:
2x iPhone 4's (one mine one work)
Wallet
ID Card
Site Access cards
Screw Driver
Side Cutters
Pen
Sharpie
Electrical tape
Car keys, panel keys
iPod earbuds sometimes, depends on the job

Thats what I carry into every job before I start, then I'll get the tools I need, depending on the job I'll grab just what I need and pocket them or grab my drill and tool box. What I carry on site usually is enough for most things.

Where I come from (eastern/central North Carolina, USA), just about every man that I know (and quite a few women) carries a pocket knife with them everywhere. One of the reasons I hate flying is because I feel under prepared without a pocket knife. They're just so damned useful.

In a lot of US states, knives under a certain size (3" generally) do not count as weapons.

I got my first pocketknife when I was 8, but I was also taught how to use it (and how not to use it), how to sharpen it, take care of it, etc. Basically, it was always ingrained in me that it's a tool, not a toy.

The very thought that a government would consider a pocketknife a "weapon" is both funny and sad to me. They're roughly as dangerous as a pencil, IMO.

Curious, to all those who live in places where knives aren't allowed - are you allowed a knife in your home? How do you cut a piece of steak, or better yet, how do you prepare meals at home? Where, and why, is the line drawn between having a knife at home and carrying one on your person?

A knife, no matter how small, can still kill - a quick stab to the carotid artery, in the eyes/ears, or even just into the stomach where it can rupture organs. Pencils don't quite have the same penetrating power, nor the ability to slash...

Banning them from being carried means that some people won't, reducing weapons on the streets. In the UK you can be 'done' for having a screwdriver or anything else that could be construed as dangerous, in your possession for no reason (ie: a kid loitering on a street corner at night, with a screwdriver in their pocket is probably not using it for DIY).

In regards to at home, of course you can have knives. I have a set of very expensive, incredibly sharp kitchen knives - but they don't leave my home, or go for trips in the car. So the line is drawn at the boundary of your house - take it outside and you're breaking the law (well, without reason - if you're going to be catering or something then it's fine, but a knife in isolation is a no). There is no reason to be carrying a knife in an urban setting 'just because' - we're not living off the land any more. You can probably have one in a toolkit with no problem however, such as a fishing tackle box.

http://www.bkcg.co.uk/guide/law.html
This is a pretty concise guide to UK law. 3.0" or less, folding, is allowed, but can still be construed as an offensive weapon in certain circumstances - so blithely carrying one all the time isn't a good idea. However if you're going camping, then it's fine. Other knife types are either banned, or can only be carried for your job/sport, and you can't take it everywhere.

While some do, most, but I am sure not all of the people in this thread claiming to do so are not telling the truth. First, Glock's marketshare would be abnormally represented here :) (it is high though, like 65%). The 48 states that do allow concealed hand guns (for non leo/civilians) 44 require a permit and most of them offer penalties if your concealed weapon an be seen by others.

I am not sure about other states, but unless they changed the wall recently anyone can walk down the street with visible guns in Texas, no permit required. It is somewhat odd since it is a violation to have your concealed weapon visible.

I don't have any statistics handy, but I do not believe licensed gun slingers commit very little crime. They also prevent very little crime. I recall a few notable accidental shootings. US gun statistics are about the most manipulated numbers in the world so it is hard to find actual data.

depends if you have the license to carry concealed you can and if it is registered you can carry as long as it is visible and not concealed ..check your local laws ....here in the states it is one of those rights to bear arms we so love and why not carry them bad guys do ...In the U.K what does the law state ? just curious.

What does the UK law state? No guns.

Okay, that's a slight lie. Shotguns/single shot rifles are permitted under certain (tightly controlled) circumstances, such as for farmers, sportsmen and hunters. Joe Bloggs off the street certainly cannot just go and buy a gun. Packing a pistol will get you in rather a lot of trouble, and certainly jail time - handguns are banned. Basically, guns on the streets are illegal, and the only guns you'll see will be at shooting ranges, or intrinsically tied to a profession/sport that requires one.

Oh, or you may see some of the armed police at airports.

(1) potentially the same bag, but lets not get too specific. (2) I pay attention to my surroundings and I pack a really mean punch and kick, which need no bags. A tripod would really hurt too and I often have one of those with me as well. I'm not the easiest target, as a failed mugger has already found out.

Out of interest, which Airline was it? BA didn't have a problem with me taking a camera bag and satchel.

Air New Zealand on a flight from the UK to the US. They are actually a good airline but I think there was a misunderstanding with the bag thing. It turned out to be no problem anyway.

Some people do, others don't. Here in Texas, there are places where you're not allowed to carry a firearm, and I believe that property owners can prohibit carrying as well. I can't imagine carrying a handgun to the beach, what with the sand and the salt water and all. Besides, most people at the beach are dressed for such, and not really equipped to carry a hidden weapon or wear their running shoes for a quick "smash and grab" type of robbery and getaway, so protecting yourself from such an attack isn't such a high priority.

I carry a pocketknife, but I don't own a gun. My knife goes with me pretty much everywhere except the airport, and it would go there with me if it were allowed.

There are a large number of people in the United States with permits to concealed-carry firearms.

I carry my gun with me 97% of the time. I work at a screenprinting shop and the owner doesn't mind, and most places that I hang out, it's permitted at well. I can't take it in the post office, schools and colleges, bars, casinos, etc, but aside from class and the post office, I have it in my pocket almost all the time.

It's just like carrying a knife or a cell phone, it's part of what I put in the pockets when I get dressed. It's just a tool that I carry with me daily. It's relatively unobtrusive, and I pray that I don't need it, but if I do, at least I know I have the ability to defend myself and my loved ones.

It's really not a fear thing, there are [rare] days where I leave it at home, and I mostly feel fine, but at least my having ensures that I'm prepared and can pose an equal threat to anyone who may threaten me, that's all.

While I understand this rationale, I still think it's crazy. Even carrying a knife around, if someone was carrying a knife here that it would definitely raise eyebrows and likely police suspicion.

If everyone is carrying a gun around doesn't it make any situation generally less safe? While there's always a chance someone could spring a gun on you, aren't you far more likely to get run over or get struck by lightning?

While I live in Australia and it could be different then certain parts of the US, but there are certainly some perceived 'unsafe' areas here too - and if you were caught with a gun or knife around these parts you'd be thrown into jail.

The 'right to bear arms' notion in the US is born out of the idea that one must protect himself - but if any person has the right to brandish a weapon doesn't this make for a generally less safe community? I know personally I feel far safer knowing it's illegal for anyone to carry a weapon than to think that any stranger I bump into could be packing heat, legally at that. Surely this would increase the probability of running into someone with bad intentions for using the weapon, being caught in between something, to even someone just having a bad day or even misusing their weapon.

Happybunny

I also wonder if there is not a racial component to this carrying of weapons.( I have a very strong idea that 90% of the weapon carriers are white). It would be very interesting to see the photos of these people.
From history Bernie Goetz in 1984 in NYC to Mark Stroman in 2001 in Texas, I could be forgiven for being skeptical about the rational of carrying weapons.

While I understand this rationale, I still think it's crazy. Even carrying a knife around, if someone was carrying a knife here that it would definitely raise eyebrows and likely police suspicion.

Living in fear of a pocketknife? I find that sad.

If everyone is carrying a gun around doesn't it make any situation generally less safe?

Don't get the wrong impression - most people do not carry guns.

...if any person has the right to brandish a weapon doesn't this make for a generally less safe community?

"Brandishing a weapon" is not the same as "carrying a concealed weapon." I'm not aware that anybody is allowed to carry a pistol in-hand, finger on the trigger, looking for a target. That would most certainly get you arrested, if not shot. It's menacing, and it's not safe.

Some of the knives I've seen in this thread are far more dangerous than simple pocketknives, and they don't look like they're intended to use for peeling oranges.

While most people don't carry guns, anyone is legally able to carry one. So basically if anyone can carry a gun, what difference does it make if not everyone is. As far as I'd be concerned, anyone on the train or any public area could be carrying a gun. Doesn't this just generate paranoia and therefore harbour the need to carry a gun? It's like a spiral - the fact that it's legal to carry and gun and you know that people do, makes you want to carry a gun 'just in case'.

I don't believe carrying a concealed gun is safe either. It's a weapon that could kill someone that is casually being carried around as if it's mobile phone or wallet. While I believe everyone in this thread that has posted a gun is safe and precautious, there will always be those people out there that are not so safe or may not be in a healthy state of mind. Why take the risk and make your neighbourhood unsafe by legally allowing these people to own and carry weapons.

As someone mentioned earlier in this thread, the US is not some jungle where you need to carry around knives to kill your food. Or a third world country that is war-ridden and the police have little control so it's necessary to protect yourself.

You could most certainly peel an orange with it, or you could stick it in your eye. Which would you rather do? Well, so would we. Most of us who carry one understand what it's for (and what it's not for), how to care for it, etc. and use them responsibly.

While most people don't carry guns, anyone is legally able to carry one.

No, you have to be licensed, and some people (minors, convicted felons, etc.) aren't able to become licensed.

I think you've hit the nail on the head here - you're paranoid, and we are not. No, it doesn't bother people to know that there are people out there in the world who are armed.

Jul 18, 2011, 09:25 AM
Unless you live in downtown Kabul, you're more likely to get stabbed or shot by your own weapon than someone else's. Arming yourself in most cases in the first world is akin to the security theatre you get from flying in the US, over the top and ineffective.

Didn't mean to start a war when I asked this way back on page 5 (I think)! and I certainly didn't want it to take over the original idea of this thread so apologies.:(

I suppose that different countries have different ideas of what's socially accepted and normal, but hey isn't that what diversity is all about? Lets get back to the original idea of this thread if we can and forget the gun thing?:)

No, you have to be licensed, and some people (minors, convicted felons, etc.) aren't able to become licensed.

THis is from one of the above posts and it just struck me that although a civic minded person has to have a license to carry a gun and convicted felons are not allowed to carry a gun, how will this stop them doing so, they are by your own admission convicted felons, what is stopping a criminal from being a criminal and carrying a gun which is unlicensed. In fact I am willing to bet that 90% of all criminal acts involving guns are with unlicensed firearms, in that sense the gun laws in your country are not worth the paper they are written on.

Plus the people who carry knives... Why?

Do you feel the need to have protection?

Is your city or town that unsafe?

If so do you feel that society as a whole has let you down by failing to curtail the actions of the criminals in your area?

Or do you feel big carrying a weapon yourself?

Carrying a knife in the UK, will get you a suspended sentence at the very least if you are stopped and searched and are found to be carrying it.

Not strictly true: you may carry a knife with a blade length of 3.0" or less so long as it is capable of folding, or a longer knife if you have "reasonable cause" (e.g. you need it for your job).

If I'm using my pocket-knife for protection, then something has gone horribly, horribly wrong. Knife fighting is nasty stuff and I'd rather be in a gun fight than a knife fight. In a gun fight, there's a pretty good chance I won't get shot. In a knife fight, you will get cut up and I don't like seeing my own blood that much. :-p

I carry a pocket-knife because it's a useful tool that I find I have need for several times a day, at least. It's also part of the culture in my part of the US. A good Southern boy (or girl, for that matter) always has a pocket knife and a clean handkerchief. You know, stuff you can use.

I live in the Pacific Northwest now. At my wedding someone needed to open something and said "does anyone have a knife?" and every man there pulled one out. It's American West culture.
