View Full Version : What apps for network technicians?
Jun 2, 2010, 11:31 PM
I have the iTap RDP app, and the free VNC app so far.
It would be nice to be able to ping, scan, telnet, etc...
Our network does not have open wifi everywhere so I guess the only way I can get in is via the internet/VPN. Then RDP to a server and use a terminal mode on that.
What kind of apps and techniques are you using for network support?

NetTools got a slight dual-mode refresh for iPad. Doesn't do anything new or anything fancy with the real estate, but at least it isn't pixel-doubled. ;) It does ping, traceroute, and DNS lookups.
I use iSSH. Not free, though. Also went dual-mode.
Glad to see some of the "tool" programs going dual-mode rather than having a separate "HD" app.
Of COURSE you use different passwords on each account on each system, right? ;) LastPass just released their LastPass Tab Browser. An OK way to securely store and access your passwords if you are multi-platform multi-browser. I use LastPass because it's the only thing that has multiple browser plugins for Windows, Linux, and MacOS and also iPhone and iPad apps. I say only "OK", because the UI is a bit awkward. At least you don't have to cut and paste. And I feel comfortable that the data is safe and encrypted before it leaves your device. And the data is not just "in the cloud" but also in an encrypted local file (at least for desktop/notebook OSs) so you can still access your passwords if LastPass or your network connection are down (or if LastPass goes out of business!)

"Scany" and "iNet" for network scans and discovery of devices on a subnet.
Logmein or iTeleport for remote screensharing/access, although for windows support one of the RDP clients would probably be better (I don't have experience with any since I use logmein as a client for all the stations I support)
Jailbroken (use the Terminal app, which give access to a shell of the iPad/iPhone OS, make sure to change the default password for the 'mobile' user account AND root account if installing this)
SpeedTest for testing DL/UL speeds, although limited in utility since you're only accessing through the wifi signal (but for wifi testing its reasonable)
