My Powermac (G5) has an optical in and out on it. I was wondering if a preamp like this (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/184120/) one, with an optical out, would function with my Powermac/Garageband?

I think it would work fine. You may need a special optical cable to get it to plug into your Powermac (I haven't seen the back of a PM), but that out should be full compatible.
