iMac shuts down randomly

My iMac will shut down randomly. After it shuts down I feel it to see how hot it is. It happens to be pretty hot but I never hear the fans going. This has only happened about 7 times in the past 3 months. My iMac is on a desk pushed up against a wall with a shelf connected to the desk. I'm fairly certain that it might have something to do with the fact that the air is circulating but I'd feel better if I got a second opinion on the situation.

This problem used to happen with the old macBooks because the heat sink glue was melting on the processor and giving out false readings, but I think they fixe the glue problem a while back. It could be a problem with the temperature readings and your system not turning the fans on at the appropriate times.

I just returned a refurbished iMac i5 for this same reason....random shutdowns....They claimed as DOA and overnighted me a new machine....the new one works like a charm....I would call AppleCare but your probably out of the replacement window and more into the they will try to repair it window. Its probably your power suppy or logic board.

I'm guessing it's the power supply. If you have AppleCare, they will replace it in maybe a week and a half to two weeks.

Well sadly I don't have applecare. If I ended up bring my iMac into Apple Store and it was the power supply/logic bored would they replace it for free? If not how much would it cost.
