Well folks, I've been looking, researching and not doing anything about a new desk for some time now. I finally picked the task up again and by PURE LUCK, I ran into an ex-co-worker who explained they had some cubicles to get rid of. That positive thinking my wife's been telling me about paid off!

So after a few truck trips and hours of putting the desk together, cutting another middle piece to use as a shelf and starting at the empty desk trying to plan where to put all of my gear, here it is

I bought supporting legs from IKEA to help with the weight.

Every cable is labelled at the start and end destinations. I've tried to tie as many cables together as I can. I'm going to wait a few months to ensure I don't move anything around then will buy some velcro straps.

Still to come:

- will move the white imac out and into the living room to be the 'family' computer

- need to set up my nikon coolscan

- a few more A/V pieces need to be set up beside the filing cabinet on the right hand side

- researching new speakers - so far looking at the Rokit line as I need flat sounding speakers for the accuracy of my client tape transfers

- waiting until Monday or later next week to see if Apple announces a new 27" monitor so I can see whether or not the 24" display refurbs drop in price (or buy NEC, Dell or Samsung screens - they have to be fantastic for colour accuracy). It's hard for me to get away from Apple b/c I've been a huge fan of the 20" display I paid big bucks for almost 6 years ago

Looks amazing, but I think it would be even nicer to have the towers on the floor and the ACDs where the towers are now. It would look a bit less crowded that way IMHO.

thanks for the feedback. i agree and I actually had them on the floor in the last set up (never posted), but the problem was 2 fold:

1. dust :( - harder to clean and reach behind the towers. Now it's at a great level which makes it easier to clean that pesky dust and also to change cables if need be.

2. access to burners - I burn plenty of DVDs so it's better to have them at a higher level which is easier to grab. I have my printer station set up on the opposite side of the towers (not visible), so it's an easy grab, turn and place on the printers. I do want to get an automated printer, but not ready to spend the money on one just yet :)

Cheers,
Keebler

I suppose I'd best ask the obvious question: Why two?

Probably because one is older, and he still uses it but he bought a new one because the older one is slowing down? Your saying if you had two, you would hide one even if you periodically used them both? :)

I suppose I'd best ask the obvious question: Why two?

The Powerbook is my old laptop. I still use it (though it's rather slow) and would not get any money for selling it. I keep it around for guest use, occasional personal use and to run torrent clients on. I also took it traveling before I received my iPad, since I didn't mind it getting beat up.

Still love those Dell Monitors - I have the 2004WFP 20" model. I'm hoping the one's from last year (black bezel) support MiniDP connection with 1080P support. Either that or I'll have to go with an HP announced 2mths ago.

Yes, I absolutely love these Dell Monitors. I was actually looking for a second one and could not find the same 24" monitor. I hope Dell did not discontinue it. Mine is the Dell 2408WFP, I was hoping to find a 2409WFP, but had no luck. None of their displays showed to be the same design as my current one either, a little disappointing.

I wish I could have such a clean setup.

Thanks! And to clarify it's a 15" Powerbook, the wide angle may have made it seem to be a 17".

I'm not so sure of that actually. I've sold two 1.25GHz PowerBook G4's: last year I sold one for $400, and this year I sold the other one for $380. What are the specs of yours? I'd be willing to bet you could get at least $250 for it (assuming there's nothing wrong with it).

And BTW, what's the point of having a newer MBP if you're not going to travel with it? You're putting that great battery to waste! ;)

I'd sell have to sell it for over 500 to consider selling it. It's nice having an extra laptop around for those special occasions. It's pretty banged up, so I doubt I'd get even 200. It's 1.33 GHz with 1.5 GB of ram I believe. I do travel with my newer MBP now if I need a laptop. I too thought it would be useful to have a PowerBook laying around for travel, but then I solved all my problems by buying a netbook (an iPad is much too crippled for my liking).

I'm guessing you have a first-gen unibody then (the ones without the built-in battery)? That's too bad it died so soon. The battery in my 2.16GHz MBP is also nearly dead, and I realized I could either buy another battery for $130 that would give three hours of battery (and being an Apple battery would likely die in a year), or I could spend $260 on a netbook that would give me six hours of battery and basically a free computer. Needless to say, the netbook won out :p

made some little improvements to my desk, so I'll post it again.
new apple remote for the universal dock. it's so beautiful and small!
new moshi mouse pad. it's very smooth, even if it's not completely flattened due to its retail package  (moshi sells it rolled)
serious cable management under the desk: you can't see it, but i've wrapped all the cables together. It's a lot nicer under the desk now! I've also found on ebay a USB cable extender (they're are bundled with mac pros) and i'm using it to connect the usb hub that i've glued under the desk. the cable that is connected to the iPhone comes from there
Anyway, full gadget list:
MacBook Air "mid 2009" (2.13GHz, 128GB SSD)
iPhone 3G (8GB)
Magic Mouse (with BetterTouchTool installed on the system, obviously )
Apple "Unibody" Remote
Moshi Shieldpad (White)

Some of these iMac setups make me wish I got the 27" iMac rather than the 15' MacBook Pro. :D

Best way to get over that is by shutting and unplugging your laptop, then taking it to the living room and continuing your work. OR experience a power outage, this will make you love that MBP even more

Most of the people that have an iMac have a laptop too, but either way you should have a UPS on any desktop. They are cheap and will save you during a power outage.

The early 2009 Mac mini and later with the 9400M can drive 2 DVI displays with the included MiniDVI-DVI adapter and a mini displayport-DVI adapter. The Cinema Displays both have ADC-DVI converters on them. They both still look fantastic, though they are starting to show their age. One of them hums a bit whenever it's below full brightness. It might be time to upgrade to a 24" ACD.

One of them I purchased new with my G5. The other one is about a year older than that. A friend of mine had purchased it and I was able to acquire it after he upgraded to dual 30" ACDs. They're both 20" displays and serve me pretty nicely!

One is definitely a newer panel than the other. I have one on full brightness and the other on half. They look about the same like that.

I really like the look of those, and just about everything else that came out of the G4 era. The computers just looked fun, especially the iMac and PowerMac G4 (quicksilver is my personal favorite), and of course the Cube. I am tempted to pick up a collection of the G4s and their accessories and such, just because they are cool, plus it would be nice to have a spare machine, especially when my stuff is at school. Alas, I don't have much money as a college student, so that likely won't happen anytime soon.

Are you aware that those displays use a proprietary Apple Display Connector (ADC)? To use those displays with a non-ADC Mac requires an adapter that could cost more than the ADC display (maybe as much as a new display). Unless you have an ADC Mac or the adapter already it probably makes more sense to buy a new display.

Jun 10, 2010, 04:07 PM
I wanna play! Let's go back in time!
http://web.mac.com/ryan42/setup/9.jpg
This was shortly after we moved into this house. I got the G4 at approximately the same time as we moved. This was sort of a bare minimum setup that I got running as quickly as possible. The Apple bag and PowerMac G4 sign covers up some unsightly drywall damage that only got fixed a few months ago. Funny how you can put stuff off and forget about it isn't it?

The G4 was an upgrade from my 5400/180, and I was long overdue. I wasn't able to move to OS X full time for quite a while because all my software was OS 9.

I was a very young geek at the time.

http://web.mac.com/ryan42/setup/8.jpg
The simplicity didn't last. The PC left has a triple monitor setup. It was probably running Windows 2000. The middle CRT is KVMed to the other PC, barely visible in the bottom left corner. I want to say it was running Debian. Our long running mascot penguin makes its first appearance here. Just got hooked up with DSL. Check out that modem! It only got replaced two weeks ago! Look at that Compaq! It has a ZIP drive! The chair blocks the view of the G4. Mine wasn't really much of a windtunnel compared to others I heard, but the fans would never stay at the same speed. It goes to the 24" Sony Trinitron which is busy being a fatass and bending my table. The 19" CRT had died. When I moved off of those crappy Walmart tables to the glass desk I decided out with the CRTs. I sold the G4 and the 24" monitor to a magazine company for $1,500 and got the 17" MacBook Pro. I often regretted the sale, because I would have much rather have been using the G4 after I got the 17". The 24" synced at 2304x1440. OS X acted kind of funny at that resolution but OS 9 was fine with it. OS X would only draw the screen saver on part of the monitor. The rest would just stay as it was. Weird huh?

The place I sold the G4 setup to still uses it daily, running CS4 on it. I keep waiting for them to replace it so I can buy it back :p -- I miss that rig. I can find a use for it.

The little guy next to the 24" is the PC next to the G4. FreeBSD box.

http://web.mac.com/ryan42/setup/7.jpg
The dark ages. I hated this setup terribly. I had no desktop. That's why I got the 17" MacBook Pro. I had also picked up a ThinkPad somewhere along the way for the Windows side. I thought I could go laptops only but I absolutely hated it. The PowerBook G4 was setup on the right with the external CRT. Look on the left of the glass desk. That's a Sprint Treo. I hated Sprint. (I got the first iPhone on launch day. That should date this picture pretty well.) I hated the top MIDI controller on the keyboard stand even. I hate so many things about this picture that looking at it makes me uncomfortable. :p

The two PC laptops on the right were not mine. They were being worked on.

This is the most recent shot from the past. December of 2008 probably. The penguin with the snowball was the extent of my decorating.
Yes that is a PowerBook G3 on the far left of the screen. Wallstreet. 266 MHz. It was still being used, at least every other day. I never really moved old projects to new computers, so when I upgraded I typically only did new projects on the new machines. I didn't bother moving older stuff to the new hardware to finish or maintain it, because it was just easier to keep the older computer around unless something came up or the work was really slow on the older one. When I quit doing work for a division of the chamber of commerce I finally retired the G3 out of its misery, and did it ever need it. Like most, the screen clutches were shot. I kept the SCSI adaptor plugged in the back just to hold the display up.

Much happier in this picture as I went back to using a desktop. I had to get a 30" display!! Anything else would fall short of my old 2304x1440 and it wouldn't really be an upgrade then! ;) I like how I was adjusting to the aluminum keyboard so I had it sitting on top of the Model M, which I would revert to at times out of frustration.

Here's my current setup, taken today:
http://web.mac.com/ryan42/setup/1.jpg
Yes. That is still the 12" PowerBook G4. I do still use it daily. Yes it's running Virtual PC, but just to get a few files off the VPC drive. :p Mascot penguin is still hanging out. The drywall got fixed!!

http://web.mac.com/ryan42/setup/2.jpg
The other side of the setup. The 17" MacBook Pro rarely gets used and needs to be sold. I only use it in limited circumstances on onsite jobs. Most of the time it's the PowerBook that goes with me. I need to get a 15" MacBook Pro with a matte display to replace them both.
The other computer is a FreeBSD UNIX workstation that I use quite often.

Yes, I do have enough laser printers.

Apple mousepads!

I kind of regret that as I was digging to find these that I didn't have more, as I'm sure I missed a lot of interesting variations in the 10 or so years that this spans. Hopefully nobody found this too long winded. ;) I had a lot of fun writing this post though. What a trip down memory lane!

^ wow, still running CRTs

Yes yes. I'll move on eventually. I have a 30" cinema display though. That should count for at least 2 LCDs. :p

My problem with LCDs is principally that I don't already own them, and I already own quite a few CRTs. Also, to get what I consider to be a good image from an LCD you have to work your way up into the more expensive panels. Even more so, I stay pretty busy. Changing out the 3 remaining CRTs for LCDs isn't such a high priority that I'm willing to invest my time into finding a good display, buying it, and physically switching them. It certainly isn't worth the money either. I don't see an LCD setup as having any net gain whatsoever.

Like I mentioned in the original post, I tried to move into a more minimalist age and get rid of the CRTs and desktops, and to downsize my workstation to what more people would accept as normal. I hated it. It just doesn't work for me. I need my megapixels of screen real estate and two or three computers in reach of me. It all depends on how you work, and I use the separate displays and computers to divide tasks and work and keep things separate. If I try to do too much in one space it all runs together. I get confused.

When I got the Mac Pro and cinema display I used only that display for about a week. Even with that resolution I found myself needing a separate monitor, and then another, so the CRTs come back in from the garage.

Who can afford to replace working monitors when there's camera lenses to buy! :D

I see some LCD's and in general it's a pretty great collection of hardware.

Thanks for your comment. I'm happier than ever with my current workstation and I think with the exception of replacing the G4 and 17" with a 15" matte i7, it will stay the same for quite some time.

In the mean-time, here's some more eye candy.
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1290/4689410702_618b1c13b9_b.jpg

After I got rid of the G4 I decided that all new desktops should be silent! :D
Here is the inside of the Mac Pro with a GeForce 8800 GT and Radeon HD 2600 XT, both passively cooled, as the GPU fans were the only thing I could hear from the machine. The Radeon's fan would cycle up and down when I played World of Warcraft just like my MDD's fan would all the time. What a nightmare trigger! :p The 8800 GT, as some may have seen from another post, is a recent addition. It's really a generic PC card that was flashed. It replaced my other HD 2600 XT. It came with a thermaltake cooler which on its own generated more noise than most normal PCs. That had to go!

YES, this and the "Whirrrr" on startup were my only complaints with that card. If it had not been for a steal of a deal on some GT 120s, (silent  ) it would still be plenty of card for me.

I think they have not been EOL because for the money they are about the best 2:1 setup you can buy. I paid 50 on sale in 2005. Regular 70 at the time I think. The bass is floor rumbling even with the bass volume all the way down.

they are fairly decent speakers no doubt, i have the X530's and paid about $70US for them ~2 years ago. im just thinking that if the technology has been in use since pre-2006, SURELY something better has come along since then!? or do they upgrade the innards and keep the same model.. thats my point lol.

Actually no.

Like the others said. This is an iPad before anything else. I can carry the iPad itself anywhere and use it whenever I feel like it to read or play games (on the bed, on the plane etc). But not only can I do that, I can pair it with a keyboard and a mouse when I feel like some word processing or to get some work done. So it doesn't defeat the purpose of the iPad...it actually just adds more options ;). For travel it is nice..when I want to read on the go, use the ipad, when I want to do some work, break out the keyboard. Not bad.

Nope. Already have one. But this baby is no where near as convenient to use in all situations. Find it odd and distracting to whip out a netbook during meetings. When I need to get away from the desk and do some reading on the couch to spend time with my boyfriend while he watches sports...I would take this before my netbook any day (and it's so low key it doesn't bother him). So the iPad is really nice, and adding the peripherals make it even nicer! As for computing..the experience is pretty nice! The iOS has it's limitations obviously, but people without iPads would be surprised at what this baby can do (i.e. pair a mouse and keyboard ;))

Anyways, I won't justify my set up any further. It is a sweet little set up and works pretty well, and I love it. ;)

You don't have to justify anything to anyone! This world is full of morons that just like to spew stupid sh** out of their mouths just to show that they have an opinion. It's a sad way of making themselves feel more relevant; eventhough, they really aren't.

It pisses me off, too, because when people come to such a conclusion, they do so by thinking "Oh, you're using a device with a peripheral that another device already has, so I'm now assuming that you always use the former device with that peripheral, therefore what you really need is the second device, despite any advantages the former device might have over the latter when the peripheral is not in use." It's like saying using a laptop while it's plugged in to a power outlet means you might as well have bought a desktop.

Not necessarily. A MacBook or MacBook Pro would suffice.
USB connections of both the Akai drum-pad/midi interface and the other on the far left would connect directly to the MBP/MB. Then the USB keyboard would connect into either for better control. you can use USB/FW400/800 connection to any external audio boards.

Again there is NO NEED to have a MacPro for Audio production anymore; unless you're using Logic Pro with need for a full band playing live with on the fly adjustments.

Need to pick up a shorter one and then sort out all my cables :P Also going for a Griffin Elevator as well I think.

That's nothing, my setup in 2007 had far more cables strewn everywhere. They're all hidden behind my desk with zip ties now, though. :)

This is my travel set up too...

A lot of reading and document editing.

That is a seriously sweet little setup! I love it! I thought about getting a 13" MacBook Pro for taking notes (surfing) in class but the iPad might just do the trick. I really was not crazy about it when I first saw it but it's really growing on me. How easy/comfortable is it to edit documents or surf with it with the keyboard and mouse attached compared to a real notebook? Also what are you using to prop up your iPad?

Thank you and congrats

I don't mean to be interrupting, but I also own an iPad. The keyboard is pretty big, like 97% of an actual keyboard (Apple's aluminum wireless one as reference) and comfortable to type on. Although, it takes a little getting used to. Some keys are missing, like the tab key. And some keys are different, like there's an "@" key when you're entering an email address. If you pair a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (the mouse only works if you jailbreak, which is super easy with Spirit) it's much easier. I prefer the iPad over a netbook because the screen is so much better, the IPS panel and all that technical stuff. As for propping it up, the Apple iPad case can prop it up at a 30 degree angle or so. Perfect for typing. It doubles as a portfolio/folder style of case, with a flap protecting the screen. You flip open that flap and stick it in this slit on the back for the stand feature.

BTW, he's got a case of some sort on the iPad and maybe a bookend as a stand? idk.

Sub is supposed to be on the floor (:

Apparently the M10 Sub isn't a Subwoofer, rather a low-frequency fill, so it is advised to not place it on the floor, according to most of the users.

Poor quality I know, meh lighting in the bedroom.

Bonus points to who can tell me whats playing in iTunes :)

My latest set up, still have my Griffin Elevator in its box, along with my Wireless Keyboard. I was holding out, hoping that that Magic Trackpad was real, but looks like I will have to settle for a Magic Mouse instead.

It's the Griffin Simplifi (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/simplifi). I've wanted one of these for a long time, too bad they're $70.

Now you can get one: $27

Correct. If anything, I've heard it should be placed at head level. It's a low range driver but without the super low frequency of a subwoofer.

My relatively new 30" ACD also hums whenever its below full brightness, so if you're specifically looking to get away from that, you may just want to save your money :-P

Back in September of 2009, right after the purchase of my first Mac Pro. I didn't have much money to throw around, so it was bare minimum (the cheapest 23" panels available) for a few months.

http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/3649/4363643891270e6f4e39b.jpg

Then I managed to get my hands on a used 30" panel at a good price, but I had to sell the 23" to afford it. I was constantly going through poster rearrangement, and that large world map is what I currently have in that spot.

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/315/56201565227f021a596a45e.jpg

I felt the need for a secondary monitor, so I re-bought one of the 23" panels on Craigslist. After a few weeks the dimension difference started to bother me, so I sold it and started saving for another upgrade.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5225/60653754.jpg

After a few months I had enough saved to start looking for another 30" panel, and came across a guy on craigslist with one at a good price. A good 4 months went by on this setup, and I started to crave even more space. :D

http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/4467/58587779.jpg

This one only lasted about two weeks; I again found the different sizes annoying. I had just sold the '09 Mac Pro (base quad) because I needed something more powerful to work with. This was taken about 8 months ago, right as the new (current) Mac Pro was shipping.

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/2307/0000298.jpg

I managed to sell the 23", and pick up two Dell 2407WFPs to take its place. This wasn't as bad in terms of dimensions, as I could set them vertically to compliment the 30" panels. Also in this picture is a 17" MacBook Pro I had for a few months for mobile work. After a about a month, I realized that the logical conclusion to this charade would be a third 30" panel, to simplify the workspace.

http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/7351/dsc00396fl.jpg

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9983/dsc00397qw.jpg

http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/3856/dsc00393io.jpg

This is my current workspace, taken today. It is a pleasure to use, with just the perfect amount of screen real estate visible without the need for body movement. The two GPUs running this setup are getting rather dated, but I don't want to overspend on new hardware when new cards could be out any day now. Also pictured is my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, which is sitting while I gather more equipment for a trip next month.

I'm sure my desk will continually change in coming months, but I'm not quite sure how. I didn't think I would have this kind of rig a year ago...funny how things change. :D

Yes, it's a Markus swivel chair from IKEA. IT's a very well built chair, and really comfy. We have some of these in the office, and a lot of Nominells (unlike Markus, they are not very good). I have a Markus at home as well. Unfortunatelly IKEA discontinued Markus a short while ago. :(

It's a great screen, I really like it. The only problem I had with it is the antiglare coating (IMHO its horrendous, but there are those who like it).

ps. Actually, I had to remove the AG coating (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=10046160&postcount=35) to fix this problem, so the display is now glossy, and the clarity and crispness of the screen is now perfect. :D

Great setup :)

From flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/techhie/) :

I can usually be found sitting in this chair 8-10 hours each day, so every measure has been taken to ensure the "in-flight" comforts required of any longterm workspace. This kind of screen real-estate is needed for extra heavy situations, however it is frequently used in both work- and play-related multitasking.

The "eight-core whore" chews through most anything I throw at her with relative ease. Of all the setups I've used throughout the years, this one tops the list with a winning combination of productivity and comfort.

But really, some photo editing, hardcore multitasking, gaming, and general misc. things. ;)

You have an eight-core Mac Pro and 3x 30" displays for... photo editing? I dunno, just seems a bit excessive to me, considering I can edit video with my 2007 MBP on my single 28" display (albeit non-professional editing).

And what exactly is "hardcore multitasking?" Is that when you open every app on your computer or something? When would you need to do something like that?

Sorry to sound so critical :o

Hardcore multitasking usually refers to using a large portion of CPU and/or RAM by multiple applications. This can be from video programs, photo editing programs (where effects on the images can take deems of minutes to apply, and the resulting image may be hundreds of MB in size), using virtual machines for running other software, and other everyday programs which all contribute to using extra CPU cycles. These would generally all be used at the same time, apply you picture settings in Photoshop and then go back to your video editing, or what have you. Of course there are other programs that can be run.
