Yup. NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT is not liked by Steam For Mac. Yet I can use Crossover and play games fine? I need to upgrade to something else, but I'm not sure what. I've seen the threads for the ATI 4890... but is it a good value?
I was hoping to find something for under $100 considering I've been fine with the 7300 GT since 2006, even for gaming.

See if you can find a Mac-compatible HD2600 XT or 8800 GT. Or you can flash a PC 4870 which should be ~$130 (or perhaps less). The 4890 is better, but there are fewer of those available.

If you end up going with the 8800GT, make sure it is the legacy edition designed for EFI32 (or flashed one for your model)

It seems like the 4890 is pretty easy to find, but it's like $230+ ...
I don't care too much, but I also don't want to end up with something that's inferior or problematic.
It seems like the 4890 is worth the extra money, but it's not recognized by OS X without a patch (both cards need to be flashed), so I guess the 4870 is the way to go?

I'd say so.

it's a shame you can't use the 5850 or the 5870 with osx, b\c they are faster and run cooler
