i think its safe to say there is absolutely not going to be a MP announcement at the WWDC...if they had something to say about the MP they would have done it before they started talking about the most obvious thing "the iphone".

no way is he first going to talk about the iphone and then the mac pro update...

forget about it guys...it looks as if its still going to take lots of time...the machine just is not ready and that's that...either that or they are waiting on newer Intel Cpu's and are just skipping 2010 update to come with a re-designed 2011 Mac Pro....2010 is almost over anyway

What we do know:

Apple updated within 2 months of new processors on the 2006, 2008 and 2009 models.

All the processors they use have been replaced in Intel's line.

Other companies have updated their product offerings already.

Only the 2006 Mac Pro was announced at a keynote.

Apple's behaviour in updating and talking about products is all over the place.

I really don't know. Is the WWDC crowd likely to be a big market for Mac Pros? Do developers need MPs to develop apps for iPhones and iPads? Or do they get along fine with MBPs, iMacs and heck, maybe even Minis or Airs?

Just curious. I figure the main users of MPs are video, graphics and music producers ... and then others who do serious number crunching in science, stats, finance, etc. And if that's the case, WWDC would seem to make little sense for any kind of MP announcement anyway. But maybe my figuring is wrong.

My guess is that we're desperately grasping at straws, anything to hang an announcement on other than just another Tuesday.

Another question, if I may. Lots of posters are saying if not WWDC (or at least sometime in June), then we're probably looking at September at best. Why not July or August? Or does something specific happen in September that would trigger a release then?

Let's not jump off any bridges. The year is not even half over. The iMac was updated as late as October last year. WWDC just started today.

It's still possible that Mac Pro will be updated very soon. There was just no room for any mention of Mac at that keynote.

Same boat - loyal Apple customer - studio G5's being made obsolete next week. Nothing to replace them with but technology that is over a year old, no idea if kit purchased now will be out of date in a week , a month or last another six months!. Kit should last 5 years - certainly don't want 1/5 of that built into a current purchase.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I think we all knew that Apple were not going to release the Mac Pro today, and secretly some of us knew that they wouldn't announce it either.

We are the fools, and we are the ones who need to change our thinking...
Apple have become successful and made billions of dollars by selling all things "i" and if it works for them why change it? The ratio of iphone/ipad/ipod consumers to that of Mac Pro is so wide that only an idiot of a business man would think about the latter first.

No more waiting or holding our breath. Get on with working out an alternate solution or buy the current spec and get totally shafted with no lubrication because of the price. Like I said in a previous post, Steve Jobs might be getting a pat on the back from all the average Joe's who are buying the "i" products, but the average professional that have been waiting on an update to their "High End" Mac Pro for a year thinks that Steve is a big outright dickhead.

Sorry Steve, it's the itruth.

I agree the Farmville thing is lame. But the main keynote at WWDC is becoming less and less for developers now that Apple no longer goes to MacWorld. It's now clearly directed at the public.

WWDC goes through the 11th. One would have to think that there's room for Mac hardware announcements still to come.

Well, I suppose I should start looking for guides to build a good hackintosh then. It's apparently the only way we can get a nice OS X machine that is not unbelievably overpriced.

The thing most people don't think about when they get irked and say they're going to build a Hackintosh is that (most of the time) you're limited to the drivers released by Apple...

I've been stalking the i7 27in imac but couldn't rationalize spending the money without getting esata or a recent/non-mobile graphics card. The MacPro was my other option but frankly the price/value is a joke...

So, I got tired of waiting for something to change and started my rig a few weeks ago. I've got the machine together and ready to go, except for the graphics card. I am crossing my fingers that Apple will release a BTO option for the MacPro or iMac that includes either the Nvidia 470 Fermi or the ATI 5870. You know when that happens Hackintosh drivers won't be far behind. Ohh and USB 3.0 support would be great. Here's to dreaming, right...

I've been a die hard Apple user since the late 80's. I hope that when this ifad cools off that Apple won't have forgotten about or totally lost their Pro and Prosumor base of users.

Before i get flamed for not buying Apple I should say that I'm writing this on my MBP 15in Uni and followed the Keynote on my MacBook Air this morning.

Just my 2 cents.

If you don't like it, don't get here; at this point, we REALLY need to express our frustration for the lack of updates on the MP lineup... i've been expecting this for months, even sold my 8-core Mac Pro and have the cash literally at hand, ready to buy the new one the minute they become available.

I'm trying to find evidence of this, but i believe after an all iphone keynote last year Apple made some quiet updates to their pro-line the next day. This is based off of memory - I haven't found a link to support my claim. Yet...
Regardless, i think it was just processor or graphics card bumps.

We can always hope, right?

Clutching at straws here but the front page has just announced Safari 5:

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/06/07/apple-announces-safari-5/

The point being that announcements which at other times may have been keynote worthy were not in the keynote.

Maybe there is hope after all. Apple just released Safari 5. This wasn't mentioned at the keynote. Come on Apple, keep the announcements coming!

Did the Safari 5 thing give anyone else silly hope and a desire to search WWDC events for anything relating to "trucks"?

Well it's certainly not in the spirit of its original intent.

Although the fact that Apple didn't announce the Mac Pro today is a MAJOR disappointment, I still think there's a possibility that it may be released tomorrow as most mac updates are effected on Tuesday. Apple won't make a big hullabaloo about it like they did when they released the first Mac Pro... it's such a small market that it's not worth launching massive ad campaigns according to them. Anyways only time will tell.

Apple plans to recruit 300 new employees
Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Global IT company Apple is planning to create 300 new employment opportunities in Cork during the next year, it has been reported.

According to the Irish Examiner, the company, which recruited about 500 new staff members in the last six months, has recently broken the 2,000 jobs mark for the first time at its premises in Hollyhill, Cork.

Those hired for the new roles are expected to work on the production of the firm's high-end desktop computer, the Mac Pro, which is targeted at professional users.

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THIS? Maybe they are taking their time to make a big update/refresh(usb3 lightpipe.....)...but then again, aside from some MINOR changes, the mac pro applestore page hasn't changed since the 08 launch, so I definitly agree the focus has changed, "10:26 AM: A few great pieces of info: 5 billion downloads now. 70% of revenue paid to developers: $1b so far." Lol so they made like 300 million dollars for letting people write them software, can you blame them-and thats just the app store!!!

The article also indicates not all of those personnel will be used in the MP and XServe lines though.

Some will be in the Sales Dept., and others may be used for distrubuting devices (i.e. pulling and packing orders for shipment), such as the iPad and iPhones ordered in Europe (as well as future yet unreleased products, such as the rumored iTablet, which is also mentioned in that article).

This is true, but my main point is to everyone saying that apple has abandoned computers and the mac pro is dead---> That is ridiculous, the 2010 mac pro will be released and it will be a big leap from the 2009 (http://macosrumors.com/2010/03/29/roadmap-2010-mac-pro/). Imo, it will kick some ass, and everyone needs to be patient... I just wish that they would give us a scrap of a morsel of information about when it will come out, but that is bad for 09 sales. Anyone want to comment about the roadmap link? agree with it/disagree?

It'll only "kick ass" if it is priced in a similar manner to the 06 and 08 models. At most they can offer a Radeon 5870 and dual 3.33GHz 6 core processors and maybe support for more memory, but those three things might not even happen.

By the way the site you linked to has no credibility, they just make stuff up for attention/views.

in my opinion its save to say there isn't going to be a new case/look...if they would have given it a complete redesign it would definitely been a "one more thing" at the WWDC conference. expect the usual look, with upgraded CPU and graphics card....that might be it, just maybe a 1TB harddrive but i'm not even betting my money on that

You will never see that pricing again (it's been written that Intel was giving Apple great pricing through 2008 as part of the switch from the PPC to Intel agreement). 2010 pricing structure should be similar to the 2009 pricing structure.

Exactly.

The Gulftown processors won't improve performance by much. So that leaves pricing, as you indicate in order to improve the cost/performance ratio. ;)

I don't see the article supporting your point all that well, though I do understand your thought process (workers hired to handle MP systems = Not Dead).

Imo, it will kick some ass, and everyone needs to be patient... I just wish that they would give us a scrap of a morsel of information about when it will come out, but that is bad for 09 sales. Anyone want to comment about the roadmap link? agree with it/disagree?
Keep in mind, the Gulftown parts are LGA1366, and use the same chipset as the Nehalem based systems on that socket. That means, they're meant to be a drop-in replacement in terms of hardware (microcode in the firmware will have to be modified so they'll work though, and be the main developmental difference between the '09 and '10 systems). It makes economic sense to leave the hardware the same otherwise (same boards, daughter boards = same RAM slot count,...).

Additional cores will help with multi-threaded applications (SMP on 6 cores per CPU rather than 4), and higher clock speeds with single threaded applications. But for the same core count and clock speed, they're identical (there are a few tweaks to the feature sets that could improve performance a tad, but without real world tests, I won't attempt to gauge how much).

You will never see that pricing again (it's been written that Intel was giving Apple great pricing through 2008 as part of the switch from the PPC to Intel agreement). 2010 pricing structure should be similar to the 2009 pricing structure.
Not true.

2008's E5462 cost more than the current W3520 or E5520, and in the case of a Quad, it's $500 cheaper, yet the system cost also went up $500 (and it even uses 1x fewer chips, as the North + Southbridge configuration was eliminated).

Did you send it with the latewire watermark!?! that will lead him back to me!! Great. He's probably going to send some goons over with iClubs.

Rest assured that what the new Mac Pro lacks in specs and affordability, it'll make up for in "magic."
