If you like cars, I have two that would suit you. I just have to find the original files to resize them correctly. They are mixed in with all my stuff from my old work computer.

Left is a GT2, right is a 2009 or 2010 911
http://i45.tinypic.com/30bfc51.jpg http://i49.tinypic.com/ann0ja.jpg

Note: The right one was originally in landscape orientation. I cropped it vertically and added a black bar on the bottom that blends in and grabbed some blue from the sky and made a bar at the top. It's not really noticeable because of the clock on the lockscreen. Maybe after I post the original, someone can photoshop the sky to continue so it can be used on the homescreen.

I don't want to sound like a troll but given how the panel fills up with icons, how useful is wallpaper anyways.

I like an uncluttered screen where I can see the images better.

Am I the only one who's underwhelmed by iOS4's wallpaper ability?

On iPhone, you have the image almost completely shown in the lock screen. For the home screen, I prefer as many things possible on the first page so I don′t have to go through different screens to get to what I want to do.

You can still see it regardless.

Well since you're not trolling you won't mind me saying something about your home screen compared to the new iPhone 4.

Android:
Android's design makes me cringe sometimes. Look how crowded the status bar is. The info is nice but it just looks messy.

iPhone:
I admit it would be nice to have more statuses in the status bar but I like how simple and unobtrusive the iPhone's is.

Android:
Does the home screen really need a giant battery icon app? How bout how "messages" is surrounded by that dark grey highlight? It's a good idea but the edges of the letters touch the edge of the highlight and makes it look unbalanced. Also the way there is a missing row of apps makes it even more unbalanced. And the apps have different shadow castings which make it look unorganized.

iPhone:
They all have the same basic shape and look very organized. The dock is always a plus because you can get to your phone app quicker.

Anyway you can definitely see and enjoy the wallpaper on the iPhone 4, especially with it's new high resolution. We get you're point that Android has had the ability to have wallpapers in the background for awhile but there's so much wrong design-wise that doesn't make it seem all that special.

Agreed, but the recent change with iOS allows them to be on all the time and I found them to interfere with the icons, given that the panels are usually pretty much filled up.

You can always dim the whole wallpaper so no matter how complex it is your icons will always pop.

Now THAT is an idea I'll definitely put to good use. I, myself, was rather skeptical of busy or colorful images that would clash with the apps and their respective designs, but dimming the background image is just the answer. Thanks for the brilliant input!

You can set up an iPhone with sparse icons on the main page..you can put just one icon on the first page if you'd like...
There's no requirement that the iPhone has to have 16 icons on each page...
The desktop wallpaper feature is awesome I think. I love having a wallpaper on my iPad.

I've been taking the Mac OS wallpapers and re-sizing them for the iPhone 4. I've made a zip file of them here:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1589713/iphone4_wallpapers.zip

I think they'll make wonderful "behind-the-apps" images. After all, that's what they were designed to do on the Mac!

Here's a sample of one:

And here's a custom one I made. Even if you prefer black, why not try my new "Glowing Black" background?

It's got slight grey glow in the center. I'm betting it will look wonderful on the new iPhone's screen.

Sorry, this post is a little off topic.

What software do people make these with?

I use GIMP (kind of like a free version of photoshop) but I didn't make the entire thing. I found the wood background online and made it lighter and to make the shelves GIMP has a wood paint brush so I used that and added a shadow effect. And on the one with the iPhone in the background, it's just the "Made for iPhone" logo made a little transparent with a shadow effect. So basically I just took different things and put them together and added effects.

But hey, aren't you happy to know that you can trust Dropbox with your files you don't want people to see? :D

Haha. I guess but i don't really need to worry about that. The only reason I use Dropbox is to easily transfer files from one computer to another or if I do something for school I can upload it to Dropbox just incase I forget it.

Nope. The way the Retina Display works is that 4 pixels are packed into the space that used to contain only one. So 320x480 images (if scaled up to fit the screen) will look identical on the iPhone 4 as they do on older iPhones.

Close, but I was thinking something like this...but minus the apple logo (since it'll go behind the apps)....
I can match up the circles, but I can't get it to be a seamless patch as far as the gradient of shading across it...

argh.

Thanks though...

Edit: It may look like a dirty white though next to the white face of the new phone... :(

If you honestly are not able to see the individual pixels, I made this, and am really curious to see how it looks on the Retina display. :)

Also - when I'm making wallpapers, I've been setting the PPI at 326. Is this necessary, or is it only necessary that the resolution is identical?

TurboSC
Jun 11, 2010, 03:19 PM
I'm curious as well about how regular 320x480 wallpapers look on the Retina Display...

I think it's still necessary to cater to those who want every single pixel they can absorb with their eyeballs, even if it's hard to notice the differences. heheh

Jun 11, 2010, 03:22 PM
Also - when I'm making wallpapers, I've been setting the PPI at 326. Is this necessary, or is it only necessary that the resolution is identical?

Irrelevant. Those settings only matter for printing. Just make it the right resolution and the PPI won't matter at all.

I'm curious as well about how regular 320x480 wallpapers look on the Retina Display...

They'll look exactly the same as they do on the 3GS display.

But yeah, like you said, people will want things that look even better. So making these large images is worth it. But if someone is happy with an image they're using now, they should keep using it. It'll look the same as they're used to it looking.

The only way I think you can do this is to have your iPhone provisioned as a dev device, create your own app, create an invisible icon for that app and load it up.

Its a lot of work for one fricken blank icon.

What's the best cropping tool that will allow you to specify a crop of a certain size, then scale it up or down as necessary proportionately? I've done these manually before, but it'd be nice to be able to lock in a size then scale as needed.

I actually just realized that interfaceLIFT (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/downloads/date/any/) has a download selection for iPhone 4 already. (Not sure if someone had already mentioned that yet or not.)

Super easy to get gorgeous wallpapers without any cropping or editing required!

I've used xat.com Image Optimizer for years now and quite like it. You can download the trial version, allegedly for 30 days, but if you exceed the trial period it continues to work. That's what I use to resize &/or crop everything.

Under the pictures there's a drop down menu next to the download button. It has all the option for resolutions. iPhone 4 should be there under "Apple Devices". They have them from pages 1 through about 6 or 7. The only thing is they're automatically cropped from the original picture, but they still look very good.

I've worked out a great way to do this in Gimp that is fairly straightforward. Let me see if I can explain:

1.) Open the wallpaper you'd like to crop. File-->Open
2.) Select the Rectangle Select tool. Top left of the Toolbox
3.) Draw a rectangle of any size on your image.
4.) With the select rectangle highlighted, specify the size of your select rectangle as 640 x 960. Toolbox-->Size
5.) Check the "Fixed: Aspect Ratio" check box in the Toolbox.
6.) You can now move adjust the size of the select box to best fit your image and maintain the aspect ratio of the iPhone. For optimal results, the size must stay above 640 x 960.
7.) Once you have your wallpaper framed correctly, click Image-->Crop to Selection
8.) Now click Image-->Scale Image. Input the width of 640 and tab to the next box. If you did steps 3 - 5 correctly, the Height will auto-populate as 960.
9.) Click Scale.

That's it! Then save your image, and you're all set.

No problem! :) Gimp is obviously a Photoshop clone, so the steps should be similar I'd imagine. Gimp is great to have around though if you can't get it in Photoshop.

And on a different note, I do love that blue squares wallapaper if I do say so myself. That's probably going to start out as my first wallpaper if it's not too busy with the icons.

Ok

Here they are, both full and half sized. If you have any other resolution than 1920x1200, it's better to set it to 'center' than 'fill screen' as it should be cropped rather than scaled up/down to fit.

If I could find a good shot of the insides of the iPhone 4 (or even a non-4 for now), I'd put that in place of the blue motherboard for more realism. Probably have to wait a good week or so after launch before shots start popping up on the web though.

I will do it same background on slide to unlock if youd like.

Yeah--when I get my phone I'm going to pick my background (w/out the frosted apple) for the apps, then screenshot my home page, then put the apple frost over that screenshot and use that as the slide to unlock wallpaper, so when you're unlocking the iPhone it's like you're just taking the glass off the front.

Interesting... does the phone itself add the darker gradient to the bottom half? That house one was solid white, and on your phone it's got a gray gradient. If that's the case, I may have to take that into account on some of my backgrounds now!

I did nothing but apply it in the wallpaper settings, guess it gave it the gradient.

Here's a 640x960 one that I made using that twitpic I posted. It's definitely not the best, I stretched the length and then copied and pasted the second half. But it looks good when it's shrunken to iPhone sizes. I tried just putting four of the images together, but that really didn't look right.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I posted some instructions a few pages back that make it pretty simple to get an exact 640 x 960 image every time using GIMP. Here they are again:

EDIT: I could do a quick screen recording using that new feature in Snow Leopard if anyone is interested in seeing the process done.

I was creating new docs in photoshop with the page size of 640x960 pixels, and just dragging on wallpapers and saving as the new size. Maybe since I saved them as high quality instead of maximum quality in photoshop, the size is off once it is saved as a jpg?

I would totally do that, except you still have to blur the background a certain way (since the transparent layer doesn't actually blur the image) so it kind of defeats the purpose of helping out the noobs. Sorry!

Interesting? Can you provide a few more details to what it does b4 I try it?
What size does the end product become?

It copies the images to your desktop then resizes them to iPhone 4 size (960x640). I'm not sure if it changes the original or the ones on the desktop, but it doesn't matter as it made a copy for you :)

I made an automator (who actually uses that programme? :D) workflow for resizing the piccies. If you have an iPhoto album stick this into it and away you go!

I just used it with this image. The original was 1920x1200. It's works great.
Again thanks for posting.

A few abstract swirl glass I just put together with photoshop. Working with layers now and 3D effects. Please tell me what you think or should I just stick with my day job?

Switch to Mac!
Lol, but sorry Automator is Mac only. You'll have to crop by hand :(

LOL...Knew that would be the reply, but had to ask.

Will never buy a Mac, will only use one if I win it or it is given to me:eek:
