I'm in.

Live downtown and not sure on FV or OR... figure OR is going to be far less crowded, but it will also have smaller allocation. So the line will move quicker but it will add about 40 mins commute.

Also how early must one be realistically? 4am? 5am? Never bought an iProduct on launch day before.

Last year I went to an AT&T store on 3Gs launch day to buy a screen protector for my 3G. I tried to skip the line and walk right in and a rep asked me to leave. I told them I wasnt even intersested in the new iPhone and they wouldnt even let me in the door.

For the iPad launch, Fashion Valley had two lines: reserved and walk ins - I got there just after they opened and there were probably 100 people ahead of me in the reserved line. Took me about an hour to get mine.

The excitement and initial demand for iPhone 4 is expected to be much greater than for iPad.

So, if you have a reservation and need to be somewhere else later in the morning, I'd come extra early - maybe 5am to secure a good place in the reserved line.

If you have no reservation, I'd see if the mall will allow you to start camping out at least 24 hours in advance.

Good luck everyone!

Apple always has phones specifically for first come-first serve. Thats why every store has a pre-order cap. Otherwise they could've taken much more reservations.

I've got mine reserved at north county. Doesn't seem like too many people on this forum have pre ordered there... Does anyone know how early the doors at north county open? Or anyone know where people will be camping out? I have mine pre ordered, but I have to be at del mar by 930 because I have to be at a performance at the fair. Do you all think ncf will have a pre order line or will it be like fashion? Thanks all!

So I got the 411 on this Thursday for Fashion Valley. This is from a Floor clerk and manager.

The mall theoretically will allow patrons to enter no sooner than 5am. (this includes the parking structures) last year people snuck in early and security was ok with it. Apple has ZERO control over this policy and wants to be sure that they can't gaurantee any lines formed before 7am by patrons will be official.

Apple will be forming 2 lines day of:
1) Walk-ups (these are defined as the risk takers who did NOT reserve in advance)
2) Reservations (these are patrons who reserved on the 15th and received an email confirming so)

They have assured me that every individual that has a reservation WILL get a phone even if they don't show up at 7am. The reservation stock has been confirmed and set aside, and a separate stock is being increased daily for walk-in guests. They cannot confirm how many there are just that it is significant. Changes have been made to the ordering system to avoid any day-of processing issues and average in-out time is no more than 10 minutes.

The lines will be processed at the same time with the staff divided in half for each line.

For reservation guests:
An ID will be required, the confirmation email is not specifically needed but it was presented that it would not hurt to have it.
One iPhone per reservation, if your friend tags along and doesn't have a reservation, he isn't going to get a phone, they will be enforcing this as the stock is very close to 1 to 1.

I can try to clarify any questions. I'll be there early, see you there.

Everyone, let's get together and mob the Fashion Valley windows store after we get our iPhone's! We can wear a whole bunch of Apple gear in and walk around holding our iPhones. We can use every product and loudly pronounce that it works terribly after we are done using it. Anyone can add on to this list! :D

My husband was on travel and missed out on ordering his new iPhone, and he'll be on travel this week on the 24th, too. He has a BIG birthday coming up next week, and really wanted the iPhone, so I was thinking of trying to go to Fashion Valley Thursday morning to get one.

But not being an iPhone person myself, I don't know how it works...will I need his old iPhone or an account number or something in order to buy a new iPhone for him? Any idea how long walk-ups might have to wait to even find out if there will be an iPhone available for us to buy?

Thanks for any help/advice you could give me. BTW, going to UTC is also an option for me - but FV is a little more convenient.

Well, it will be a new experience this year for everyone, Apple is expecting record numbers. I have mine reserved and leave nothing up to chance I will be there before Dawn being as sneaky as possible to get my phone. I have several friends who plan on braving the walk-ins line and are planning on 3am trips to Apple as well.

Several good things to do:
1) know your options, if you are replacing an AT&T phone find out how much it will cost and Eligibility. http://tinyurl.com/ATTEligibility

2) Make ABSOLUTELY certain you have authorization on the account to make administrative changes. Call AT&T if your not sure (numbers Below). A hint is if you tried the form above and the last 4 of the SSN is NOT yours, its likely that you cannot make these types of changes.

AT&T Customer Service
1-800-331-0500 or 611 from your wireless phone

3) Expect to Wait several hours ( I have been telling people you may not be out the door until 10 - 11am) if they have the same issues with approvals and registration as the year of the Great 3G Debacle..

4) Hope for the Best but Expect the Worst.... Dont get your hopes up on Walk-in availability. They could have 50 extra phones and you wasted your morning.

FV will be the busiest store so, for my sake go to UTC ( Joking ). FV is the San Diego Flagship store, you can expect they will have a higher chance of having more stock. When Apple ships last minute they usually use this store as a distribution point for San Diego.

Thanks for the info.

Yes you can! The easiest way to do everything you want would be to simply purchase one on eBay. They just send you the device. This will allow you to give your husband the phone to set up with AT&T himself like he'd want it to be done. Winning one on eBay can work great as long as you find one that ships it in time.

That's the best way to do it, for what you want. However, if you can buy it from Apple, that's always the safest.

I stopped at the Apple Store on my way home today - they said that as long as I have admin access to the AT&T account that I will be able to get a new iPhone for my husband (and he's due for the upgrade, so I'll get that price, too). So that should be ok - as long as I can get a phone!

The woman I talked to didn't know anything about mall security not allowing people to line up before 5:00 - she said that for the iPad people camped out all night, and apparently they were ok with that.

Is Otay Ranch by TJ? I don't think UTC is like that, at least it wasn't in years past.

You do realize, that since you have a reservation you don't have to camp out--you can even show up at 8pm on Thursday and your phone will be waiting for you?

There are two lines, one for reserves, one for walk-ins. They will be allocating at least 30-40% of units for walk-ins as in years past which is quite a large number so I'm still hopeful. Pretty confident I'll get one as long as I'm there by 3ish.

Yup third year doing this. I'm not willing to risk it though! Plus it's fun out here. The other thing you can't factor in is whether all of the phones the store ordered will actually be delivered. As long as they have 4.....I'll get my 2!

If there was only 7 people in line at 5 am in Fashion Valley, for IPAD it's not worth getting there much earlier... with all reserved phones on hand, and them opening at 7 AM, it's going to go fast even more are there by 6AM. Seriously if you get there at 4 to be number 5, it's not going to be worth the extra hour to be 3 or even 10 people closer to the front... See you all at 5 AM

once you're in the door (and who knows how long that will take), they will get your iphone, open the package, remove the phone, turn it on, connect to a mac and then go through the activation process.

The activation process is probably what takes the longest depending on if you're a new customer or upgrading. And this is where there have been delays in the past due to the number of simultaneous activations going on.

Lastly, every Apple store has free wi-fi and so does Fashion Valley shopping center, both of which you should be able to access while in line.

I'll be at Otay about 4 am tomorrow. From researching this forum for past launches, it seems that each store gets 500+ allocation, and it's rare that many people are lined up at opening even at the flagship stores? Like generally, you might have 30-50 people in line at 3 hours before open.

Understandably, this is going to be the biggest launch yet. Just the idea that there could possibly be say 300+ people lined up hours before launch, in a fairly out of the way store seems out there.

So more good FV info. The picture is of the Head of Mall Security and the Manager of operations at FV. I had a quick chat with them and caught some info on the details of tomorrow.

No one will be allowed in the mail until 5am, security will be posted at the store anyone who continues to enter the mall will be asked to leave for the duration of the event (they were very pushy about this specific topic). They will be allowing patrons to be within the Parking lots starting at 1am.

They are already setting up the lines, they have about 60 queue polls down from the apple store ready to be setup.

I know the details on how the lines will form and will post that after I get back to my house ;).

My friend called and got the same info on FV--no one allowed to line up before 5 am. But I imagine this would be pretty dangerous, since as soon as it turns 5, there will be a stampede toward the Apple store. I don't think it's going to be pretty. But then again, it might be the best chance the non-reserve crowd has of getting one. Luckily I'm a pretty fast runner(if I end up going to FV).

I was just at the UTC store, and there were about 6 people already camped out in line! Spoke with an employee and she wouldn't disclose how many they're going to allocate for walk-ins, but when I pressed her further she said that if you're there at store opening, you should be fine(while emphasizing the fact that there are no promises).

Hey all, I plan on heading to the Carlsbad store ~3am tomorrow morning (they open at 7). I was out of town when they started taking pre-orders and when I got back, they were out.

Do you think its even worth waiting in line for the walkins? Is 3am early enough?

When I talked to the guy at the store last Saturday they said they would have two lines (like most of you had mentioned) but couldn't tell me how many they would have for walkins.

I live pretty close to the store so if the line is super long its not a problem for me to turn around. I guess another question would be, do we have any estimates on how many walkins will be available? I was apart of the Epic 3G fail 2 years ago (waited in line for 9 hours.. sheesh) so I am trying to avoid that again this time.

Hey all, I plan on heading to the Carlsbad store ~3am tomorrow morning (they open at 7). I was out of town when they started taking pre-orders and when I got back, they were out.

Do you think its even worth waiting in line for the walkins? Is 3am early enough?

The Apple store people know how many they have allocated for walk-ins at this point since they've received their stock, but they refuse to disclose it. I'm not sure why this is the case, they could save us a lot of time and energy! Was your 9 hour wait for the 3G at the Carlsbad store too? I'm thinking they might get less stock than the main SD stores(FV + UTC), so that might be part of the reason.

Nope, I was living in Austin, TX at the time. I think it was the only apple store in the city.

I guess one thing we have going for us is that we are three hours behind, so hopefully server bugs will be fixed ahead of time. I can't imagine a lot of people in Carlsbad waking up at 3am to get the phone.. so I guess all I can do is hope.

Apple has provided Starbucks coffee muffins and juice for us at Carlsbad. Employees are taking IDs and info from reserve lines are verifying that info. Also apple employees did a headcount and I am actually #56 in the walk in line. Right now they are figuring out where they need to cut the line off at stock limitation and telling people beyond a certainty point it's a 50% chance. So if your not here by now you won't get one today without a reservation of course.

Little while ago they came around getting a count of how many iPhones each person is buying. i didnt notice any cut off point yet. they checked us in line...res line.

they didnt have anyone going thru the other line.

and ofcourse when i asked how many phones they had....secret.

Same thing at Otay Ranch, must be 5-600 in the non reserve line. Not handing out tickets or anything. Definitely going to be a sell out!

I had reserved mine at the Carlsbad Store. I was in line at 5:30. I was out with my new iPhone 4 at 8:30. Seamless experience. Apple also fed us which was nice.

This new phone is amazing. The display alone is worth the upgrade.

I went to UTC as a walk-up - got there a little after 4 a.m and was 130th in line. I think if you got there after 5:30 you were out of luck. SO glad they gave us the cards early - sounds like they didn't do that at FV? The Apple employees recommended that we just leave at that point and come back later. I waited for over an hour but the line didn't move much so that's what I did - will head back later this afternoon. The reserved line wasn't moving much faster than the walk-up line!

Do I understand correctly that at UTC they are handing out tickets to those in the reserved line and recommending coming back later? Even then are they still releasing them if you are not able to pick up today? Do you just have to be in line before they close or get there early enough to get in before they close?
Thanks

There's no tickets for people who have reserved phones - they already should have a confirmation email. Like those of us who were walk-ups, they are still required to show up prior to closing (9:00) tonight to pick up their phones. Someone asked what would happen if there were still people in line at closing, and the guy said "more overtime for me." So it sounds like their plan is to stay open as long as it takes to process everyone in line - which at the rate it was going this morning, could take them far into the night.

I got to UTC around midnight and it took me exactly 12 hours before I got my iPhone 4 (walk-in, no reservation). It was agonizingly slow at first (we didn't move for about an hour at some points) but got much better later. The ticket thing was a good idea, but there were people who took advantage of the situation by lying that they were going to buy 2 iPhones and then selling the tickets to people who were too late (a guy in front of me made $100 extremely easily, not that I don't blame him).

I heard from the various posters that line ups at FV were not going to be allowed until 5 am... also figured security would be tight on all rear and side entrances, so I arrived at 4am sharp, walked right in the main entrance with chair in hand, and was 4th in line, with in less than 5 minutes there was 100 people who had been rounded up by security in the back parking lot who were escorted in, and bam... it grew rapidly from there, by 5am there was easily 500 people in line, 6am over a 1000 easy, line wrapped around Bloomingdales for both reservations and non reservations, by 7 am all major news stations were there filming, heard both lines were well past Bloomingdales and lines were reaching 2000 people easy combined.

Thanks for the free Starbucks coffees and snacks! Was obviously easily able to get 2 IPhone 4's without issue... They are awesome, haven't had any issues as many have posted.

NCF iphone 4 buy was a success. they even had an att rep in store to handle upgrade swapping! although they missed my text messages swap and i had to take care of that part myself, it was very nice to have. as for the lines. they were outrageous by 7am! 100+ in the reserved line, and double that in the regular line. I was 30th in reserved line, and i got in by 8am. they were alternating between the regular and reserved line, for every walk in, there were 3 reserved ppl let in. there were 6 or 7 sales ppl. Well thats a wrap for me, good luck to everybody still in line, you will get a phone eventually, be it today, or next week. i'm officially signing out of this thread. lataZ!

In at 12:30 and out by 2:30p. It seemed pretty static during that time in terms of in/out being about equal so the line end was about the same. Definitely letting in 5-10 from reservation line and then 1 from the other line. They handed out tickets earlier to those folks and then sent the rest home letting them know they would be out. Overall, not bad at all. Staff was communicative and brought food. Process is done in about 10 minutes. Good luck everyone

unclaimed will probably be available starting tomorrow, since they give those with them all of today to pick up, you can't really start going into that stash till the day is over

of course if the reservation line is still full at the end of the day they'll probably have to pass out vouchers for them to pick up tomorrow or something, either that or stop servicing the walk in so they can process that line

Got in the walk-in line at UTC at around 10 pm last night(#57), got in the store by around 12pm the next day for a grand total of 14 hours. This store was letting in walk-ins at a ridiculously slow rate, I can understand 2 or 3 to 1, but they were letting 10 or 15 reserves for every 1 walk-in. I would've gone to Fashion Valley but was a little skeptical of the 5 am stampede.

Whatever I got the phone, but I think I will pass out for the next day or two.

Wow people still at FV???

I too heard about the "no line before 5am" rule... came around 4:30am and noticed a bunch of cars in the parking lot... all locked and empty! Everyone was already in line (what I get for listening to MacRUMORS! :P)

Anyways, the whole ten-hour experience was painless EXCEPT for when the "walk-in" line didn't seem to move at all for a few hours. Apple employees were AWESOME providing everyone with plenty of smartwater, snacks, and when the sun came out and heat was beating down on us... individual umbrellas for shade and ice cream! Quite a sight once all the umbrellas were open.

Got up to the store around 1:30pm, saw Quentin Jammer and his son leaving the store. Activation process was a breeze. Left at 2pm.

Ten hours for what I thought was a pretty decent starting point in the line at 4:30am... end of bloomies with a straight path to the apple store. Felt bad for the people who still had some zig-zags to go through.

Definitely PRE-ORDERING next time.

Also... to the people who immediately placed calls on their brand new 4s as they were leaving the store (back of the iPhone facing the crowd)... REALLY??? :P

Anyone know the current stock situation at FV? Have they restocked at all since launch (are they adding stock on a daily basis like years past, or does the current supply situation preclude that)?

If not anyone talk to employees at FV to get an idea of when they will restock? Guess as a walk-in I wasn't prepared to wait 10+ hours at launch, but perhaps I might spend 2-3 hours Sunday morning if there's a chance...

I don't think Apple will have phones available for walk-ins anytime soon. They'll likely have a reserve wait list like they did with the iPad post launch and they'll call you when your phone arrives. They told me my iPad would take two weeks when I put my name on reserve and I got a call saying it was in the store a day after. I'm going to try AT&T Tuesday morning, and if I can't get one then I'll just order online from Apple. Each AT&T store supposedly is going to have around 150 units for walk-ins.

Aaargh!! In my impatience, I went ahead and ordered on online through AT&T about a week ago. Well I called to cancel and they tell me my order has been 'prepared for shipment' but they haven't shipped it. All of this means that I can't cancel the online order and since it is based on my upgrade pricing, I won't be able to pick up my iPhone at the Apple store today.:(

I hate AT&T, even though this is really my own impatient fault. Actually, it's Apple's fault for the launch debacle.

Sorry - I'm just ranting to the only people in the world who might understand..!!
